Abstract

A method for monitoring feedback loop stability in a wireless repeater includes measuring a gain control metric in the feedback loop of the repeater periodically for a given time period where the gain control metric is indicative of a loop gain of the feedback loop of the repeater; and monitoring the magnitude of the gain control metric to determine the stability of the feedback loop of the repeater. In operation, a large magnitude of the gain control metric indicates instability in the feedback loop of the repeater.

Claims

1. A method for monitoring feedback loop stability in a wireless repeater, the method comprising:

receiving an input signal at a receiving antenna of the repeater, the input signal being a sum of a remote signal to be repeated and a feedback signal resulting from a feedback channel between the receiving antenna and a transmitting antenna, the feedback channel thus forming a feedback loop between the transmitting antenna and the receiving antenna;

transmitting an output signal on the transmitting antenna, the output signal being an amplified input signal;

measuring a gain control metric in the feedback loop of the repeater periodically for a given time period, the gain control metric being indicative of a loop gain of the feedback loop of the repeater; and

monitoring the magnitude of the gain control metric to determine the stability of the feedback loop of the repeater, wherein a large magnitude of the gain control metric indicates instability in the feedback loop of the repeater.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

cancelling a feedback signal estimate from the input signal;

wherein measuring a gain control metric in a feedback loop of the repeater periodically for a given time period comprises measuring periodically a residual feedback signal that was not cancelled out for a given time period, the residual feedback signal being indicative of the loop gain of the repeater, wherein a large residual feedback signal is indicative of instability in the feedback loop of the repeater.

The method of claim 1, wherein measuring a gain control metric in a feedback loop of the repeater periodically for a given time period comprises measuring, at any point in the feedback loop of the repeater, the feedback signal in the input signal, the feedback signal being a result of the transmitted signal not being totally blocked by antenna isolation between the receiving and transmitting antennas, wherein a large feedback signal is indicative of instability in the feedback loop of the repeater.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein measuring a gain control metric in a feedback loop of the repeater periodically for a given time period comprises:

computing the gain control metric based on a gain control input signal, the gain control input signal being taken from any point in the feedback loop of the repeater, the gain control metric being indicative of a correlation between the gain control input signal and a delayed version of the gain control input signal; and

measuring the gain control metric based on the gain control input signal periodically for a given time period, wherein a large correlation is indicative of instability in the feedback loop of the repeater.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

controlling a gain of the repeater based on the magnitude of the gain control metric.

6. The method of claim 5, further comprising:

controlling the gain of the repeater so that the loop gain of the repeater is less than 1.

7. The method of claim 5, further comprising:

controlling the gain of the repeater so that the loop gain of the repeater is less than a predetermined value or within a predetermined range.

A wireless repeater having a receiving antenna for receiving an input signal and a transmitting antenna for transmitting an output signal, the input signal being a sum of a remote signal to be repeated and a feedback signal resulting from a feedback channel between the receiving antenna and the transmitting antenna, the feedback channel thus forming a feedback loop between the transmitting antenna and the receiving antenna, the output signal being an amplified input signal, the repeater comprising:

a gain control block configured to control a gain of the repeater, the gain control block comprising a gain metric calculator configured to measure a gain control metric in the feedback loop of the repeater periodically for a given time period, the gain control metric being indicative of a loop gain of the repeater, the gain control metric being monitored to determine the stability of the feedback loop of the repeater, wherein a large magnitude of the gain control metric indicates instability in the feedback loop of the repeater.

9. The wireless repeater of claim 8, further comprising:

an echo canceller configured to cancel a feedback signal estimate from the input signal,

wherein the gain metric calculator is configured to periodically measure a residual feedback signal in the input signal that was not cancelled out for a given time period, the residual feedback signal being indicative of the loop gain of the repeater, wherein a large residual feedback signal is indicative of instability of the feedback loop of the repeater.

The wireless repeater of claim 8, wherein the gain metric calculator is configured to periodically measure the feedback signal in the input signal for a given time period at any point in the feedback loop of the repeater, the feedback signal being a result of the transmitted signal not being totally blocked by antenna isolation between the receiving and transmitting antennas, wherein a large feedback signal is indicative of instability in the feedback loop of the repeater.

The wireless repeater of claim 8, wherein the gain metric calculator is configured to compute the gain control metric based on a gain control input signal, the gain control input signal being taken from any point in the feedback loop of the repeater, the gain control metric being indicative of a correlation between the gain control input signal and a delayed version of the gain control input signal and the gain metric calculator is further configured to measure the gain control metric based on the gain control input signal periodically for a given time period, wherein a large correlation is indicative of instability in the feedback loop of the repeater.

12. The wireless repeater of claim 8, wherein the gain control block further comprising a gain control algorithm block configured to receive the gain control metric and control the gain of the repeater based at least on the magnitude of the gain control metric.

13. The wireless repeater of claim 12, wherein the gain control algorithm block is configured to control the gain of the repeater so that the loop gain of the repeater is less than 1.

14. The wireless repeater of claim 12, wherein the gain control algorithm block is configured to control the gain of the repeater so that the loop gain of the repeater is less than a predetermined value or within a predetermined range.

A wireless repeater having a receiving antenna for receiving an input signal and a transmitting antenna for transmitting an output signal, the input signal being a sum of a remote signal to be repeated and a feedback signal resulting from a feedback channel between the receiving antenna and the transmitting antenna, the feedback channel thus forming a feedback loop between the transmitting antenna and the receiving antenna, the output signal being an amplified input signal, the repeater comprising:

means for controlling a gain of the repeater, the means comprising a means for measuring a gain control metric in the feedback loop of the repeater periodically for a given time period, the gain control metric being indicative of a loop gain of the repeater, the gain control metric being monitored to determine the stability of the feedback loop of the repeater, wherein a large magnitude of the gain control metric indicates instability in the feedback loop of the repeater.
