Abstract

A dialysis machine includes: (i) a source of peritoneal dialysis solution; (ii) a patient line for passing the peritoneal dialysis solution to the peritoneal cavity of a patient; (iii) a pump for pumping the peritoneal dialysis solution to the peritoneal cavity via the patient line; (iv) a heater for heating the peritoneal dialysis solution prior to the dialysis solution reaching the patient line, the heater including first and second heating elements; (v) a voltage input from a remote power source; and (vi) a control scheme responsive to the voltage input and configured to (a) automatically maintain a proper dialysis solution temperature for the patient via the first and second heating elements regardless of the voltage input wherein the control (b) account for an inlet temperature of the dialysis solution to the heater and (c) account for heater efficiency.

Claims

1. A dialysis machine comprising:

a source of peritoneal dialysis solution;

a patient line for passing the peritoneal dialysis solution to the peritoneal cavity of a patient;

a pump for pumping the peritoneal dialysis solution to the peritoneal cavity via the patient line;

a heater for heating the peritoneal dialysis solution prior to the dialysis solution reaching the patient line, the heater including first and second heating elements;

a voltage input from a remote power source; and

a control scheme responsive to the voltage input and configured to (i) account for the voltage input to automatically maintain a proper dialysis solution temperature for the patient via the first and second heating elements, (ii) account for an inlet temperature of the dialysis solution to the heater and (iii) account for heater efficiency.

2. The dialysis machine of claim 1, wherein the first and second heating elements include upper and lower heater plates.

3. The dialysis machine of claim 1, wherein the pump is a membrane pump having at least one flexible sheet that is moved for pumping the peritoneal dialysis solution to the patient line.

4. The dialysis machine of claim 3, wherein the membrane is moved mechanically and pneumatically.

5. The dialysis machine of claim 3, wherein the control scheme is configured additionally to account for a frequency of strokes of the membrane.

6. The dialysis machine of claim 1, which is configured to accept up to a 240 VAC input from the power source.

7. The dialysis machine of claim 1, wherein the control scheme is configured to maintain the proper dialysis solution temperature by controlling a duty cycle of the first and second heating elements of the heater.

8. The dialysis machine of claim 1, wherein the control scheme is configured to account for the voltage input to the heater by determining heater power using the voltage input.

9. The dialysis machine of claim 1, wherein the voltage input is accounted for in a first part of the control scheme, the first part of the control scheme combined with a second part of the control scheme to maintain the proper dialysis solution temperature.

10. The dialysis machine of claim 9, wherein the second part of the control scheme employs fuzzy logic.
