Abstract

A lighting fixture system for fluorescent lamps includes one or more fluorescent lamps and one or more ballasts configured to provide controlled power to the one or more fluorescent lamps. The lighting fixture further includes a controller wired to the fluorescent lighting fixture. The controller includes one or more relays configured to turn power provided to the one or more ballasts on and off such that the one or more fluorescent lamps turn on and off with the switching of the one or more relays. The controller further includes a logic circuit configured to control the switching of the one or more relays, wherein the logic circuit is configured to log usage information for the fluorescent lighting fixture in memory. The controller yet further includes communications electronics configured to output the logged usage information.

Claims

1. A lighting fixture system for fluorescent lamps comprising:

one or more fluorescent lamps;

one or more ballasts configured to provide controlled power to the one or more fluorescent lamps;

a controller wired to the fluorescent lighting fixture, the controller comprising;

one or more relays configured to turn power provided to the one or more ballasts on and off such that the one or more fluorescent lamps turn on and off with the switching of the one or more relays;

a logic circuit configured to control the switching of the one or more relays, wherein the logic circuit is configured to log usage information for multiple on and off sessions of the fluorescent lighting fixture in memory; and

communications electronics configured to output the logged usage information.

2. The lighting fixture system of claim 1, wherein the controller is further configured to include a sensor and the logic circuit is configured to control the switching of the one or more relays based on inputs received from the sensor.

3. The lighting fixture system of claim 2, wherein the sensor is a motion sensor.

4. The lighting fixture system of claim 3, wherein the logic circuit is configured to discontinue the switching based on inputs received from the sensor by analyzing the behavior of at least one of the sensor, the switching, and a logged usage information.

5. The lighting fixture system of claim 3, wherein the logic circuit is configured to discontinue the switching based on a determination that switching based on the inputs from the sensor has occurred too frequently.

6. A system for controlling lighting in a building, the system comprising:

a plurality of lighting fixtures coupled to electronics configured to control local on/off switching of ballasts for the plurality of lighting fixtures;

wherein the electronics are configured to log usage information for multiple on and off session of the multiple on and off sessions of plurality of lighting fixtures and wherein the electronics retain a zone identifier for an associated lighting fixture from the plurality of lighting fixtures;

a computing system configured to receive the usage information from the plurality of lighting fixtures and to calculate energy use information for the plurality of lighting fixture by aggregating the usage information for the plurality of lighting fixtures;

wherein the computing system is further configured to cause the calculated energy use information to be displayed on an electronic display in communication with the computing system.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein the computing system is configured to generate graphical user interfaces for controlling the plurality of lighting fixtures via a touch screen interface.

8. The system of claim 7, wherein the graphical user interface is configured to include a user control configured to override previous settings for the plurality of lighting fixtures.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein the computing system is configured to use input received at the touch screen interface to configure settings for the plurality of lighting fixtures.

10. A device for controlling a fluorescent lighting fixture, comprising:

a control circuit configured to cause one or more lamps of the fluorescent lighting fixture to turn on and off;

a sensor;

a logic circuit configured to receive a signal from the sensor and to use the signal to determine whether the control circuit should change states, wherein the logic circuit is further configured to log usage information for multiple on and off sessions of for the lighting fixture;

a radio frequency transceiver configured to transmit the logged usage information and to receive commands via radio frequency communications;

wherein the control circuit is further configured to cause the one or more lamps of the fluorescent lighting fixture to turn on and off based on the received commands.

11. The device of claim 10, wherein the sensor is at least one of an infrared sensor and an optical sensor.

12. The device of claim 10, wherein the logic circuit is configured to use the signal from the sensor to detect motion and determines whether the control circuit should change states based on whether motion is detected.

13. The device of claim 12, wherein the logic circuit is configured to use the signal from the sensor to determine an ambient lighting level.

14. The device of claim 13, wherein the logic circuit is further configured to determine whether the control circuit should change states based on the ambient lighting level.

15. The device of claim 14, wherein the logic circuit is configured to provide commands to the control circuit, wherein the control circuit is further configured to cause the one or more lamps of the fluorescent lighting fixture to turn on and off based on the commands received from the logic circuit.

The device of claim 15, wherein the logic circuit is configured to provide a command to the control circuit configured to cause the control circuit to turn the one or more lamps of the fluorescent lighting fixture on when the logic circuit detects motion via the signal from the sensor and when the logic circuit determines that the ambient lighting level is below a threshold setpoint.

17. The device of claim 16, wherein the logic circuit is further configured to prevent on/off cycling of the one or more lamps of the fluorescent lighting fixture by holding the lamp in an “

on”

state for a predefined period of time after the condition that caused the lamp to turn is no longer true.

18. The device of claim 17, wherein the logic circuit is further configured to include a restrike violation module configured to prevent the logic circuit from commanding the control circuit to cause the one or more fluorescent lamps to turn on while a restrike time is counted down.

