32. A process for preparing roofing granules, the process comprising:

(a) providing cores having an average ultraviolet transmission of greater than sixty percent and an average solar reflectance of greater than sixty percent, the core having an exterior surface; (b) applying a UV coating composition on the exterior surface of the cores; (c) curing the UV coating composition to provide a coating on the exterior surface of the cores to form a UV coating layer, the UV coating having an average ultraviolet transmission of less than ten percent and an average near infrared transmission of greater than sixty percent. - View Dependent Claims (33, 34, 35)

A roofing granule comprising a core comprising an agglomerate comprising base particles and an agglomerate binder, the base particles having an average ultraviolet transmission of greater than about 60 percent and an average near infrared reflectance of greater than about 60 percent, and the agglomerate binder having an average ultraviolet transmission of less than 10 percent and an average transmission in the near infrared and visible ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum of greater than about 60 percent.
