Abstract

A method for conducting an operation including a power tool battery pack. The battery pack can include a housing, a first cell supported by the housing and having a voltage, and a second cell supported by the housing and having a voltage. The battery pack also can be connectable to a power tool and be operable to supply power to operate the power tool. The method can include discharging one of the first cell and the second cell until the voltage of the one of the first cell and the second cell is substantially equal to the voltage of the other of the first cell and the second cell.

Claims

1. A battery pack comprising:

a housing connectable to and supportable by a hand held power tool;

a plurality of battery cells supported by the housing, the battery cells having a lithium-based chemistry, each of the plurality of battery cells being cylindrical and having a cell diameter and a cell length, the cell length being at least twice the cell diameter;

first and second terminals for electrically connecting the battery pack to the hand held power tool; and

a circuit configured to monitor at least one parameter of the battery pack and control a discharge of the battery cells to produce a discharge current from the battery cells,

wherein an average of the discharge current produced by the battery cells is greater than or equal to approximately 20 amps.

2. The battery pack of claim 1, wherein the lithium-based chemistry includes manganese.

3. The battery pack of claim 1, wherein the battery cells have a spinel chemistry.

4. The battery pack of claim 1, wherein the plurality of battery cells includes five battery cells.

5. The battery pack of claim 1, wherein each of the plurality of battery cells has a nominal voltage of approximately 3.6 volts.

6. The battery pack of claim 1, wherein each of the plurality of battery cells has an ampere-hour capacity of approximately 3.0 ampere-hours.

7. The battery pack of claim 1, further comprising a protection circuit configured to protect at least one component of the battery pack.

8. The battery pack of claim 1, wherein the circuit is configured to control a field-effect transistor (“

FET”

) to control the discharge of the battery cells.

9. The battery pack of claim 8, wherein the FET is within the housing.

10. A hand held power tool operable for use with the battery pack of claim 1.

11. The battery pack of claim 1, wherein the circuit includes a microprocessor.

12. An electrical combination comprising:

a hand held power tool;

a battery pack for supplying power to the hand held power tool, the battery pack including

a housing connectable to and supportable by the hand held power tool, and

a plurality of battery cells supported by the housing, the battery cells having a lithium-based chemistry, each of the plurality of battery cells being cylindrical and having a cell diameter and a cell length, the cell length being at least twice the cell diameter;

first and second terminals for electrically connecting the battery pack and the hand held power tool; and

a circuit configured to monitor at least one parameter of the battery pack, to control a discharge of the battery cells to produce a discharge current from the battery cells, and to supply the discharge current to the hand held power tool,

wherein an average of the discharge current produced by the battery cells is greater than or equal to approximately 20 amps.

13. The combination of claim 12, wherein the lithium-based chemistry includes manganese.

14. The combination of claim 12, wherein the battery cells have a spinel chemistry.

15. The combination of claim 12, wherein each of the plurality of battery cells has a nominal voltage of approximately 3.6 volts.

16. The combination of claim 12, wherein each of the plurality of battery cells has an ampere-hour capacity of approximately 3.0 ampere-hours.

17. The combination of claim 12, further comprising a protection circuit configured to protect at least one component of the battery pack.

18. The combination of claim 12, wherein the circuit is configured to control a field-effect transistor (“

FET”

) to control the discharge of the battery cells.

19. The combination of claim 18, wherein the FET is within the housing.

20. The combination of claim 12, wherein the circuit includes a microprocessor.

21. The combination of claim 20, wherein the microprocessor is within the housing.
