Abstract

Video signals for a mobile terminal are converted to accommodate reproduction by an alternative display terminal. The video signal is processed to provide a converted video signal appropriate for an alternative display terminal that is separate from the mobile terminal. This converted video signal is then provided for the alternative display terminal to accommodate the corresponding video display on a screen provided by the alternative (e.g., external) display terminal.

Claims

1. A method for processing signals to accommodate reproduction by an alternative display terminal, the method comprising:

receiving, by a conversion device, a video signal from a mobile terminal device;

processing, by the conversion device, the video signal to provide a converted video signal for use by the alternative display terminal, wherein the processing by the conversion device includes converting a signal format to a different format for output to the alternative display terminal, wherein the converted video signal provided by the conversion device comprises a high definition television (HDTV) digital signal; and

providing the converted video signal from the conversion device to the alternative display terminal through a high definition multimedia interface (HDMI) to accommodate displaying the video content by the alternative display terminal.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the converted signal is encoded according to a high definition multimedia interface (HDMI) requirement by the conversion device.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the mobile terminal device is a cellular phone or a personal digital assistant (PDA).

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the video signal is received from a wireless communication network.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the wireless communication network is a cellular communication network.

6. The method of claim 2, wherein the mobile terminal device comprises a mobile terminal interface that resides inside a mobile terminal;

wherein the conversion device resides in the mobile terminal and receives the video signal from the mobile terminal interface.

7. The method of claim 3, wherein receiving the video signal, processing the video signal to provide the converted video signal, and providing the converted video signal to the alternative display terminal are performed in an intermediate device that is separate from the mobile terminal device and the alternative display terminal;

wherein the converted signal is encoded according to a high definition multimedia interface (HDMI) by the intermediate device.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein the mobile terminal device provides the video signal to a housing through a housing interface, such that said receiving of the video signal is through the housing interface of the housing.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the mobile terminal device receives power through the housing interface.

11. The method of claim 7, wherein the intermediate device receives an RF signal that includes the video signal.

The method of claim 3, wherein the mobile terminal device and an intermediate device, that is separate from the mobile terminal device and the alternative display terminal, collectively perform the receiving the video signal, processing the video signal to provide the converted video signal, and providing the converted video signal to the alternative display terminal;

and wherein the converted signal is encoded according to a high definition multimedia interface (HDMI).

13. The method of claim 3, wherein a housing having a housing interface is configured to interface with the cellular phone, and wherein the housing provides the converted video signal to the alternative display terminal through the HDMI.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein at least a portion of said processing the video signal occurs in the housing;

wherein the converted signal is encoded according to a high definition multimedia interface (HDMI) requirement.

17. The method of claim 3, wherein the video signal received by the conversion device is part of a multimedia signal that is originally received by the mobile terminal device before it is received by the conversion device from the mobile terminal device;

wherein the converted signal is encoded according to a high definition multimedia interface (HDMI) requirement by the conversion device.

18. The method of claim 3, wherein the mobile terminal device receives power through a connection to the alternative display.

19. The method of claim 1, wherein said processing comprises setting a power level for the converted video signal to accommodate transmission of the converted video signal to the alternative display through the HDMI for reproduction.

20. The method of claim 2, wherein the wireless network communication includes a wireless local area network communication.

The method of 7, wherein receiving the video signal, processing the video signal to the converted video signal, and providing the converted video signal to the alternative display terminal are performed using power from a source that differs from the internal power supply of the mobile terminal device.

16. The method of claim 8, therein the mobile terminal device receives power through the intermediary device.

60. The method of claim 8, wherein the power is received through the external display.

15. The method of 13, the cellular phone receives power through the housing interface.

21. A non-transitory computer readable medium storing program code for operating a conversion device, the program code being executable to perform operations comprising:

receiving, by the conversion device, a video signal from a mobile terminal device;

processing, by the conversion device, the video signal to provide a converted video signal for use by an alternative display terminal, wherein the processing by the conversion device includes converting a signal format to a different format for output to the alternative display terminal;

wherein the converted video signal provided by the conversion device comprises a high definition television (HDTV) digital signal; and

providing the converted video signal from the conversion device to the alternative display terminal through a high definition multimedia interface (HDMI) to accommodate displaying the video content by the alternative display terminal.

22. The computer readable medium of claim 21, wherein the converted signal is encoded according to a high definition multimedia interface (HDMI) requirement by the conversion device.

23. The computer readable medium of claim 21, wherein the mobile terminal device is a cellular phone or a personal digital assistant (PDA).

24. The computer readable medium of claim 21, wherein the video signal is received from a wireless communication network.

25. The computer readable medium of claim 24, wherein the wireless communication network includes a cellular communication network.

26. The computer readable medium of claim 22, wherein the mobile terminal device comprises a mobile terminal interface that resides inside a mobile terminal;

wherein the conversion device resides in the mobile terminal and receives the video signal from the mobile terminal interface.

27. The computer readable medium of claim 23, wherein receiving the video signal, processing the video signal to provide the converted video signal, and providing the converted video signal to the alternative display terminal are performed in an intermediate device that is separate from the mobile terminal device and the alternative display terminal;

wherein the converted signal is encoded according to a high definition multimedia interface (HDMI) requirement.

