1. A method of treatment of a patient comprising:

  • implanting a cardiac stimulus device consisting of a canister and a lead, the canister including one or more electrodes thereon, the lead including a stimulus delivery electrode, such that the cardiac stimulus device, once implanted is entirely disposed in non-vascular and non-cardiac locations;

    wherein implantation is performed such that the cardiac stimulus device senses cardiac signals in order to identify an arrhythmia using at least one electrode on the lead in combination with at least one electrode on the canister, with neither electrode that is used for sensing disposed in or on the heart of the patient; and

    wherein implantation is performed such that the cardiac stimulus device will, in response to a detected arrhythmia, deliver defibrillation therapy to the heart of the patient using only the stimulus delivery electrode of the lead and an electrode disposed on the canister, such that therapy will be delivered with neither therapy delivery electrode disposed in or on the heart of the patient.
