Abstract

A system and method is disclosed for verifying a commercial transaction between a card-holder, a merchant, and a credit card company. The card-holder makes a purchase with the merchant using a full credit card number. The merchant submits a transaction approval request for approval with the credit card company. The credit card company executes conventional credit approval of the transaction approval request, as well as verifies the transaction approval request with the card-holder. An approval is sent to the merchant only after the transaction approval request is both conventionally approved by the credit card company and verified by the card-holder. The card-holder, or the credit card company, may initiate verification of the transaction approval request. The transaction approval request can also be automatically verified if one or many pre-verification criteria is/are satisfied by data contained in the transaction approval request. The pre-verification criteria can be initially determined and/or modified by the card-holder.

Claims

1. A computer system for verifying a commercial transaction between a user with account information and a merchant, said computer system comprising:

a processing unit for processing data and code; and

memory for storing said data and said code, said data and said code comprising

a merchant communications module operative to facilitate a connection with said merchant for receiving a transaction approval request, said transaction approval request including information to identify an account-holder associated with said account information,

a pre-verification condition associated with said account-holder, said pre-verification condition defining a pre-verified circumstance when account-holder verification of said transaction approval request is not needed if said transaction approval request satisfies said pre-verification condition,

an account-holder communications module operative to facilitate a separate connection with said account-holder for said account-holder

to verify said transaction approval request, and

to set said pre-verification condition, so that said account-holder can specify the circumstances when account-holder verification is not needed,

an authorization module responsive to said transaction approval request and operative to compare said transaction approval request with said pre-verification condition,

to verify said transaction approval request without obtaining verification from said account-holder if said pre-verification condition is satisfied,

to verify said transaction approval request with said account-holder via said account-holder communications module if said pre-verification condition is not satisfied, and

to issue an approval to said merchant only if said transaction approval request is verified; and

wherein

said authorization module includes an interactive verification module operative to wait for said account-holder to initiate said connection with said account-holder communication module, any prior notification to said account-holder regarding said transaction approval request being disabled.

2. A computer system according to claim 1, further comprising:

a plurality of pre-verification conditions; and

said authorization module is operative to verify said transaction approval request if at least one of said plurality of pre-verification conditions is satisfied.

3. A computer system according to claim 1, further comprising:

a plurality of pre-verification conditions; and

said authorization module is operative to verify said transaction approval request only if all of said plurality of pre-verification conditions are satisfied.

4. A computer system according to claim 1, wherein said account-holder communications module is operative to:

receive a connection request from said account-holder;

establish a connection with said account-holder;

authenticate said account-holder;

present said pre-verification condition to said account-holder; and

receive modification instructions for said pre-verification condition from said account holder.

5. A computer system according to claim 4, wherein, prior to receiving said modification instructions from said account-holder, said pre-verification condition is not satisfied.

6. A computer system according to claim 1, wherein said pre-verification condition includes at least one merchant identifier.

7. A computer system according to claim 6, wherein said authorization module, responsive to receipt of said transaction approval request, is operative to:

compare said merchant transmitting said transaction approval request with each of said merchant identifiers; and

verify said transaction approval request if said merchant sending said transaction approval request is identified by one of said merchant identifiers.

8. A computer system according to claim 1, wherein said pre-verification condition includes a pre-verified purchase price.

9. A computer system according to claim 8, wherein said authorization module, responsive to receipt of said transaction approval request is operative to:

compare a purchase price contained within said transaction approval request with said pre-verified purchase price; and

verify said transaction approval request if said purchase price contained within said transaction approval request is less than said pre-verified purchase price.

10. A computer system according to claim 1, wherein said pre-verification condition includes a begin date and an end date.

11. A computer system according to claim 10, wherein said authorization module, responsive to receipt of said transaction approval request, is operative to:

compare a purchase date contained within said transaction approval request with said begin date and said end date; and

verify said transaction approval request if said purchase date falls between said begin date and said end date.

