1. A light emitting device comprising:

  • an excitation source operable to generate excitation light of a first wavelength range; and

at least one phosphor material configured to absorb at least a part of the excitation light and to emit light of a second wavelength range, wherein at least the light emitting surface of the excitation source is coated with an encapsulating material which is substantially transmissive to light of the first and second wavelength ranges, andwherein the encapsulating material incorporates a thermally conducting material distributed throughout its volume, and wherein the thermally conducting material is selected from the group consisting of a carbon, and graphite.