28. The computer readable medium of claim 27, wherein receiving the video signal, processing the video signal to the converted video signal, and providing the converted video signal to the alternative display terminal are performed using power from a source that differs from the internal power supply of the mobile terminal device.

29. The computer readable medium of claim 28, wherein the mobile terminal device provides the video signal to a housing through a housing interface, such that said receiving of the video signal is through the housing interface of the housing.

30. The computer readable medium of claim 29, wherein the mobile terminal device receives power through the housing interface.

31. The computer readable medium of claim 27, wherein the intermediate device receives an RF signal that includes the video signal.

32. The computer readable medium of claim 23, wherein the mobile terminal device and an intermediate device, that is separate from the mobile terminal device and the alternative display terminal, collectively perform the receiving the video signal, processing the video signal to provide the converted video signal, and providing the converted video signal to the alternative display terminal;

and wherein the converted signal is encoded according to a high definition multimedia interface (HDMI).

33. The computer readable medium of claim 23, wherein a housing having a housing interface is configured to interface with the mobile terminal device, and wherein the housing provides the converted video signal to the alternative display terminal through the HDMI;

wherein the converted signal is encoded according to a high definition multimedia interface (HDMI) requirement.

34. The computer readable medium of claim 33, wherein at least a portion of said processing the video signal occurs in the housing.

35. The computer readable medium of claim 33, the mobile terminal device receives power through the housing interface.

36. The computer readable medium of claim 21, wherein the conversion device resides in a housing of the alternative display terminal.

37. The computer readable medium of claim 23, wherein the video signal received by the conversion device is part of a multimedia signal that is originally received by the mobile terminal device before it is received by the conversion device from the mobile terminal device;

wherein the converted signal is encoded according to a high definition multimedia interface (HDMI) requirement.

38. The computer readable medium of claim 23, wherein the mobile terminal device receives power through a connection to the alternative display.

39. The computer readable medium of claim 23, wherein the conversion device provides power for the cellular phone for receiving and processing the video signal.

40. The computer readable medium of claim 22, wherein the wireless network communication includes a wireless local area network communication.

41. An apparatus for converting video signals, the apparatus comprising:

an input interface for receiving a video signal from a mobile terminal device;

a processing unit for processing the video signal to produce a converted video signal for use by an alternative display terminal, wherein the processing includes converting a signal format to a different format for output to the alternative display terminal, and the converted video signal produced by the processing unit comprises a high definition television (HDTV) digital signal; and

an output interface for providing the converted video signal to the alternative display terminal through a high definition multimedia interface (HDMI) to accommodate displaying the video content by the alternative display terminal.

42. The apparatus of claim 41, wherein the converted signal is encoded according to a high definition multimedia interface (HDMI) requirement by the processing unit.

43. The apparatus of claim 41, wherein the mobile terminal device is a cellular phone or a personal digital assistant.

44. The apparatus of claim 41, wherein the video signal is received from a wireless communication network.

45. The apparatus of claim 44, wherein the wireless communication network is a cellular communication network.

46. The apparatus of claim 42, wherein the processing unit resides in a mobile terminal device.

47. The apparatus of claim 43, wherein the apparatus comprises multiple hardware components for carrying out said processing of the video signal;

wherein the converted signal being encoded according to a high definition multimedia interface (HDMI) requirement.

48. The apparatus of claim 47, wherein receiving the video signal, processing the video signal to the converted video signal, and providing the converted video signal to the alternative display terminal are performed using power from a source that differs from the internal power supply of the mobile terminal device.

49. The apparatus of claim 41, wherein the mobile terminal device provides the video signal to a housing through a housing interface, such that said receiving of the video signal is through the housing interface of the housing.

50. The apparatus of claim 49, wherein the mobile terminal device receives power through the housing interface.

51. The apparatus of claim 43, wherein the video signal received by the processing unit is part of a multimedia signal that is originally received by the mobile terminal device before it is received by the processing unit from the mobile terminal device;

wherein the converted signal is encoded according to a high definition multimedia interface (HDMI) requirement.

52. The apparatus of claim 48, wherein at least one hardware component resides in an intermediary device between the mobile terminal device and the alternative display terminal;

wherein the converted signal from the intermediary device is encoded according to a high definition multimedia interface (HDMI) requirement.

53. The apparatus of claim 43, wherein a housing having a housing interface is configured to interface with the mobile terminal device, and wherein the housing provides the converted video signal to the alternative display terminal through the HDMI;

wherein the converted signal is encoded according to a high definition multimedia interface (HDMI) requirement.

54. The apparatus of claim 53, wherein at least a portion of said processing the video signal occurs in the housing.

55. The apparatus of claim 53, wherein the mobile terminal device receives power through the housing interface.

56. The apparatus of claim 43, wherein the mobile terminal device receives power through a connection to the alternative display.

57. The apparatus of claim 41, wherein said processing comprises setting the converted video signal to have a power level to accommodate providing the converted video signal to the alternative display through the HDMI.

58. The apparatus of claim 42, wherein the wireless network communication includes a wireless local area network communication.

59. The apparatus of claim 48, wherein the power is received through the external display.
