Abstract

The present invention is a Miniature Vein Enhancer that includes a Miniature Projection Head. The Miniature Projection Head may be operated in one of three modes, AFM, DBM, and RTM. The Miniature Projection Head of the present invention projects an image of the veins of a patient, which aids the practitioner in pinpointing a vein for an intravenous drip, blood test, and the like. The Miniature projection head may have a cavity for a power source or it may have a power source located in a body portion of the Miniature Vein Enhancer. The Miniature Vein Enhancer may be attached to one of several improved needle protectors, or the Miniature Vein Enhancer may be attached to a body similar to a flashlight for hand held use. The Miniature Vein Enhancer of the present invention may also be attached to a magnifying glass, a flat panel display, and the like.

Claims

1. A portable handheld vein enhancing device, for use in imaging one or more subcutaneous blood vessels of a target surface, said portable handheld vein enhancing device comprising:

a first laser configured to emit a beam of light comprising a first wavelength;

one or more movable mirrors configured to selectively move to cause said beam of light from said first laser to be transmitted onto the target surface in a repeated or a non-repeated pattern;

one or more photo detectors configured to detect said first wavelength of light after being reflected from the target surface, said reflected light creating a contrasted image formed by differential amounts of absorption and reflection, of said transmitted first wavelength of light, between blood in the one or more subcutaneous blood vessels and the surrounding tissue therein;

said one or more photo detectors further configured to output a signal representing said contrasted image;

a second laser configured to project a beam of visible light comprising a second wavelength, said second laser being positioned side-by-side and parallel with said first laser with a gap therebetween, with said projected beam of light from said second laser thereby lagging behind said light beam emitted from said first laser;

wherein said one or more movable mirrors are further configured to selectively move said projected beam of light from said second laser onto the target surface in said repeated or said non-repeated pattern with said beam of light from said first laser; and

wherein said second laser is further configured to be responsive to said signal outputted by said one or more photo detectors, said second laser thereby projecting said contrasted image, with a visually imperceptible offset between said emitted beam of said first laser and said projected beam of said second laser, to be in-focus and closely aligned on the target surface to overlay the one or more subcutaneous blood vessels therein, regardless of a distance of said portable handheld vein enhancing device from the target surface.

2. The portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 1 further comprising a hand-holdable housing;

and wherein said one or more movable mirrors selectively move to cause said beam of light from said first and second lasers to be transmitted out through an exit orifice in said housing.

The portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 2 wherein said one or more photo detectors comprises two spatially separated photo detectors, said two spatially separated photo detectors being positioned on opposite sides of said exit orifice in said housing and being aimed generally in a direction being the same as said first laser beam is emitted.

4. The portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 2 further comprising a trigger switch mounted to said housing, said switch having a first position comprising an off position, and said switch having one or more on positions to control an output intensity of said lasers.

5. The portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 2, wherein said housing comprises a head portion and a handle portion, said head portion of said housing and said handle portion of said housing being releasably secured together using mating latches;

wherein said head portion of said housing receives said first and second lasers, said one or more movable mirrors, and said one or more photo detectors; and

wherein said handle portion of said housing receives a battery.

The portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 5 further comprising two mating electrical connectors, a first one of said mating electrical connectors being on said head position of said housing, and a second one of said two mating connectors being on said handle portion of said housing.

7. The portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 1 further comprising a battery.

8. The portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 1 further comprising one or more lenses for said one or more photo detectors, said one or more lenses being from the group of lenses consisting of:

a dome-shaped lens; and

a Fresnel lens.

9. The portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 1 further comprising one or more filters placed in front of one or more photo detectors.

10. The portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 1 further comprising one or more microprocessors and memories.

11. The portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 1 further comprising a printed circuit assembly, said printed circuit assembly comprising a control circuit;

and wherein said control circuit receives power from a battery and said control circuit provides voltage regulation to said portable handheld vein enhancing device.

12. The portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 11 wherein said printed circuit assembly comprises two spatially separated photo detectors and a vein detection circuit.

13. The portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 1 further comprising one or more holder assemblies and heat sinks, said first and second lasers being mounted therein.

14. The portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 1 wherein said first wavelength of light comprises a wavelength of infrared light;

and wherein said second wavelength of light is in the range of approximately 380 nm to approximately 750 nm.

15. The portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 14 wherein said first laser preferably emits light at a wavelength of 740 nm or 785 nm;

and wherein said second laser preferably projects light at a wavelength of 638 nm.

