Abstract

Through the use of a least squares minimization concept, the loop length, the number of bridged taps and length of the bridged taps on a transmission line can be determined from readily available modem data. In particular, the loop length, the number of bridge taps and the length of bridged taps can be estimated by comparing a measured frequency domain channel impulse response of the transmission line to a model of a loop that is comprised of multiple sections and multiple bridge taps.

Claims

1. A loop length system to estimate a loop length of a link comprising:

means for estimating a channel transfer function using one or more signals from an initialization, the initialization occurring between a first multicarrier transceiver connectable to a first end of the link and a second multicarrier transceiver connectable to a second end of the link, the one or more signals from the initialization having been transmitted or received using a multiplicity of discrete frequency carriers;

means for determining a theoretical channel transfer function of the link;

means for comparing the theoretical channel transfer function and the estimated channel transfer function; and

means for determining the estimated loop length of the link based upon a result of the comparison, wherein the theoretical channel transfer function has as an input at least one parameter related to a wire gauge of the link.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the estimating of the channel transfer function uses a REVERB signal.

3. The system of claim 1, further comprising means for estimating a bridged tap length.

4. The system of claim 1, further comprising means for outputting the estimated loop length.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the estimated channel transfer function includes multiple sections with varying wire gauges.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the theoretical channel transfer includes multiple sections with varying wire gauges.

7. The system of claim 1, further comprising at least one of a single program general purpose computer, a programmed general purpose computer, a special purpose computer, a programmed microprocessor, a microcontroller and peripheral integrated circuit element, an ASIC, an integrated circuit, a digital signal processor, a hard wired electronic or logic circuit, a discrete element circuit, a programmable logic device, a PLD, a PLA, an FPGA, a PAL, and a modem.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the one or more signals utilize frequency carriers of a DSL system.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the multiplicity of discrete frequency carriers are tones that are multiples of 4312.5 Hz.

10. A method to estimate a loop length of a link comprising:

estimating a channel transfer function using one or more signals from an initialization, the initialization occurring between a first multicarrier transceiver connectable to a first end of the link and a second multicarrier transceiver connectable to a second end of the link, the one or more signals from the initialization having been transmitted or received using a multiplicity of discrete frequency carriers;

determining a theoretical channel transfer function of the link;

comparing the theoretical channel transfer function and the estimated channel transfer function; and

determining the estimated loop length of the link based upon a result of the comparison, wherein the theoretical channel transfer function has as an input at least one parameter related to a wire gauge of the link.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the estimating of the channel transfer function uses a REVERB signal.

12. The method of claim 10, further comprising estimating a bridged tap length.

13. The method of claim 10, further comprising outputting the estimated loop length.

14. The method of claim 10, wherein the estimated channel transfer function includes multiple sections with varying wire gauges.

15. The method of claim 10, wherein the theoretical channel transfer includes multiple sections with varying wire gauges.

16. The method of claim 10, wherein one or more steps of the method are performed using at least one of a single program general purpose computer, a programmed general purpose computer, a special purpose computer, a programmed microprocessor, a microcontroller and peripheral integrated circuit element, an ASIC, an integrated circuit, a digital signal processor, a hard wired electronic or logic circuit, a discrete element circuit, a programmable logic device, a PLD, a PLA, an FPGA, a PAL, and a modem.

17. The method of claim 10, wherein the one or more signals utilize frequency carriers of a DSL system.

18. The method of claim 10, wherein the multiplicity of discrete frequency carriers are tones that are multiples of 4312.5 Hz.

19. A non-transitory computer readable information storage media having stored thereon instructions, that if executed by a processor, cause to be performed the steps of estimating a loop length of a link comprising:

estimating a channel transfer function using one or more signals from an initialization, the initialization occurring between a first multicarrier transceiver connectable to a first end of the link and a second multicarrier transceiver connectable to a second end of the link, the one or more signals from the initialization having been transmitted or received using a multiplicity of discrete frequency carriers;

determining a theoretical channel transfer function of the link;

comparing the theoretical channel transfer function and the estimated channel transfer function; and

determining the estimated loop length of the link based upon a result of the comparison, wherein the theoretical channel transfer function has as an input at least one parameter related to a wire gauge of the link.

20. The media of claim 19, wherein the estimating of the channel transfer function uses a REVERB signal.

21. The media of claim 19, further comprising estimating a bridged tap length.

22. The media of claim 19, further comprising outputting the estimated loop length.

23. The media of claim 19, wherein the estimated channel transfer function includes multiple sections with varying wire gauges.

24. The media of claim 19, wherein the theoretical channel transfer includes multiple sections with varying wire gauges.

25. The media of claim 19, wherein one or more steps of the method are performed using at least one of a single program general purpose computer, a programmed general purpose computer, a special purpose computer, a programmed microprocessor, a microcontroller and peripheral integrated circuit element, an ASIC, an integrated circuit, a digital signal processor, a hard wired electronic or logic circuit, a discrete element circuit, a programmable logic device, a PLD, a PLA, an FPGA, a PAL, and a modem.

26. The media of claim 19, wherein the one or more signals utilize frequency carriers of a DSL system.

27. The media of claim 19, wherein the multiplicity of discrete frequency carriers are tones that are multiples of 4312.5 Hz.

28. A loop length system to estimate a loop length of a link comprising:

a loop length output device capable of;

estimating a channel transfer function using one or more signals from an initialization, the initialization occurring between a first multicarrier transceiver connectable to a first end of the link and a second multicarrier transceiver connectable to a second end of the link, the one or more signals from the initialization having been transmitted or received using a multiplicity of discrete frequency carriers;

determining a theoretical channel transfer function of the link;

comparing the theoretical channel transfer function and the estimated channel transfer function; and

determining the estimated loop length of the link based upon a result of the comparison, wherein the theoretical channel transfer function has as an input at least one parameter related to a wire gauge of the link.

29. The system of claim 28, wherein the estimating of the channel transfer function uses a REVERB signal.

30. The system of claim 28, further capable of estimating a bridged tap length.

31. The system of claim 28, further capable of outputting the estimated loop length.

32. The system of claim 28, wherein the estimated channel transfer function includes multiple sections with varying wire gauges.

33. The system of claim 28, wherein the theoretical channel transfer includes multiple sections with varying wire gauges.

34. The system of claim 28, further comprising at least one of a single program general purpose computer, a programmed general purpose computer, a special purpose computer, a programmed microprocessor, a microcontroller and peripheral integrated circuit element, an ASIC, an integrated circuit, a digital signal processor, a hard wired electronic or logic circuit, a discrete element circuit, a programmable logic device, a PLD, a PLA, an FPGA, a PAL, and a modem.

35. The system of claim 28, wherein the one or more signals utilize frequency carriers of a DSL system.
