- a memory having stored therein one or more applications and information related to a third-party recipient device designated by a user of the system; and
a processor configured to execute one or more the applications;
wherein the one or more applications comprise a voicemail forwarding application that, when executed by the processor, causes the processor toforward a message-retrieval instruction to the third-party recipient device for use by the third-party recipient device to retrieve a voicemail message, andidentify a conversion format by including retrieving the information related to the third-party recipient device from the memory.

An incoming communication can be handled by the voicemail system (18, 30) and provided with functionality based upon a user'"'"'s preferences, for example. The voicemail system (18, 30) can include functionality to allow a user to convert a voicemail message to a desired format and forward the file to one or more designated destinations.
