Abstract

A variety of lighting devices are provided to provide hands-free illumination to enable illumination without needed to hold a flashlight. The hands-free lighting includes lighted headgear, lighted eyeglass frames, lighted clothing, or a lighted head band.

Claims

1. An LED comprising:

a lens having opposite proximal and distal ends and a longitudinal axis extending between the ends;

a cylindrical portion of the lens extending along the axis from the proximal end toward the distal end;

a cap portion of the lens at the distal end thereof;

a pair of spaced electrical leads extending from the proximal end of the lens so that there is an interface between the leads and the lens;

an illumination chip in the lens for generating a light beam of a predetermined configuration; and

a covering that is a single piece of an opaque, light blocking material of flexible construction for covering at least a portion of the pair of electrical leads and the lens cylindrical portion with the single piece covering arranged and sized to extend in an axial direction from the pair of the electrical leads to extend along, on and in direct engagement with the covered portion thereof, across the interface between the leads and the lens, onto the proximal end of the lens and continuing to extend axially on the lens cylindrical portion toward the distal end of the lens and axially beyond the illumination chip for blocking light from the illumination chip from projecting therethrough, with the direct engagement of the single piece covering on the pair of the electrical leads forming a covering and lead assembly with rigidity for resisting deformation of each of the leads.

2. The LED of claim 1, wherein the cylindrical portion further comprises a light reflecting layer extending from the proximal end to the distal end of the lens.

3. The LED of claim 1, wherein the flexible single piece covering of opaque, light blocking material is wrapped tightly about the cylindrical portion.

4. The LED of claim 1, wherein the light blocking material is a thin film material on the lens cylindrical portion and extending beyond the proximal end of the lens to partially cover the LED leads extending from the proximal end of the lens to provide support thereto.

5. The LED of claim 2, wherein the light reflecting layer is selected from the group comprising a silver coating, a nickel coating, a lithium silver plating, and a nickel lithium plating.

The LED of claim 1, wherein the single piece covering of opaque, light blocking material is a thin layer configured to extend about the lens cylindrical portion to block incident light emanating from the illumination chip in one radial direction and permitting incident light to emanate from the illumination chip in a different radial direction.

7. The LED of claim 1, wherein the single piece covering of opaque, light blocking material comprises tape adhered to the lens cylindrical portion.

8. The LED of claim 7, wherein the tape is disposed on opposite curved sides of the lens cylindrical portion to block incident light from the illumination chip at the opposite sides of the lens cylindrical portion.

The LED of claim 1, wherein the single piece covering of opaque, light blocking material is a thin film material on the lens cylindrical portion and the film extends in an axial direction beyond the proximal end of the lens to cover the LED leads extending outwardly from the proximal end of the lens.

The LED of claim 1 in combination with a hat having a brim, wherein the LED is mounted to the brim of the hat and wherein the single piece covering of opaque, light blocking material is positioned at opposing outer curved surface portions of the lens cylindrical portion to block incident light from being projected in an upward and a downward direction above and below the hat brim.

The LED of claim 1, in combination with a hat having a brim, wherein the LED is mounted to the brim of the hat and wherein the single piece covering of opaque, light blocking material comprises tape positioned about a lower portion of the lens cylindrical portion and the tape extends from the proximal end of the lens toward the distal end of the lens beyond the illumination chip so that tape is oriented to block incident light form the illumination chip in a downward direction below the hat brim into a wearer'"'"'s eyes.

12. The LED of claim 1, wherein the single piece covering of opaque, light blocking material is a shrink film.

13. Lighted headgear comprising:

a crown portion for receipt on a wearer'"'"'s head;

a brim portion extending from a forward, lower edge of the crown portion to an outboard edge of the brim portion, the brim portion having a shape retentive brim member and a layer of fabric material that covers the brim member;

a LED mounted to the brim portion for directing illumination outwardly of the headgear; and

a layer of opaque, light blocking material comprising a single piece of adhesive material applied over at least a lower portion of the LED so as to be positioned between the LED lower portion and the layer of brim fabric material to block incident light from the LED from being projected in a downward direction below the brim,

wherein the LED further comprises a lens having proximal and distal ends and a longitudinal axis extending between the ends, a pair of electrical leads extending away from the proximal end of the lens, a cylindrical portion of the lens extending along the axis from the proximal end toward the distal end, a cap portion of the lens at the distal end thereof, and an illumination chip in the lens for generating a light beam of a predetermined configuration, and wherein the single piece of adhesive material is applied on and in engagement with the lens to extend axially from the proximal end to an axial position on the lens beyond the illumination chip, the single piece of adhesive material being sized to cover an interface between the pair of electrical leads extending from the proximal end of the lens and into engagement with the pair of electrical leads to extend thereon and therealong to provide a more rigid assembly thereof to minimize strain on the leads at the interface.

The lighted headgear of claim 13, wherein the single piece of adhesive material extends about the cylindrical portion of the lens to block incident light emanating from the illumination chip in one radial direction and permitting incident light to emanate from the illumination chip in a different radial direction.

15. The lighted headgear of claim 13, wherein the single piece of adhesive material covers opposite sides of the LED cylindrical portion.

16. The lighted headgear of claim 13, wherein the single piece of adhesive material comprises a single piece of tape that covers opposite circumferential sides of the cylindrical portion of the lens to block incident light in opposing non-axial directions.
