a plurality of semiconductors formed on the first substrate; and
at least one cutout formed in a common electrode, wherein the at least one cutout is aligned with and overlaps at least one data line,wherein the at least one data line comprises a longitudinal portion and a pair of oblique portions connected to each other to form a chevron and the at least one cutout overlaps the oblique portions and one of the semiconductors overlaps the longitudinal portion.

4. A liquid crystal display, comprising:

a first substrate including a first pixel electrode and a second pixel electrode adjacent to each other with a first gap therebetween; and a second substrate including a common electrode formed thereon, wherein the common electrode includes at least one cutout formed in the common electrode, and the at least one cutout is aligned with and overlaps the first gap, wherein the second substrate is spaced apart from the first substrate by a second gap, and a voltage having an opposite polarity with respect to a voltage applied to the common electrode is applied to one of the first pixel electrode and the second pixel electrode to generate an electric field between the first pixel electrode and the second pixel electrode having a direction which coincides with a component of an electric field generated between the common electrode and the first and second pixel electrodes, wherein the first gap comprises a pair of oblique portions connected to each other to form a chevron and the at least one cutout overlaps the oblique portions.

5. A liquid crystal display, comprising:

a first substrate including a first electrode and a second electrode adjacent to each other with a first gap therebetween; a second substrate including a third electrode formed thereon, wherein the second substrate is spaced apart from the first substrate by a second gap; and a plurality of data lines for transmitting data voltages formed on the first substrate, wherein the first and second electrodes are symmetrically disposed about at least one data line of the plurality of data lines, and wherein the third electrode includes a first cutout and a second cutout formed in the third electrode, and the at first cutout is aligned with and overlaps the first gap, wherein the at least one data line comprises a longitudinal portion and a pair of oblique portions connected to each other to form a chevron and the second cutout overlaps the oblique portions.
