1. A method of cementing in a subterranean formation comprising:

  • calculating a total carbon footprint of a settable composition comprising hydraulic cement, wherein the calculating the total carbon footprint is based on carbon dioxide produced in production of the hydraulic cement;

    reducing the total carbon footprint of the settable composition by replacing at least a portion of the settable composition with an additive, wherein the additive comprises cement kiln dust;

    placing the settable composition in the subterranean formation, wherein the placing the settable composition in the subterranean formation comprises placing the settable composition in an annulus between the subterranean formation and a pipe string; and

    allowing the settable composition to set in the subterranean formation.
