Abstract

A computer system and method for managing access to a resume database. For each skill or experience-related phrase in a resume, the system computes a term of experience based on an experience range associated with a contextual use of the phrase in the resume. The term of experience for a phrase that occurs multiple times in the resume is the summation of the term of experience for each occurrence of the phrase associated with a different contextual use. The system stores each phrase and the term of experience in a parsed resume. The resume database also stores job descriptions that include required phrases and a required term of experience for each required phrase. The job descriptions also store a required level of education or field of specialization, and a required salary range. A recruiter searches the resume database to find matching resumes that satisfy a job description.

Claims

1. A system for using a computer to generate a resume summary, comprising:

a memory device resident in the computer; and

a processor disposed in communication with the memory device, the processor configured to;

receive a request to generate the resume summary based on a resume stored in a resume database;

select a job description stored in the resume database, the job description including at least one job requirement, each said at least one job requirement including a required skill or experience-related phrase and a required term of experience;

send a database query to the resume database, the database query identifying the resume and the job description;

receive a result set in response to the database query, the result set including the resume, and the resume summary; and

store the resume summary,

wherein the resume includes at least one skill or experience-related phrase,

wherein each skill or experience-related phrase has an experience range determined by examining a use of the skill or experience-related phrase in the resume, and a term of experience based on the experience range,

wherein the term of experience for each skill or experience-related phrase having multiple occurrences in the resume is a summation of the term of experience, or a portion of the term of experience, for each occurrence of the skill or experience-related phrase associated with a different experience range,

wherein the resume database includes a parsed resume associated with the resume,

wherein the parsed resume includes each said at least one skill or experience-related phrase located in the resume, the term of experience for each said at least one skill or experience-related phrase, and a relationship between the term of experience and each said at least one skill or experience-related phrase,

wherein said at least one skill or experience-related phrase includes said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase, or at least one implying phrase for said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase, that satisfies the job description, and

wherein the resume summary includes said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein to receive the request, the processor is further configured to:

select the resume from the resume database.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the processor receives the request from a recruiter.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the processor receives the request from a recruitment team that includes at least one recruitment team member.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the database query includes a reference to the resume and a reference to the job description.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein to satisfy the job description, the resume includes, for each said at least one job requirement, the required skill or experience-related phrase, or at least one implying phrase of the required skill or experience-related phrase, and wherein the term of experience for the required skill or experience-related phrase, or said at least one implying phrase of the required skill or experience-related phrase, is greater than or equal to the required term of experience.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein the term of experience is rounded down to a unit of time.

8. The system of claim 7, wherein the unit of time is a number of seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years, or decades.

9. The system of claim 7, wherein the unit of time is an integer.

10. The system of claim 7, wherein the unit of time is not an integer.

11. The system of claim 6, wherein the required term of experience is rounded up to a unit of time.

The system of claim 1, wherein to satisfy the job description, the resume includes, for at least one of said at least one job requirement, the required skill or experience-related phrase, or at least one implying phrase of the required skill or experience-related phrase, and wherein the term of experience for the required skill or experience-related phrase, or said at least one implying phrase of the required skill or experience-related phrase, is greater than or equal to the required term of experience.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the term of experience is rounded down to a unit of time.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein the unit of time is a number of seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years, or decades.

25. The system of claim 24, wherein the term of experience is rounded down to a unit of time.

26. The system of claim 25, wherein the unit of time is a number of seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years, or decades.

33. The system of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to:

send a representation of the resume, the representation including a portion of the resume and the resume summary.

34. The system of claim 33, wherein the processor sends the representation of the resume to a recruiter.

35. The system of claim 33, wherein the processor sends the representation of the resume to a recruitment team that includes at least one recruitment team member.

36. The system of claim 33, wherein the portion of the resume includes educational background data, summary information for an employer or a project, or a prior job title.

37. The system of claim 33, wherein the resume summary includes at least one occurrence of each said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase, or each said at least one implying phrase for said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase, and wherein the processor is further configured to:

mark each said at least one occurrence of each said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase, or each said at least one implying phrase for said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase.

38. The system of claim 37, wherein the processor is further configured to:

display the representation on a display screen.

39. The system of claim 38, wherein the marking includes highlighting each said at least one occurrence of each said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase, or each said at least one implying phrase for said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase, or displaying in reverse video each said at least one occurrence of each said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase, or each said at least one implying phrase for said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase.

40. The system of claim 33, wherein the processor sends the representation of the resume to a hiring manager.

41. The system of claim 40, wherein the processor is further configured to:

authorize the sending of the representation to the hiring manager.

42. The system of claim 41, wherein a recruiter authorizes the sending of the representation to the hiring manager.

43. The system of claim 33, wherein a reference to the representation is sent to a recruiter.

44. A method for using a computer to generate a resume summary, comprising:

receiving a request to generate the resume summary based on a resume stored in a resume database;

selecting a job description stored in the resume database, the job description including at least one job requirement, each said at least one job requirement including a required skill or experience-related phrase and a required term of experience;

sending a database query to the resume database, the database query identifying the resume and the job description;

receiving a result set in response to the database query, the result set including the resume, and the resume summary; and

storing the resume summary,

wherein the resume includes at least one skill or experience-related phrase,

wherein each skill or experience-related phrase has an experience range determined by examining a use of the skill or experience-related phrase in the resume, and a term of experience based on the experience range,

wherein the term of experience for each skill or experience-related phrase having multiple occurrences in the resume is a summation of the term of experience, or a portion of the term of experience, for each occurrence of the skill or experience-related phrase associated with a different experience range,

wherein the resume database includes a parsed resume associated with the resume,

wherein the parsed resume includes each said at least one skill or experience-related phrase located in the resume, the term of experience for each said at least one skill or experience-related phrase, and a relationship between the term of experience and each said at least one skill or experience-related phrase,

wherein said at least one skill or experience-related phrase includes said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase, or at least one implying phrase for said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase, that satisfies the job description, and

wherein the resume summary includes said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase.

