1. A computer-implemented method, comprising:
- receiving, using one or more processing units, a selection of a plurality of data items associated with one or more applications in a file system, wherein a data item has an associated icon, and wherein the selection of a plurality of data items includes one or more files, one or more folders, or one or more applications;
invoking, using the one or more processing units, a selected data item, wherein invoking the selected data item causes a menu to be displayed;
displaying the menu, wherein the menu is displayed using the one or more processing units, and wherein the menu includes a plurality of options;
receiving, using the one or more processing units, a selection of an option displayed in the menu; and
performing, using the one or more processing units, a single operation corresponding to the selected option, wherein performing the single operation both generates a new folder and associates the plurality of selected data items with the new folder.

Abstract
Systems and methods for managing data, such as metadata. In one exemplary method, metadata from files created by several different software applications are captured, and the captured metadata is searched. The type of information in metadata for one type of file differs from the type of information in metadata for another type of file. Other methods are described and data processing systems and machine readable media are also described.
