1. An apparatus for seismic data acquisition that is used with a server having a database that includes Z-coordinates for a selected geographical area of interest, wherein each Z-coordinate is a value relative to a known vertical datum, the apparatus comprising:

  • a seismic device having a memory configured to store detected seismic data and a Z-coordinate; and

    a navigation tool having a memory module containing a set of Z-coordinates, associated with corresponding X and Y coordinates, the navigation tool being configured to;

    (i) communicate with the server to receive the set of Z-coordinates, (ii) select the Z-coordinate based on a GPS determined X and Y coordinate, and (iii) transmit the Z-coordinate to the seismic device.
