Remote tissue retraction device
First Claim
1. A surgical method, comprising:
- inserting a retractor device transorally to a cavity of a stomach;
actuating the retractor device to smooth a lining of a wall of the stomach by removing wrinkles formed by rugae of the stomach, wherein actuating the retractor device comprises applying a vacuum to suction the lining onto a vacuum port in a distal portion of the retractor device, and then translating the vacuum port distally relative to a proximal portion of the retractor device positioned within the cavity of the stomach; and
after applying the vacuum and translating the vacuum port distally, applying a tissue treatment device to the smoothed lining, wherein translating the vacuum port distally comprises moving the vacuum port along a longitudinal axis of the proximal portion of the retractor device.

Abstract
A medical device for managing tissue in an organ, such as the stomach, for retracting or positioning tissue and related organs to allow certain regions of the stomach to be acquired for a gastroplasty procedure. The medical device includes an elongated body having a proximal end and a distal end, and a tissue treatment device attached to the distal end of the elongated body. The tissue treatment device includes a first jaw opposite a second jaw, and each jaw is adapted to acquire tissue. A retractor is disposed along the tissue treatment device and adapted to be moveable from a delivery position to a retraction position to move or manage the tissue of the stomach. The medical device also includes a collapsible barrier disposed between the first and second jaws of the tissue treatment device to direct tissue into the first and second jaws separately.

6. A surgical method, comprising:
-
inserting a retractor device transorally to a cavity of a stomach, the retractor device having an elongate body with a vacuum port located distal to a distal end of the elongate body; applying a vacuum via the retractor device to suction stomach tissue onto the vacuum port; with the stomach tissue suctioned onto the vacuum port, moving the vacuum port relative to the elongate body and away from the elongate body to move the suctioned stomach tissue; and after moving the vacuum port and with the stomach tissue suctioned onto the vacuum port, moving the elongate body to reposition the suctioned stomach tissue, wherein moving the vacuum port comprises moving the vacuum port along a longitudinal axis of the elongate body. - View Dependent Claims (7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13)
