Abstract

A graft fixation device combination. The device is useful for affixing a tissue graft to a bone or other body surface. The combination has a fixation device having two implantation members connected by a connecting member. The implantation members have longitudinal passageways therethrough. The combination also has an insertion member in engagement with the distal end of each implantation member.

Claims

1. A graft fixation device comprising:

a bioabsorbable matrix;

an implantation member passing through the bioabsorbable matrix for receipt within the bone, said implantation member having a longitudinal axis, a proximal end, a distal end, an outer surface, and a longitudinal passage therethrough; and

at least one graft retention member, the retention member having a first section extending from the proximal end of the implantation member, and a second section angulated with respect to first section and engaged against the bioabsorbable matrix whereby to trap the bioabsorbable matrix between the second section and the bone.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the implantation member has a series of ridges extending from the outer surface.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein the retention member comprises a rod member.

4. The device of claim 3, wherein the retention member has an oval cross-section.

5. The device of claim 1, additionally comprising a frustoconical insertion member extending from the distal end of the implantation member, said insertion member having a proximal end, a distal end and an axial passage therethrough.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein the implantation member has a cylindrical configuration.

7. The device of claim 5 wherein the insertion member comprises a bioabsorbable material selected from the group consisting of polylactic acid.

8. The device of claim 1 wherein the implantation member is implanted in the bone and the matrix is held against the bone via the retention member.

The device of claim 1 wherein the first section has a substantially smaller cross-section than a cross-section of the implantation member and extends from the proximal end of the implantation member substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis and the second section extends from the first section substantially normal to the longitudinal axis.

10. The device of claim 9 wherein the first section and second sections are substantially rigid.

11. The device of claim 1 and further comprising a second graft retention member, the second graft retention member having a second retention member first section extending from the proximal end of the implantation member, and a second retention member second section angulated with respect to first section for engaging a graft.

The device of claim 11 wherein each of the first section and the second retention member first section extend from the proximal end of the implantation member substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis and wherein each of the second section and second retention member second sections extend from and substantially normal to the first section and second retention member first section respectively.