16. A portable handheld vein enhancing device, for use in imaging one or more subcutaneous blood vessels of a target surface, said portable handheld vein enhancing device comprising:

a first laser configured to emit a beam of light comprising a first wavelength;

one or more movable mirrors configured to selectively move to cause said beam of light from said first laser to be transmitted onto the target surface in a repeated or a non-repeated pattern;

one or more photo detectors configured to detect said first wavelength of light after being reflected from the target surface, said reflected light creating a contrasted image formed by differential amounts of absorption and reflection, of said transmitted first wavelength of light, between the one or more subcutaneous blood vessels and the surrounding tissue therein;

said one or more photo detectors further configured to output a signal representing said contrasted image;

a second laser configured to project a beam of visible light comprising a second wavelength, said second laser being positioned side-by-side and parallel with said first laser with a gap therebetween, with said projected beam of light from said second laser thereby lagging behind said light beam emitted from said first laser;

wherein said one or more movable mirrors are further configured to selectively move said projected beam of light from said second laser onto the target surface in said repeated or said non-repeated pattern with said beam of light from said first laser; and

wherein said second laser is further configured to be responsive to said signal outputted by said one or more photo detectors, said second laser thereby projecting said contrasted image, with a visually imperceptible offset between said emitted beam of said first laser and said projected beam of said second laser, to be in-focus on the target surface to overlay the one or more subcutaneous blood vessels therein, regardless of a distance of said portable handheld vein enhancing device from the target surface.

17. The portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 16 further comprising a hand-holdable housing;

and wherein said one or more movable minors selectively move to cause said beam of light from said first and second lasers to be transmitted out through an exit orifice in said housing.

The portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 17 wherein said one or more photo detectors comprises two spatially separated photo detectors, said two spatially separated photo detectors being positioned on opposite sides of said exit orifice in said housing and being aimed generally in a direction being the same as said first laser beam is emitted.

19. The portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 18 further comprising a battery.

20. The portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 19 further comprising one or more microprocessors and memories.

21. The portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 20 further comprising a printed circuit assembly, said printed circuit assembly comprising a control circuit;

and wherein said battery provides power to said control circuit and said control circuit provides voltage regulation to said portable handheld vein enhancing device.

22. The portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 21 further comprising a trigger switch mounted to said housing, said switch having a first position comprising an off position, and said switch having one or more on positions to control an output intensity of said lasers.

23. The portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 22 wherein said printed circuit assembly holds said two spatially separated photo detectors and a vein detection circuit.

24. The portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 23 further comprising one or more holder assemblies and heat sinks, said first and second lasers being mounted therein;

and further comprising a trigger switch mounted to said housing, said switch having a first position comprising an off position, and said switch having one or more on positions to control an output intensity of said lasers.

25. The portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 24 further comprising one or more filters placed in front of said two spatially separated photo detectors, said one or more filters being adapted to transmit only said first wavelength of light.

26. The portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 25 further comprising a battery door cover being releasably securable to said housing.

27. The portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 26 further comprising one or more openings in said housing being in proximity to said heat sinks and/or being in proximity to said first and second lasers.

28. The portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 27 further comprising one or more lenses for said two spatially separated photo detectors, said one or more lenses being from the group of lenses consisting of:

a dome-shaped lens; and

a Fresnel lens.

29. The portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 28, wherein said housing comprises a head portion and a handle portion, said head portion of said housing and said handle portion of said housing being releasably secured together using mating latches;

wherein said head portion of said housing receives said first and second lasers, said one or more movable mirrors, said two spatially separated photo detectors, said one or more microprocessors and memories, said printed circuit assembly and circuits thereon, and said heat sinks; and

wherein said handle portion of said housing receives said battery.

30. The portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 29 further comprising two mating electrical connectors, a first one of said mating electrical connectors being on said head portion of said housing, and a second one of said two mating connectors being on said handle portion of said housing.

31. The portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 30 wherein said first wavelength of light comprises a wavelength of infrared light;

and wherein said second wavelength of light is in the range of approximately 380 nm to approximately 750 nm.

32. The portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 31 wherein said first laser preferably emits light at a wavelength of 740 nm or 785 nm;

and wherein said second laser preferably projects light at a wavelength of 638 nm.

