Coaxial catheter instruments for ablation with radiant energy
First Claim
1. A method of ablating cardiac tissue, comprising:
- delivering a distal end of an ablation catheter to a target area within a patient'"'"'s heart;
expanding an expandable member coupled to the distal end of the ablation catheter, a distal end of the expandable member configured to be positioned adjacent the target area thereby defining a treatment area between the expandable member and the target area;
dispensing an irrigation fluid into the treatment area thereby displacing blood from the treatment area; and
ablating a tissue of the treatment area;
wherein the irrigation fluid further comprises an adjuvant.

Abstract
A cardiac ablation instrument capable of removing blood from a treatment area is provided. The instrument includes a catheter configured to deliver a distal end thereof to a patient'"'"'s heart. The instrument can also include an expandable element coupled to the distal end of the catheter wherein the expandable member is configured to be positioned adjacent a target area thereby defining a treatment area between the expandable member and the target area. Further, the instrument can include an irrigation mechanism configured to dispense an irrigation fluid from the catheter thereby displacing blood from the treatment area. Additionally, the instrument includes an energy emitter configured to deliver energy to tissue within the treatment area. The instrument can also include a contact sensor configured to determine the presence of such blood within the treatment area. Methods for ablating tissue are also provided.

17. A method of ablating cardiac tissue, comprising:
-
delivering a distal end of an ablation instrument to a target area within a patient'"'"'s heart, the ablation instrument including a first elongate catheter and a second elongate catheter that is slidably disposed within an inner lumen of the first elongate catheter; expanding a first expandable member that is coupled to the second elongate catheter to anchor the instrument at the target area; expanding a second expandable member coupled to the first elongate catheter, wherein a distal end of the second expandable member is configured to be positioned adjacent the target area thereby defining a treatment area between the second expandable member and the target area; dispensing an irrigation fluid into the treatment area thereby displacing blood from the treatment area, the irrigation fluid being dispensed through a first port formed in at least the second elongate catheter at a location outside of the second expandable member and open to an exterior of the instrument for dispensing the irrigation fluid to the treatment area; and ablating a tissue of the treatment area. - View Dependent Claims (18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26)
