1. A method for communication, the method comprising:

  • generating one or more ternary encoded bitstreams, wherein said generating comprises mapping 3-bit binary IDLE patterns having a least significant bit of zero to a non-zero ternary value; and

    transmitting said generated one or more ternary encoded bitstreams over one or more physical channels;

    wherein said generating and said transmitting are performed by an Ethernet PHY that is configurable into at least two modes of operation, wherein;

    while operating in a first mode of operation, said Ethernet PHY communicates in accordance with 10BASE-T, 100BASE-T, 1000BASE-T, or 10 GBASE-T standards; and

    while operating in a second mode of operation, said Ethernet PHY performs said generating and said transmitting of said one or more ternary encoded bitstreams.
