1. A mesh for use in the repair of herniated tissue comprising a mesh and a coating composition including:

  • (a) a naturally occurring hydrophilic polymer selected from proteins, polysaccharides, and glycosaminoglycans, wherein the naturally occurring hydrophilic polymer is not methylated collagen;

    (b) a first synthetic polymer having m nucleophilic groups, wherein m≧

    2;

    (c) a second synthetic polymer having n electrophilic groups capable of reaction with the m nucleophilic groups to form covalent bonds, wherein n≧

    2; and

    wherein each of the first synthetic polymer and the second synthetic polymer is poly (alkylene oxide) and crosslinking of the coating composition results in a biocompatible, crosslinked matrix.
