1. A method executed by a game platform for a rhythm-action video game comprising:

  • sending to a display a lane divided into a plurality of sub-lanes where at least three of the plurality of sub-lanes are each configured to include a sub-lane cue to indicate corresponding and distinct sub-lane input actions that are expected from a controller coupled to the game platform; and

    sending to the display a spanning cue spanning across the at least a portion of three of the plurality of the sub-lanes, the spanning cue indicating an input action is to be performed by the controller that is different from the corresponding and distinct sub-lane input actions associated with the plurality of sub-lanes, wherein the spanning cue is larger than the sub-lane cue.
