Abstract

A linear friction welding system and method in one embodiment includes a first motor configured to rotate a first power shaft, a second motor configured to rotate a second power shaft, a memory including program instructions, and a controller operably connected to the first motor, the second motor, and the memory, and configured to execute the program instructions to identify a first current oscillation amplitude of a ram operably connected to the first power shaft and the second power shaft, determine a second desired oscillation amplitude for the ram, determine a minimum shift in relative angle between the first motor and the second motor to achieve the second desired oscillation amplitude, allocate the minimum shift in relative angle between the first motor and the second motor, and control the first motor and the second motor based upon the allocated minimum shift in relative angle.

Claims

1. A linear friction welding system comprising:

a first motor configured to rotate a first power shaft;

a second motor configured to rotate a second power shaft;

a memory including program instructions; and

a controller operably connected to the first motor, the second motor, and the memory, and configured to execute the program instructions to

identify a present oscillation amplitude of a ram operably connected to the first power shaft and the second power shaft,

determine a desired oscillation amplitude for the ram,

determine a minimum shift in relative angle between the first motor and the second motor to change from the present oscillation to the desired oscillation amplitude,

allocate the minimum shift in relative angle between the first motor and the second motor, and

control the first motor and the second motor based upon the allocated minimum shift in relative angle.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the minimum shift in relative angle is substantially evenly allocated between the first motor and the second motor.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the minimum shift in relative angle is allocated between the first motor and the second motor based upon an amperage threshold.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein:

the system is configured such that a first torque is required to increase the rotational speed of the first motor from a first speed to a second speed at a first operating condition of the system;

the system is configured such that a second torque is required to increase the rotational speed of the second motor from the first speed to the second speed at the first operating condition of the system;

the first torque is greater than the second torque; and

the minimum shift in relative angle is allocated between the first motor and the second motor based upon the difference between the first torque and the second torque.

5. The system of claim 4, wherein about two thirds of the minimum shift in relative angle is allocated to the second motor based upon the difference between the first torque and the second torque.

6. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

an amperage sensor associated with the first motor and operatively connected to the controller, wherein the minimum shift in relative angle is allocated between the first motor and the second motor based upon an amperage threshold.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein the controller is further configured to execute the program instructions to:

modify the allocation of the minimum shift in relative angle between the first motor and the second motor based upon an input from the amperage sensor.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the controller is further configured to execute the program instructions to:

monitor movement of the ram as the first motor and the second motor are being controlled based upon the allocated minimum shift in relative angle;

determine a revised minimum shift in relative angle between the first motor and the second motor to change to the second desired oscillation amplitude;

allocate the revised minimum shift in relative angle between the first motor and the second motor; and

control the first motor and the second motor based upon the revised allocated minimum shift in relative angle.

9. A method of linear friction welding comprising:

providing a first motor configured to rotate a first power shaft;

providing a second motor configured to rotate a second power shaft;

identifying a present oscillation amplitude of a ram operably connected to the first power shaft and the second power shaft;

determining a desired oscillation amplitude for the ram;

determining a minimum shift in relative angle between the first motor and the second motor to change from the present oscillation to the desired oscillation amplitude;

allocating the minimum shift in relative angle between the first motor and the second motor; and

controlling the first motor and the second motor based upon the allocated minimum shift in relative angle.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein allocating the minimum shift in relative angle comprises:

allocating the minimum shift in relative angle substantially evenly between the first motor and the second motor.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein allocating the minimum shift in relative angle comprises:

allocating the minimum shift in relative angle between the first motor and the second motor based upon an amperage threshold.

12. The method of claim 9, wherein allocating the minimum shift in relative angle comprises:

allocating the minimum shift in relative angle between the first motor and the second motor based upon a difference in torque characteristics of the first motor and the second motor.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein allocating the minimum shift in relative angle further comprises:

allocating about two thirds of the minimum shift in relative angle to the second motor based upon the difference in torque characteristics of the first motor and the second motor.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein allocating the minimum shift in relative angle further comprises:

allocating the minimum shift in relative angle between the first motor and the second motor based upon an amperage threshold.

15. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

modifying the allocation of the minimum shift in relative angle between the first motor and the second motor based upon an input from an amperage sensor.

16. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

monitoring movement of the ram as the first motor and the second motor are being controlled based upon the allocated minimum shift in relative angle;

determining a revised minimum shift in relative angle between the first motor and the second motor to change to the second desired oscillation amplitude;

allocating the revised minimum shift in relative angle between the first motor and the second motor, and

controlling the first motor and the second motor based upon the revised allocated minimum shift in relative angle.
