1. A method of controlling a plurality of lighting elements, comprising:
- assigning an address to a lighting element;
capturing an image of the lighting element during simultaneous emission of light by at least two of the lighting elements;
detecting a spatial location of the lighting element assigned to the address based on the image information;
determining the spatial location of the lighting element based on a pattern of addresses which causes the lighting element to emit light and a sequence of images including the image of the lighting element; and
selectively controlling the lighting elements based on a display request.

26. An apparatus for controlling lighting elements
comprising: -
a controller powered by an AC or DC power source, determining an address, a spatial location and an illumination control function associated with a lighting element based on an image of the lighting element during simultaneous emission of light by at least two of the lighting elements and detecting the spatial location of the lighting element assigned to the address based on the image information and determining the spatial location of the lighting element based on a sequence of images including the image of the lighting element, which sequence of images are acquired while a calibration sequence which comprises a pattern of address which causes the lighting element to emit light is executed, executing the calibration sequence which simultaneously emit light from a plurality of lighting elements for a time interval based on a clock rate; a fixture comprising; a plurality of lighting elements enabled to be controlled by the controller and located at varying locations determined by a user; and an image acquisition device obtaining the images of the visual element based on a frequency uncorrelated to the clock rate.
