1. A method of forming a self-retaining suture comprising:
- providing an elongated body having an outer circumference;
forming a tissue retainer by deforming the elongated body such that the tissue retainer protrudes outward from the outer circumference of the elongated body, wherein the step of forming a tissue retainer forms a fin connecting said tissue retainer and said elongated body; and
cutting a region of said fin so as to leave a first fin portion located between the cut region and the elongated body and a second fin portion located between the cut region and the retainer.

Abstract
In embodiments of the invention, a manufacturing process produces and an. Article produced has a self-retaining suture wherein a force is used to squeeze the suture causing retainers to form out of material from the suture body. In an embodiment of the invention, fins are formed between the retainers and the suture body, wherein said fins support the retainers. In another embodiment, retainer stops are provided in order to prevent the retainer from settling back in the body of the suture.

5. A method of forming a self-retaining suture comprising:
-
extruding an elongated body having an outer circumference; applying pressure to one or more local areas to deform the elongated body such that one or more tissue retainers are formed;
wherein the tissue retainers protrude outward from the outer circumference at the one or more local areas, wherein the step of applying pressure forms a fin connecting each of said one or more tissue retainers and said elongated body; andcutting a region of said fin so as to leave a first fin portion located between the cut region and the elongated body and a second fin portion located between the cut region and each of the one or more tissue retainers. - View Dependent Claims (6, 7, 8)
