An environmental monitoring system comprising at least one underwater environmental measurement device and a transmitter for transmitting data from the measurement device in water to a receiver at a control site using low frequency electromagnetic and/or magnetic signals, and/or a receiver for receiving data and/or commands from a transmitter at the control site using low frequency electromagnetic and/or magnetic signals, wherein the transmitter and receiver include a magnetically coupled antenna the system further comprising a processor operable to assess parameters measured by the measuring device in relation to predetermined threshold levels.
