Abstract

A two phase reactor includes a source of liquid reactant and a source of gas reactant. A chamber has an inlet coupled to the source of gas reactant and a flat jet nozzle coupled to the source of the liquid reactant.

Claims

1. A method of processing with a gas liquid contactor, comprising the steps of:

forming a plurality of liquid jets configured in a substantially planar sheet of liquid and arranged in substantially parallel planes, wherein at least a portion of at least one of the plurality of liquid jets has a length and width and the length is greater than the width;

providing gas with at least one reactive or soluble gas phase molecule; and

removing at least a portion of the gas phase molecules by a mass transfer interaction between the gas phase molecules and the liquid jets.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one of the plurality of jets has a thickness in a range from about 5 μ

m to about 100 μ

m.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the width is in a range from about 1 cm to about 5 cm.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the length is about 15 cm or more.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one of the plurality of jets has a width to thickness ratio of greater than about 10.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one of the plurality of liquid jets have a specific area from about 10 cm⁻

1 to about 20 cm<sup>−

1</sup>.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the gas is selected from the group consisting of ammonia, carbon dioxide, acid gases, hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide, and combinations of the same.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the gas is carbon dioxide.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of liquid jets comprise at least one of an alkali solution, an alkaline earth solution, and a hypochlorite solution.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of liquid jets comprise a molarity of above 7.5 moles/L.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the gas comprises a co-flow process stream.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the gas comprises a counter flow process stream.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the gas comprises a parallel flow process stream.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein at least two of the plurality of liquid jets are separated by a distance of about 1 mm.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of liquid jets have a high packing density.

16. A method of gas scrubbing with a gas liquid contactor, comprising the steps of:

forming a plurality of liquid jets, each of said liquid jets having a portion with a lenght, width and thickness, wherein the length is greater than the width;

providing gas with at least one reactive or soluble gas phase molecule; and

removing at least a portion of the gas phase molecules by a mass transfer interaction between the gas phase molecules and the liquid jets.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the gas is selected from the group consisting of ammonia, carbon dioxide, acid gases, hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide, and combinations of the same.

18. A method of scrubbing carbon dioxide with an apparatus, comprising the steps of:

forming a plurality of liquid jets arranged in substantially parallel planes, wherein the plurality of liquid jets have a specific surface area in a range from about 5 cm<sup>−

1</sup> to 20 cm<sup>−

1</sup>;

providing gas comprising carbon dioxide; and

removing at least a portion of the carbon dioxide with the plurality of liquid jets.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the gas comprises a counter flow process stream.

20. The method of claim 18, wherein the gas comprises a parallel flow process stream.