33. A process for hand-held imaging of one or more subcutaneous blood vessels of a target surface comprising:

emitting a beam of light at a first wavelength using a first laser;

moving one or more mirrors selectively to cause said beam of light from said first laser to be transmitted onto the target surface in a repeated or a non-repeated pattern;

detecting, using one or more photo detectors, said first wavelength of light being reflected from the target surface, said reflected light comprising a contrasted image formed by differential amounts of absorption and reflection, of said transmitted first wavelength of light, between the one or more subcutaneous blood vessels and the surrounding tissue therein;

outputting, by said one or more photo detectors, a signal representing said contrasted image;

positioning a second laser side-by-side with said first laser to be parallel thereto, with a gap therebetween;

projecting a beam of visible light at a second wavelength using said second laser, onto the target surface in said repeated or said non-repeated pattern via said one or more mirrors along with said beam of light from said first laser by responding to said outputted signal from said one or more photo detectors, wherein said projected beam of light from said second laser lags behind said light beam emitted from said first laser, resulting in an imperceptible offset between said detecting and said projecting of said contrasted image, to be in-focus and closely aligned on the target surface to overlay the one or more subcutaneous blood vessels thereon, regardless of a distance of said portable handheld vein enhancing device from the target surface.

34. The process for hand-held imaging according to claim 33 further comprising supplying power to said first and second laser using a battery.

35. The process for hand-held imaging according to claim 34 further comprising using one or more microprocessors and memories for controlling said first and second lasers.

36. The process for hand-held imaging according to claim 35 further comprising using said one or more microprocessors and memories for extending battery life by causing said moving of said one or more mirrors to be at a natural resonance frequency.

37. The process for hand-held imaging according to claim 36 further comprising:

receiving power from said battery into a control circuit on a printed circuit assembly; and

regulating voltage to said first and second lasers using said control circuit.

38. The process for hand-held imaging according to claim 37 further comprising:

mounting said first and second lasers, said one or more moving mirrors, said one or more photo detectors, said one or more microprocessors and memories, and said printed circuit assembly into a hand-holdable housing; and

with said moving of said one or more movable mirrors causing said beam of light from said first and second lasers to be transmitted out through an exit orifice in said housing.

39. The process for hand-held imaging according to claim 38 further comprising detecting said first wavelength of light being reflected from the target surface using two spatially separated photo detectors being positioned on said printed circuit assembly to be on opposite sides of said exit orifice in said housing.

40. The process for hand-held imaging according to claim 39 further comprising managing bright edges of a transmitted pattern of laser light resulting from slowing toward the end of mirror movements, by one or more of:

blocking of said bright edges by clipping of said edges by being beyond said exit orifice; and

reducing an amplitude of said laser light during said slow end movements.

41. A portable handheld vein enhancing device, for use in imaging one or more subcutaneous blood vessels of a target surface, said portable handheld vein enhancing device comprising:

a first laser configured to emit a beam of light comprising a first wavelength;

one or more movable mirrors configured to selectively move to cause said beam of light from said first laser to be transmitted onto the target surface in a pattern;

one or more photo detectors configured to detect said first wavelength of light after being reflected from the target surface, said reflected light creating a contrasted image formed by differential amounts of absorption and reflection, of said transmitted first wavelength of light, between the one or more subcutaneous blood vessels and the surrounding tissue therein;

said one or more photo detectors further configured to output a signal representing said contrasted image;

a second laser configured to project a beam of visible light comprising a second wavelength, said second laser being positioned parallel to said first laser with a gap therebetween, with said projected beam of light from said second laser thereby lagging behind said light beam emitted from said first laser;

wherein said one or more movable mirrors are further configured to selectively move said projected beam of light from said second laser onto the target surface in said pattern with said beam of light from said first laser; and

wherein said second laser is further configured to be responsive to said signal outputted by said one or more photo detectors, said second laser thereby projecting said contrasted image, with an offset between said emitted beam of said first laser and said projected beam of said second laser, to be in-focus and closely aligned on the target surface to overlay the one or more subcutaneous blood vessels therein, regardless of a distance of said portable handheld vein enhancing device from the target surface.

42. A portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claims 41 wherein said one or more movable mirrors are further configured to selectively move to cause said beams of light from said first laser and said second laser to be transmitted onto the target surface in a repeated pattern.

43. A portable handheld vein enhancing device according to claim 41 wherein said one or more movable mirrors are further configured to selectively move to cause said beams of light from said first laser and said second laser to be transmitted onto the target surface in a non-repeated pattern.
