System and method for altering a display mode

1. A portable noninvasive physiological monitor configured to accept detector signals from a noninvasive sensor, said detector signals responsive to light attenuated by tissue of a patient, the monitor comprising:
- a processor configured to process said detector signals to determine output values indicative of physiological parameters of said patient;
a user interface configured to allow users to configure programs to be executed on said processor;
a display configured to display said output values in a plurality of display orientations;
a portable housing accommodating said display, said user interface and said processor, said housing including a width different than a height generally associated with a display side of said housing, the housing configured to mechanically dock with a docking stationan output from said housing, wherein said processor provides an output signal over said output configured to cause an externally connected pulse oximeter to compute and display measurement values for said patient substantially equivalent to one or more of said output values; and
an orientation sensor included within said housing, the orientation sensor configured to output an orientation signal indicative of an orientation of the housing,wherein the processor includes at least two modes of operation, a first mode corresponding to when said housing is in a docked configuration and a second mode when said housing is in an undocked portable configuration, said first mode including an automatic adjustment of said display orientation responsive to a determination of said orientation of said housing responsive to said orientation signal, and said second mode including manual adjustment of said display orientation responsive to a said user interface.

Abstract
A sensor, such as, for example, a gravity-responsive sensor, provides an output used to select an orientation of a display of a display device. For example, the output may indicate that the orientation of the display should comprise a portrait or landscape orientation, an orientation rotated, such as, for example, ninety degrees (90°), one hundred and eighty degrees (180°), two hundred and seventy degrees (270°), or the like. In addition, one or more manual switches, buttons, or display icons may be actuated or otherwise selected to manually set the orientation of the display.

3. A method of orienting a display of a physiological monitor, the method comprising within a housing of said physiological monitor:

outputting signals from said housing configured to drive emitters of a noninvasive sensor associated with a measurement site on a patient; receiving signals within said housing indicative of physiological parameters of said patient from a detector of said noninvasive sensor, said detector configured to detect light from said emitters attenuated by tissue of said patient at said measurement site; processing said signals within said housing to determine display indicia responsive to one or more of said physiological parameters; determining a docking state of said monitor; receiving an orientation signal from an orientation sensor; outputting to an external pulse oximeter processor, signals configured to cause said external pulse oximeter processor to compute and display on a display of said external pulse oximeter processor display indicia substantially equivalent to one or more measurements of said display indicia associated with said physiological monitor; orienting said display indicia with respect to a display according to a manual orientation selection when said monitor is in an undocked state, said display integral with said monitor and said monitor being wider than tall as determined from a display side of said housing when said housing is in a generally horizontal orientation; and orienting said display indicia with respect to the display according to said orientation signal when said monitor is in a docked state. - View Dependent Claims (4, 5, 6, 7)

8. A medical device capable of determining one or more physiological parameters of a patient and displaying indicia related to the physiological parameters in at least two orientations, the medical device comprising:

an input configured to receive a physiological sensor signal responsive to light attenuated by a measurement site of said patient; a processor configured to receive the physiological sensor signal, to process said signal to determine display indicia responsive to said sensor signal and indicative of said one or more physiological parameters of said patient being monitored; a display configured to present the display indicia in at least two orientations including a vertical and horizontal orientation; a housing accommodating said processor and said display, said housing defining a periphery of said medical device and including a display side, said display side including a width larger than a height when said housing is in a horizontal orientation, said width smaller than said height when said housing is in a vertical orientation; and an output from said housing, wherein said processor provides an output signal over said output configured to cause an externally connected pulse oximeter to compute and display measurement values for said patient substantially equivalent to one or more of said display indicia. - View Dependent Claims (9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21)

22. A method for orienting display indicia on a display with respect to a housing of a physiological monitoring instrument, the method comprising from within said housing or said instrument:

receiving a signal from a noninvasive sensor within said housing, said signal responsive to light attenuated by body tissue of a patient; processing with a processor within said housing said received signal to determine measurement values of one or more physiological parameters of said patient; determining with said processor display indicia indicative of said measurement values; outputting to an external processor, signals configured to cause said external processor to compute and display on a display of said external processor one or more measurement values substantially equivalent to one or more of said measurement values associated with said display of said housing; orienting the display indicia on a display with respect to said housing according to a default orientation, said default orientation including one of at least two orientations, said housing including a display side having an approximate width wider than an approximate height; and reorienting the display indicia on the display with respect to said housing, said reorientation responsive to an orientation signal. - View Dependent Claims (23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37)