12. In a computer system, a method for verifying a commercial transaction between a user with account information and a merchant, said method comprising:

storing a pre-verification condition for an account-holder associated with said account information, said pre-verification condition defining a pre-verified circumstance when account-holder verification of a transaction approval request is not needed if said transaction approval request satisfies said pre-verification condition

receiving said transaction approval request from said merchant, said transaction approval request including information to identify said account-holder;

comparing said transaction approval request to said pre-verification condition;

verifying said transaction approval request without obtaining account-holder verification if said pre-verification condition is met;

verifying said transaction approval request with said account-holder if said pre-verification condition is not met, said verification with said account-holder including disabling any notification to said account-holder and waiting for said account-holder to initiate communication with said computer system; and

issuing an approval to said merchant only if said transaction approval request is verified.

13. A method according to claim 12, wherein:

said step of storing said pre-verification condition includes storing a plurality of pre-verification conditions; and

said step of verifying said transaction approval request without obtaining account-holder verification includes verifying said transaction approval request if at least one of said plurality of pre-verification conditions is satisfied.

14. A method according to claim 12, wherein:

said step of storing said pre-verification condition includes storing a plurality of pre-verification conditions; and

said step of verifying said transaction approval request without obtaining account-holder verification includes verifying said transaction approval request only if all of said plurality of pre-verification conditions are satisfied.

15. A method according to claim 12, wherein said pre-verification condition is determined by said account-holder.

16. A method according to claim 12, further comprising:

establishing a connection with said account-holder;

authenticating said account-holder; and

allowing said account-holder to modify said pre-verification condition associated with said account-holder.

17. A method according to claim 16, wherein said pre-verification condition is not satisfied prior to modification by said account-holder.

18. A method according to claim 12, wherein said pre-verification condition includes at least one merchant identifier.

19. A method according to claim 18, wherein:

said pre-verification condition includes a plurality of merchant identifiers; and

said transaction approval request is verified without obtaining account-holder verification if said merchant is identified by one of said plurality of merchant identifiers.

20. A method according to claim 12, wherein said pre-verification condition includes a pre-verified purchase price.

21. A method according to claim 20, wherein said transaction approval request is verified without obtaining account-holder verification if a purchase price identified in said transaction approval request is less than said pre-verified purchase.

22. A method according to claim 12, wherein said pre-verification condition includes at least one pre-verification date.

23. A method according to claim 22, wherein:

said pre-verification condition includes at least one pair of pre-verification dates; and

said transaction approval request is verified without obtaining account-holder verification if a transaction date included in said transaction approval request falls between said pre-verification dates.

24. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having code embodied therein for causing an electronic device to:

store a pre-verification condition for an account-holder associated with account information, said pre-verification condition defining a pre-verified circumstance when account-holder verification of a transaction approval request associated with a commercial transaction between a user with said account information and a merchant is not needed if said transaction approval request satisfies said pre-verification condition;

receive said transaction approval request from said merchant, said transaction approval request including information to identify said account-holder;

compare said transaction approval request to said pre-verification condition;

verify said transaction approval request without obtaining account-holder verification if said pre-verification condition is met;

verify said transaction approval request with said account-holder if said pre-verification condition is not met, including disabling any notification to said account-holder and waiting for said account-holder to initiate communication with said computer system; and

issue an approval to said merchant only if said transaction approval request is verified.

25. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium according to claim 24, wherein said code is operative to cause said electronic device to:

store a plurality of pre-verification conditions; and

verify said transaction approval request without obtaining account-holder verification if at least one of said plurality of pre-verification conditions is satisfied.

26. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium according to claim 24, wherein said code is operative to cause said electronic device to:

store a plurality of pre-verification conditions; and

verify said transaction approval request without obtaining account-holder verification only if all of said plurality of pre-verification conditions are satisfied.

27. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium according to claim 24, wherein said pre-verification condition is determined by said account-holder.

28. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium according to claim 24, wherein said code is further operative to cause said electronic device to:

establish a connection with said account-holder;

authenticate said account-holder; and

allow said account-holder to modify said pre-verification condition associated with said account-holder.

29. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium according to claim 28, wherein said pre-verification condition is not satisfied prior to modification by said account-holder.

30. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium according to claim 24, wherein said pre-verification condition includes at least one merchant identifier.

31. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium according to claim 30, wherein:

said pre-verification condition includes a plurality of merchant identifiers; and

said code is operative to cause said electronic device to verify said transaction approval request without obtaining account-holder verification if said merchant is identified by one of said plurality of merchant identifiers.

32. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium according to claim 24, wherein said pre-verification condition includes a pre-verified purchase price.

33. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium according to claim 32, wherein said code is operative to cause said electronic device to verify said transaction approval request without obtaining account-holder verification if a purchase price identified in said transaction approval request is less than said pre-verified purchase.

34. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium according to claim 24, wherein said pre-verification condition includes at least one pre-verification date.

35. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium according to claim 34, wherein:

said pre-verification condition includes at least one pair of pre-verification dates; and

said code is operative to cause said electronic device to verify said transaction approval request without obtaining account-holder verification if a transaction date included in said transaction approval request falls between said pre-verification dates.

36. In a computer system, a method for verifying commercial transactions between a user with account information and a merchant, said method comprising:

storing a pre-verification condition for an account-holder associated with said account information, said pre-verification condition defining a pre-verified circumstance when account-holder verification of a transaction approval request is not needed if said transaction approval request satisfies said pre-verification condition;

receiving instructions from said account-holder to selectively enable a previously-disabled verification function;

receiving said transaction approval request from said merchant, said transaction approval request including information to identify said account-holder;

comparing said transaction approval request to said pre-verification condition;

verifying said transaction approval request without obtaining account-holder verification if said pre-verification condition is met;

verifying said transaction approval request with said account-holder if said pre- verification condition is not met;

issuing an approval to said merchant only if said transaction approval request is verified or if said verification function has been selectively disabled;

receiving instructions from said account-holder to selectively disable said previously-enabled verification function;

receiving a subsequent transaction approval request from another merchant; and

issuing an approval to said another merchant without verifying said subsequent transaction approval request responsive to said selectively-disabled verification function.

37. A method according to claim 36, wherein:

said step of storing said pre-verification condition includes storing a plurality of pre-verification conditions; and

said step of verifying said transaction approval request without obtaining account-holder verification includes verifying said transaction approval request if at least one of said plurality of pre-verification conditions is satisfied.

38. A method according to claim 36, wherein:

said step of storing said pre-verification condition includes storing a plurality of pre-verification conditions; and

said step of verifying said transaction approval request without obtaining account-holder verification includes verifying said transaction approval request only if all of said plurality of pre-verification conditions are satisfied.

39. A method according to claim 36, wherein said pre-verification condition is determined by said account-holder.

40. A method according to claim 36, further comprising:

establishing a connection with said account-holder;

authenticating said account-holder; and

allowing said account-holder to modify said pre-verification condition associated with said account-holder.

41. A method according to claim 40, wherein said pre-verification condition is not satisfied prior to modification by said account-holder.

42. A method according to claim 36, wherein said pre-verification condition includes at least one merchant identifier.

43. A method according to claim 42, wherein:

said pre-verification condition includes a plurality of merchant identifiers; and

said transaction approval request is verified without obtaining account-holder verification if said merchant is identified by one of said plurality of merchant identifiers.

44. A method according to claim 36, wherein said pre-verification condition includes a pre-verified purchase price.

45. A method according to claim 44, wherein said transaction approval request is verified without obtaining account-holder verification if a purchase price identified in said transaction approval request is less than said pre-verified purchase.

46. A method according to claim 36, wherein said pre-verification condition includes at least one pre-verification date.

47. A method according to claim 46, wherein:

said pre-verification condition includes at least one pair of pre-verification dates; and

said transaction approval request is verified without obtaining account-holder verification if a transaction date included in said transaction approval request falls between said pre-verification dates.
