Abstract

Modelocked fiber laser resonators may be coupled with optical amplifiers. An isolator optionally may separate the resonator from the amplifier. A reflective optical element on one end of the resonator having a relatively low reflectivity may be employed to couple light from the resonator to the amplifier. Enhanced pulse-width control may be provided with concatenated sections of both polarization-maintaining and non-polarization-maintaining fibers. Apodized fiber Bragg gratings and integrated fiber polarizers may also be included in the laser cavity to assist in linearly polarizing the output of the cavity. Very short pulses with a large optical bandwidth may be obtained by matching the dispersion value of the grating to the inverse of the dispersion of the intra-cavity fiber. Frequency comb sources may be constructed from such modelocked fiber oscillators. Low dispersion and an in-line interferometer that provides feedback may assist in controlling the frequency components output from the comb source.

Claims

1. A frequency comb source comprising:

a mode-locked fiber oscillator comprising an optical fiber disposed in an optical cavity that supports a plurality of optical modes, said mode-locked fiber oscillator mode-locking said optical modes to produce optical pulses and frequency components having a repetition frequency, f_rep, and a carrier envelope offset frequency, _fceo, wherein said optical cavity of said modelocked fiber laser is configured with sufficiently low cavity dispersion such that a carrier envelope offset frequency beat signal (f_ceo beat signal) having a frequency bandwidth smaller than approximately 200 kHz is obtainable from said frequency comb source; and

an optical pump configured to pump said mode-locked fiber oscillator.

2. The frequency comb source of claim 1, further comprising:

a non-linear optical element positioned to receive said optical pulses, said non-linear optical element having sufficient optical non-linearity to generate additional frequency components that together with said frequency components output by said mode-locked oscillator form a first set of frequencies separated by said frequency spacing, f_rep, and offset from a reference frequency by said carrier envelope frequency offset, f_ceo;

an interferometer optically coupled to receive said first set of frequencies, said interferometer comprising a frequency shifter that receives said first set of frequencies and generates a second set of frequencies from said first set of frequencies, said second set of frequencies interfering with at least a portion of said first set of frequencies to produce beat frequencies; and

an optical detector optically receiving said beat frequencies, said optical detector having an output configured to output said beat frequencies and said f_ceo beat signal.

3. The frequency comb source of claim 2, wherein said non-linear element comprises a highly nonlinear optical fiber.

4. The frequency comb source of claim 3, wherein said highly nonlinear optical fiber is configured with dispersion per unit length in a range from −

5000 fs²/m to +2000 fs²/m.

5. The frequency comb source of claim 2, further comprising a fiber amplifier disposed between said mode-locked fiber oscillator and said non-linear optical element.

The frequency comb source of claim 1, further comprising a feedback system connected to said mode-locked fiber oscillator to control said carrier envelope offset frequency, f_ceo, based on said f_ceo beat signal, the feedback system comprising at least one phase lock loop configured to compare said f_ceo beat signal with one or more reference frequencies.

7. The frequency comb source of claim 6, further comprising a transducer configured to perturb said mode-locked fiber oscillator in response to feedback from said feedback system to alter said carrier envelope offset frequency, f_ceo.

The frequency comb source of claim 1, further comprising a feedback system connected to said mode-locked fiber oscillator to control the repetition frequency, f_rep, the feedback system comprising at least one phase lock loop configured to stabilize said repetition frequency, f_rep, of said oscillator by comparing said repetition frequency to a reference frequency.

9. The frequency comb source of claim 8, further comprising a transducer configured to perturb said mode-locked fiber oscillator in response to feedback from said feedback system to alter the repetition frequency, f_rep.

10. The frequency comb source of claim 8, further comprising an optical coupler configured to couple output from said oscillator to measure said repetition frequency, f_rep, said feedback system configured to adjust said oscillator based on said measured f_rep.

11. The frequency comb source of claim 1, wherein said optical pump is selectively adjustable to control the offset frequency, f_ceo.

12. The frequency comb source of claim 1, wherein said mode-locked fiber oscillator comprises a bandpass filter.

13. The frequency comb source of claim 1, wherein said mode-locked fiber oscillator comprises a plurality of intra-cavity fibers having different dispersion characteristics.

14. The frequency comb source of claim 1, wherein the total absolute cavity dispersion is smaller than approximately (10,000 fs²/m)×

L, where the optical fiber disposed in the optical cavity has a length L.

15. The frequency comb source of claim 2, wherein said non-linear optical element generates a supercontinuum, and a frequency converter is arranged to receive said supercontinuum.

16. The frequency comb source of claim 15, wherein said frequency converter comprises a non-linear waveguide arranged to frequency convert a long wavelength portion of said supercontinuum in such a way as to interfere with a non-converted short wavelength portion of said supercontinuum.

17. The frequency comb source of claim 16, wherein said non-linear waveguide comprises a periodically poled crystal having a periodically poled grating section to frequency convert said long wavelength portion of said supercontinuum.

18. The frequency comb source of claim 2, wherein said mode-locked fiber oscillator, said non-linear optical element, and said interferometer are arranged in an in-line configuration.

The frequency comb source of claim 1, further comprising a feedback system connected to said mode-locked fiber oscillator to control said carrier envelope offset frequency, f_ceo, wherein said optical pump comprises at least one pump diode, and said feedback system comprises an element configured to control a pump current of said pump diode in response to a feedback signal representative of said f_ceo beat signal.

The frequency comb source of claim 1, further comprising a feedback system connected to said mode-locked fiber oscillator to control said carrier envelope offset frequency, _fceo, wherein said oscillator comprises a fiber grating, and said feedback system comprises an element to control a temperature of said fiber grating in response to a feedback signal representative of said f_ceo beat signal.
