Abstract

A controller for controlling a plurality of devices configured for wireless communications in a facility includes a data communications interface communicating with at least one of the devices. The controller further includes a control module configured to provide a control signal to the data communications interface for communicating to a transceiver associated with the device and for turning off the device according to an algorithm wherein the control signal is provided based on a time of day and/or a sensed condition relating to use of the facility. The transceiver reports device data to the control module to quantify a reduction in power obtained by controlling the devices according to the algorithm.

Claims

1. A controller for controlling lighting in a facility provided by a plurality of lighting fixtures configured for wireless communications, the controller comprising:

a data communications interface communicating with at least one of the plurality of lighting fixtures;

a control module configured to provide a control signal to the data communications interface for communicating to the at least one of the plurality of lighting fixtures and for turning off the plurality of lighting fixtures according to an algorithm that generates the control signal based on at least one of a time of day and a sensed condition relating to use of the facility, wherein the control module is further configured to quantify a reduction in power obtained by controlling the plurality of lighting fixtures according to the algorithm in response to approaching or exceeding a percentage of grid capacity; and

a tool for verifying emission credits that receives the quantifications from the control module for conducting the verification.

2. The controller of claim 1, wherein the controller is a master controller for the plurality of lighting fixtures.

3. The controller of claim 1, further comprising:

a user interface for receiving programming inputs from a user and configured to provide the inputs to the control module.

4. The controller of claim 3, wherein the user interface allows the user to manually control the behavior of the lighting fixtures.

The controller of claim 4, wherein the user interface is configured to provide at least one user interface element for allowing the user to specify which of providing the control signal based on time of day and providing the control signal based on a sensed condition relating to use of the facility to use by the algorithm.

6. The controller of claim 5, wherein the user interface is configured to provide at least one user interface element for allowing the user to override the algorithm.

The controller of claim 6, wherein the user interface is configured to provide at least one user interface element for allowing the user to control at least a second group of lighting fixtures in addition to a first group of lighting fixtures formed by the plurality of lighting fixtures, and wherein the algorithm applied to the first group of lighting fixtures can also be applied to the second group of lighting fixtures.

8. The controller of claim 7, wherein the user interface element is at least one of a switch, a touch screen area, a button, and a hyperlink, and wherein the user may select a time duration for the override using the user interface.

9. The controller of claim 7, wherein the user interface is further configured to allow the user to adjust the algorithm applied to the first group of lighting fixtures relative to the algorithm applied to the second group of lighting fixtures.

The controller of claim 9, wherein the user interface is configured to allow the user to build the first and second groups of lighting fixtures by relating device identifiers associated with the lighting fixtures to a first group identifier for the first group and a second group identifier for the second group.

11. The controller of claim 10, wherein the user interface is a touch screen physically and electrically coupled to the control module and wherein the touch screen provides the at least one user interface element via a graphical user interface displayed on the touch screen.

The controller of claim 11, wherein the graphical user interface shows a representation a facility floor plan and wherein the graphical user interface is configured to allow the user to divide the floor plan into one or more zones and to associate at least one of the first group and the second group with the one or more zones.

13. The controller of claim 1, wherein the sensed condition is at least one of occupancy, motion, a lighting level, an ambient lighting level, heat, and carbon dioxide.

14. A system for controlling lighting in a facility, the system comprising:

a plurality of lighting fixtures configured for wireless communications;

a data communications interface communicating with at least one of the plurality of lighting fixtures, wherein the at least one of the plurality of lighting fixtures communicates with at least a second of the plurality of lighting fixtures via wireless communications;

a control module configured to provide a control signal to the data communications interface for communicating to the at least one of the plurality of lighting fixtures and for turning off the plurality of lighting fixtures according to an algorithm that generates the control signal based on at least one of a time of day and a sensed condition relating to use of the facility, wherein the control module is further configured to quantify a reduction in power obtained by controlling the plurality of lighting fixtures according to the algorithm in response to approaching or exceeding a percentage of grid capacity; and

a tool for verifying emission credits that receives the quantifications from the control module for conducting the verification.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein turning off the plurality of lighting fixtures comprises turning off the light emitting circuitry of the lighting device while continuing to power the communications circuitry of the lighting device.

The system of claim 14, wherein the at least one of the plurality of lighting fixtures includes a master transceiver wired to the data communications interface, the master transceiver configured for bi-directional wireless communication with transceivers coupled to other of the plurality of lighting fixtures.

17. The system of claim 14, wherein the at least one of the plurality of lighting fixtures includes a radio frequency transceiver for bi-directional wireless communication with the data communications interface.

18. The system of claim 14, further comprising:

an occupancy sensor for determining if a zone of the facility lit by the plurality of lighting fixtures is occupied, the occupancy sensor configured to provide a signal indicating occupancy to at least one of the data communications interface, the at least one of the plurality of lighting fixtures, and the control module.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein the occupancy sensor is physically coupled to the at least one of the plurality of lighting fixtures.

The system of claim 19, wherein the occupancy sensor is electrically coupled to a transmitter configured to provide the signal indicating occupancy to at least one of the data communications interface, the at least one of the plurality of lighting fixtures, and the control module via radio frequency communications.

21. The system of claim 14, further comprising:

a user interface for providing a first user instruction to the control module, the first user instruction configured to change the activity of the algorithm.

22. The system of claim 21, wherein the user interface communicates with the control module remotely via a radio frequency transceiver.

23. The system of claim 22, wherein the user interface comprises a touch screen, wherein the control module and the touch screen are configured to generate a graphical user interface for displaying indicia of the reduction in power, for providing the user with a series of questions for configuring the control module, and for allowing the user to manually control the plurality of lighting fixtures.

24. The system of claim 14, wherein at least one of the plurality of lighting fixtures includes a transceiver which has been retrofit to the lighting fixture by placement in series with the power input for the lighting fixture.

25. The system of claim 14, wherein the plurality of lighting fixtures includes a transceiver and logic circuit, the logic circuit configured to report a condition of the lighting fixture back to the control module via wireless communications, wherein the condition is at least one of:

(a) a state change from ‘

on’

to ‘

off’

or from ‘

off’

to ‘

on’

,

(b) a total of time in the ‘

on’

state or the ‘

off’

state,

(c) a log of lighting state changes including a time the state change occurred.

26. The system of claim 25, wherein the condition is reported to the control module upon receipt of a query signal sent from the control module via the data communications interface.

27. The system of claim 25, further comprising:

a diagnostics tool that utilizes a plurality of conditions reported by the lighting fixtures to determine maintenance actions to be completed.

The system of claim 14, wherein the data communications interface is also configured to communicate with another type of building component in addition to lighting fixtures, wherein the another type of building component includes at least one of a fan, an air handling unit, and a heating system;

and

wherein the control module selectively provides sensed condition based control and time of day based control to the building component via the data communications interface.
