Abstract

An infusion pump includes: a housing, a pump actuator supported by the housing, electronics configured to control the pump actuator, a pain controlled analgesic (“PCA”) input device, a cord having a remote end connected to the PCA input device and a local end connected to the housing, a remote integrated circuit; and a local integrated circuit in communication with the electronics and the remote integrated circuit so as to provide operational information concerning the PCA input device to the electronics.

Claims

1. An infusion pump comprising:

a housing;

a pump actuator supported by the housing;

electronics configured to control the pump actuator;

a pain controlled analgesic (“

PCA”

) input device;

a cord having a remote end connected to the PCA input device and a local end connected to the housing;

a remote integrated circuit; and

a local integrated circuit in communication with the electronics and the remote integrated circuit so as to provide operational information concerning the PCA input device to the electronics, wherein at least one of the local integrated circuit and the remote integrated circuit is located within the cord.

2. The infusion pump of claim 1, wherein the electronics configured to control the pump actuator include programmable processing and memory.

3. The infusion pump of claim 1, wherein the PCA input device includes at least one button.

4. The infusion pump of claim 1, wherein the remote integrated circuit is located within the cord at the remote end.

5. The infusion pump of claim 1, wherein the local integrated circuit is located within the cord at the local end.

6. The infusion pump of claim 1, wherein the remote integrated circuit is in communication with the local integrated circuit via a protocol selected from the group consisting of:

Inter-Integrated Circuit (“

I.sup.2C”

), Serial Peripheral Interface Bus (“

SPI”

), Transistor-Transistor Logic Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter (“

TTL UART”

);

RS 232 Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter (“

RS232 UART”

), and fiber optics.

7. The infusion pump of claim 1, wherein the operational information concerning the PCA input device includes a request from the remote integrated circuit for a bolus of analgesic.

8. The infusion pump of claim 7, wherein the remote integrated circuit is configured to send the bolus request upon receiving an input from the PCA input device by a user of the device.

9. The infusion pump of claim 7, wherein one of the (i) local integrated circuit and (ii) the electronics is configured to apply at least one rule to determine if the bolus of analgesic should be delivered.

10. The infusion pump of claim 9, wherein the at least one rule includes whether the bolus request has occurred too soon after a previous bolus of analgesic delivery.

11. The infusion pump of claim 1, wherein the operational information concerning the PCA input device includes whether the remote and local integrated circuits can communicate.

12. The infusion pump of claim 1, wherein the operational information concerning the PCA input device includes whether the PCA input device is functioning properly.

13. An infusion pump comprising:

a housing;

a pump actuator supported by the housing;

electronics configured to control the pump actuator;

a pain controlled analgesic (“

PCA”

) input device;

a first integrated circuit; and

a second integrated circuit in communication with the first integrated circuit, at least one of the first and second integrated circuits in communication with the electronics, the first and second integrated circuits configured and arranged with respect to the PCA input device and the housing to detect whether the PCA input device is functioning properly.

14. The infusion pump of claim 13, the first integrated circuit associated with the PCA input device, and wherein being configured to detect whether the PCA input device is functioning properly includes being configured to determine if the first integrated circuit can communicate with (i) the electronics or (ii) the second integrated circuit.

15. The infusion pump of claim 13, wherein being configured to detect whether the PCA input device is functioning properly includes being configured to determine if a button of the PCA input device is stuck.

16. The infusion pump of claim 13, wherein being configured to detect whether the PCA input device is functioning properly includes being configured to determine if a switch contact of the PCA input device is functioning properly.

17. The infusion pump of claim 13, which includes a cord connecting the PCA input device to the housing.

18. The infusion pump of claim 17, wherein at least one of:

(i) the first integrated circuit is located in the PCA input device or at a PCA input device end of the cord and (ii) the second integrated circuit is located in the housing or at a housing end of the cord.

19. An infusion pump comprising:

a housing;

a pump actuator supported by the housing;

electronics configured to control the pump actuator;

a pain controlled analgesic (“

PCA”

) input device;

a cord connecting the PCA input device and the housing; and

first and second integrated circuits positioned with respect to the cord and configured to determine at least one of;

(i) integrity of wiring within the cord; and

(ii) integrity of the PCA input device.

20. The infusion pump of claim 19, wherein at least one of the first and second integrated circuits is located within the cord.