19. The device of claim 10, wherein the logic circuit is further configured to cause the radio frequency transceiver to transmit commands to other radio frequency transceivers coupled to other fluorescent lighting fixtures.

20. The device of claim 19, wherein the logic circuit is further configured to cause the radio frequency transceiver to transmit an indication that motion was detected by the sensor.

21. The device of claim 10, wherein the logic circuit is further configured to interpret a signal received at the radio frequency transceiver as indicating that motion was detected by another device;

and wherein the logic circuit is configured to relay the signal to other devices using the radio frequency transceiver.

22. The device of claim 21, wherein the logic circuit is configured to store a lighting zone value in memory;

and

wherein the logic circuit is further configured to cause the control circuit to turn the one or more lamps of the fluorescent lighting fixture on when the logic circuit determines that the another device is associated with a lighting zone that corresponds to the lighting zone value stored in memory.

23. The device of claim 22, wherein the logic circuit includes data representative of the lighting zone value with its indication that motion was detected by the sensor when causing the radio frequency transmitter to transmit the indication.

24. The device of claim 22, wherein the logic circuit includes data representative of the lighting zone value with the commands the logic circuit causes to be transmitted to other radio frequency transceivers.

25. The device of claim 10, further comprising:

a housing that surrounds the control circuit, the logic, and the radio frequency transceiver; and

wherein the motion sensor is coupled to the housing.

26. The device of claim 10, wherein the control circuit comprises a relay configured to restrict power supplied to a ballast for the one or more lamps of the fluorescent lighting fixture.

27. The device of claim 10, wherein the log of usage information for the lighting device comprises an event identifier and a timestamp.

28. The device of claim 10, wherein the radio frequency transceiver is further configured to provide wireless control signals to a remotely located radio frequency receiver of a controller for controllably providing and restricting power to facility equipment.

29. The device of claim 28, wherein the facility equipment includes at least one of workstation components, security components, advertising components, and electronic displays.

The device of claim 10, wherein at least one of the control circuit and the logic circuit is operable to monitor the number of the commands based on signals from the sensor and to prevent operation of the fluorescent lighting fixture based on the signals from the sensor when the number of commands based on signals from the sensor exceeds a predetermined limit within a predetermined time period.

31. The device of claim 30, wherein at least one of the control circuit and the logic circuit provides a message that a control scheme based upon the sensor has been disabled.

The device of claim 30, wherein at least one of the control circuit and the logic circuit is configured to adjust the predetermined time period to a different time period to prevent the number of commands based on signals from the sensor from exceeding the predetermined limited within the different time period.

33. A system for variably controlling an artificial light level in response to changing ambient light level to maintain a desired light level substantially constant in an area, comprising:

a plurality of lighting zones within the area,

a plurality of fluorescent fixtures in each of the lighting zones;

a wireless transceiver associated with each fluorescent fixture;

a sensor configured to provide a signal representative of an ambient light level;

a controller configured to receive a signal representative of a first ambient light level from the sensor and compare the signal to a setpoint representative of the desired light level, and to provide a first control signal to the wireless transceivers for a first group of the fluorescent fixtures in a first subset of lighting zones to change the artificial light level a first amount;

the controller also configured to receive a signal representative of a second ambient light level from the sensor and compare the signal to the setpoint representative of the desired light level, and to provide a second control signal to the wireless transceivers for a second group of the fluorescent fixtures in a second subset of lighting zones to change the artificial light level a second amount the controller also configured to log usage information for multiple on and off sessions of the plurality of fluorescent fixtures.

The system of claim 33 wherein the fluorescent fixtures include one or more ballasts, and the wireless transceiver is configured to receive a control signal and communicate instructions for operation of the ballasts in at least one of three modes of operation for each fluorescent fixture including a full-on mode, a full-off mode and an intermediate mode.

The system of claim 34 wherein the number of lighting zones =n, and the number of fluorescent fixtures in each of the lighting zones =m, and the number of modes of operation of each fluorescent fixture equals at least three, so that the controller is operable to maintain a desired light level substantially constant in the area by iteratively adjusting the artificial light level by at least (3×

n×

m) iterations in response to signals from the sensor that are representative of the changing ambient light level.

36. The system of claim 34 wherein the one or more ballasts include a first ballast and a second ballast, and during the intermediate mode the first ballast is energized and the second ballast is deenergized.

37. The system of claim 33 wherein the controller includes a user interface configured to permit the setpoint for the desired lighting level to be selectively adjustable.

38. The system of claim 36 wherein the user interface is operable to permit the lighting zones to be reconfigured by reassigning one or more of the fluorescent fixtures from a first lighting zone to a second lighting zone.

39. The system of claim 33 wherein lighting zones in the area are disposed within a facility.
