Abstract

A system and method for quick note messaging on a wireless device. A message prompt is issued indicating a caller may leave a quick note message during a ring back period. A recording alert is played in response to receiving a caller selection to record the quick note message. The quick note message is recorded. An indication is given to the wireless device indicating that the quick note message has been received.

Claims

1. A method for quick note messaging on a receiving wireless device, the method comprising:

intercepting, at a system, a call from a calling party to the receiving wireless device;

issuing, during a ring back period of the call prior to connecting the call, a messaging prompt to the calling party indicating an option to the calling party to record a quick note message, wherein the quick note message is a voice message for a user of the receiving wireless device;

receiving a calling party selection to record the quick note message for the user of the receiving wireless device;

playing a recording alert in response to receiving the calling party selection to record the quick note message;

recording the quick note message in response to the calling party selection;

monitoring for at least one of a termination of the call by the calling party or a time-out threshold;

indicating at the receiving wireless device that the quick note message has been received; and

in response to not receiving the calling party selection to record the quick note message, ringing the receiving wireless device normally and handling call processing normally.

2. The method according to claim 1, further comprising:

establishing a time period, wherein the recording is performed for the time period.

3. The method according to claim 2, wherein the time period is thirty seconds.

The method according to claim 1, wherein the messaging prompt is only issued for specified callers indicated by a set of user preferences, and wherein one or more identifiers associated with (i) the calling party, or (ii) one or more devices of the calling party are stored in the set of user preferences indicating whether the messaging prompt is issued to the calling party.

5. The method according to claim 1, wherein the messaging prompt and recording alert are integrated in a prompt to the calling party.

6. The method according to claim 1, wherein the messaging prompt and recording alert are silent, and wherein the recording is initiated in response to the calling party selecting to leave the quick note message.

7. The method according to claim 1, wherein the messaging prompt and indicator are any of an audio, video, verbal, or tactile prompt.

8. The method according to claim 1, wherein the caller selection is activation of a button.

9. The method according to claim 1, wherein the caller selection is selection of one or more keys on the wireless device.

10. The method according to claim 1, wherein the issuing occurs in response to intercepting an incoming call from the calling party.

11. The method according to claim 1, further comprising:

receiving user input that enables or disables a capability of the receiving wireless device to receive quick note messages.

12. The method according to claim 1, further comprising:

setting a do-not-disturb preference for preventing the indicator from being displayed on the receiving wireless device.

13. The method according to claim 1, further comprising:

rejecting quick note messages in response to exceeding a threshold for stored quick note messages.

14. A quick note messaging system comprising:

a processor operable to execute a set of instructions,

a memory for storing the set of instructions, wherein the set of instructions include;

a function trigger for intercepting an incoming call from a communication device destined for a receiving wireless device, the function trigger configured to play a quick note messaging prompt to a calling party associated with the communication device, the messaging prompt indicating an option to the calling party to record a quick note message for a user of the receiving wireless device; and

quick note message logic configured to receive a calling party selection from the calling party of the communication device indicating whether to record the quick note message for the user of the receiving wireless device in response to the quick note messaging prompt;

wherein the memory records the quick note message as received from the calling party in response to the calling party selection;

wherein the quick note message logic monitors for at least one of a termination of the call by the calling party or a time-out threshold;

wherein the quick note message logic activates a message waiting indicator for the receiving wireless device in response to recording the quick note message; and

wherein the quick note message logic is configured to ring the receiving wireless device normally in response to not receiving the calling party selection to record the quick note message and handles call processing normally.

15. The quick note messaging system of claim 14, wherein the messaging prompt is only issued for specified callers listed in a set of user preferences, and wherein the function trigger plays a recording prompt informing the calling party to leave the quick note message.

16. The quick note messaging system of claim 14, wherein the quick note messaging system is part of a voicemail system.

17. The quick note messaging system of claim 14, wherein the quick note messaging system is a software module within a wireless network device.

18. A messaging system comprising:

a receiving wireless device operable to receive an incoming call from a calling party; and

a quick note messaging server in communication with the calling party, the quick note messaging server configured to;

intercept the incoming call, issue, during a ring back period, a messaging prompt to the calling party indicating an option to the calling party to leave a quick note message, wherein the quick note message is a voice message for a user of the receiving wireless device, and receive a calling party selection to record the quick note message, wherein the quick note messaging server records the quick note message from the calling party in response to the calling party entering the calling party selection, wherein the quick note messaging server monitors for at least one of a termination of the call by the calling party or a time-out threshold, and sends a message indicator to the receiving wireless device in response to recording the quick note message, and wherein the quick note messaging server is configured to handle call processing normally and ring the receiving wireless device in response to not receiving the calling party selection to record the quick note message.

The messaging system of claim 18, wherein the messaging prompt is only issued for specified callers listed in a set of user preferences, wherein the receiving wireless device plays the messaging prompt to a user, and wherein the quick note messaging device plays a recording alert to the calling party indicating that the quick note messaging device is recording the quick note message.

20. The messaging system of claim 18, wherein quick note messages are given priority over voicemail messages by presenting the quick note messages to the user prominently on the receiving wireless device.

21. The messaging system of claim 18, wherein the quick note message is sent from the quick note messaging server for local storage on the receiving wireless device.

22. The messaging system of claim 18, wherein the quick note message is converted to a text format configured to be displayed on the receiving wireless device.

23. The messaging system of claim 18, wherein the calling party sends a pass code to initiate recording of the quick note message.
