Multi-layer braided structures for occluding vascular defects and for occluding fluid flow through portions of the vasculature of the body
First Claim
1. A collapsible implantable medical device comprising an outer metal fabric surrounding an inner metal fabric, said outer and inner metal fabrics each having a plurality of braided metal strands with an expanded preset configuration, each of the outer and inner metal fabrics having a proximal end and a distal end, the outer metal fabric surrounding the inner metal fabric from the proximal end of the inner metal fabric to the distal end of the inner metal fabric, at least one of said proximal or distal ends of the outer or inner metal fabrics comprising at least one fastener adapted to secure the plurality of braided metal strands of the inner and/or outer metal fabrics together, said inner and outer fabrics configured to facilitate thrombus formation to thereby create an occlusion, wherein said occlusion blocks fluid flow passage through a portion of the vasculature of a body, said expanded preset configuration being deformable to a lesser cross-sectional dimension for delivery through a channel in a patient'"'"'s body, the outer and inner metal fabrics having a memory property such that the medical device tends to return to said expanded preset configuration when unconstrained.

Abstract
A collapsible medical device and associated methods of occluding an abnormal opening in, for example, a body organ, wherein the medical device is shaped from plural layers of a heat-treatable metal fabric. Each of the fabric layers is formed from a plurality of metal strands and the assembly is heat-treated within a mold in order to substantially set a desired shape of the device. By incorporating plural layers in the thus-formed medical device, the ability of the device to rapidly occlude an abnormal opening in a body organ is significantly improved.

34. An implantable occluder adapted to occlude a target site in a vessel, the occluder comprising:
- a tubular member comprising at least two layers of braided fabric having a preset expanded configuration, each of the layers having proximal and distal ends and layered with respect to one another such that one of the layers extends from the proximal end of the other layer to the distal end of the other layer, each of the layers configured to be constrained to a reduced configuration for delivery to the target site and to at least partially return to the preset expanded configuration within the target site when unconstrained, wherein each of the layers comprises at least three expanded volume sections in the preset expanded configuration, each of the at least three expanded volume sections comprising a proximal and distal face, the at least three expanded volume sections arranged in a repeating pattern with a reduced diameter segment coupling each pair of expanded volume sections, and wherein at least one expanded volume section comprises a cross-sectional dimension at least as large as that of the target site.

49. A medical device, for occlusion of a target vessel in a patient'"'"'s body, comprising:
-
a sack comprising a plurality of braided strands each of the plurality of braided strands having a proximal end and a distal end, the sack having a closed distal end and an opposing proximal end, the proximal end of the sack corresponding to the proximal and distal ends of each of the plurality of braided strands; the sack comprising a preset expanded configuration shaped for occluding said target vessel, the expanded preset configuration being deformable to a lesser cross-sectional dimension for delivery through a channel in a patient'"'"'s body, the sack having a memory property such that the medical occlusion device tends to return to the expanded preset configuration when unconstrained; and at least one fastener at the proximal end adapted to secure the ends of the plurality of braided strands together.