45. The method of claim 44, wherein the receiving of the request further comprises:

selecting the resume from the resume database.

46. The method of claim 44, wherein the receiving of the request is from a recruiter.

47. The method of claim 44, wherein the receiving of the request is from a recruitment team that includes at least one recruitment team member.

48. The method of claim 44, wherein the database query includes a reference to the resume and a reference to the job description.

49. The method of claim 44, wherein to satisfy the job description, the resume includes, for each said at least one job requirement, the required skill or experience-related phrase, or at least one implying phrase of the required skill or experience-related phrase, and wherein the term of experience for the required skill or experience-related phrase, or said at least one implying phrase of the required skill or experience-related phrase, is greater than or equal to the required term of experience.

50. The method of claim 49, wherein the term of experience is rounded down to a unit of time.

51. The method of claim 50, wherein the unit of time is a number of seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years, or decades.

79. The method of claim 76, wherein the portion of the resume includes educational background data, summary information for an employer or a project, or a prior job title.

80. The method of claim 76, wherein the resume summary includes at least one occurrence of each said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase, or each said at least one implying phrase for said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase, and further comprising:

marking each said at least one occurrence of each said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase, or each said at least one implying phrase for said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase.

81. The method of claim 80, further comprising:

displaying the representation on a display screen.

The method of claim 81, wherein the marking includes highlighting each said at least one occurrence of each said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase, or each said at least one implying phrase for said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase, or displaying in reverse video each said at least one occurrence of each said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase, or each said at least one implying phrase for said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase.

83. The method of claim 76, wherein the sending of the representation of the resume is to a hiring manager.

84. The method of claim 83, further comprising:

authorizing the sending of the representation to the hiring manager.

85. The method of claim 84, wherein a recruiter authorizes the sending of the representation to the hiring manager.

86. The method of claim 76, wherein a reference to the representation is sent to a recruiter.

87. A computer program product for using a computer to generate a resume summary, comprising:

a computer readable medium having instructions encoded theron for enabling a processor to perform the operations of;

receiving a request to generate the resume summary based on a resume stored in a resume database;

selecting a job description stored in the resume database, the job description including at least one job requirement, each said at least one job requirement including a required skill or experience-related phrase and a required term of experience;

sending a database query to the resume database, the database query identifying the resume and the job description;

receiving a result set in response to the database query, the result set including the resume, and the resume summary; and

storing the resume summary,

wherein the resume includes at least one skill or experience-related phrase, wherein each skill or experience-related phrase has an experience range, determined by examining a use of the skill or experience-related phrase in the resume, and a term of experience based on the experience range,

wherein the term of experience for each skill or experience-related phrase having multiple occurrences in the resume is a summation of the term of experience, or a portion of the term of experience, for each occurrence of the skill or experience-related phrase associated with a different experience range,

wherein the resume database includes a parsed resume associated with the resume,

wherein the parsed resume includes each said at least one skill or experience-related phrase located in the resume, the term of experience for each said at least one skill or experience-related phrase, and a relationship between the term of experience and each said at least one skill or experience-related phrase,

wherein said at least one skill or experience-related phrase includes said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase, or at least one implying phrase for said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase, that satisfies the job description, and

wherein the resume summary includes said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase.

88. The computer program product of claim 87, wherein the receiving of the request further comprises:

selecting the resume from the resume database.

89. The computer program product of claim 87, wherein the database query includes a reference to the resume and a reference to the job description.

The computer program product of claim 87, wherein to satisfy the job description, the resume includes, for each said at least one job requirement, the required skill or experience-related phrase, or at least one implying phrase of the required skill or experience-related phrase, and wherein the term of experience for the required skill or experience-related phrase, or said at least one implying phrase of the required skill or experience-related phrase, is greater than or equal to the required term of experience.

91. The computer program product of claim 90, wherein the term of experience is rounded down to a unit of time.

110. A system for using a computer to generate a resume summary, comprising:

means for receiving a request to generate the resume summary based on a resume stored in a resume database;

means for selecting a job description stored in the resume database, the job description including at least one job requirement, each said at least one job requirement including a required skill or experience-related phrase and a required term of experience;

means for sending a database query to the resume database, the database query identifying the resume and the job description;

means for receiving a result set in response to the database query, the result set including the resume, and the resume summary; and

means storing the resume summary,

wherein the resume includes at least one skill or experience-related phrase,

wherein each skill or experience-related phrase has an experience range determined by examining a use of the skill or experience-related phrase in the resume, and a term of experience based on the experience range,

wherein the term of experience for each skill or experience-related phrase having multiple occurrences in the resume is a summation of the term of experience, or a portion of the term of experience, for each occurrence of the skill or experience-related phrase associated with a different experience range,

wherein the resume database includes a parsed resume associated with the resume,

wherein the parsed resume includes each said at least one skill or experience-related phrase located in the resume, the term of experience for each said at least one skill or experience-related phrase, and a relationship between the term of experience and each said at least one skill or experience-related phrase,

wherein said at least one skill or experience-related phrase includes said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase, or at least one implying phrase for said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase, that satisfies the job description, and

wherein the resume summary includes said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase.

111. The system of claim 110, wherein the means for receiving the request further comprises:

means for selecting the resume from the resume database.

112. The system of claim 110, wherein the database query includes a reference to the resume and a reference to the job description.

The system of claim 110, wherein to satisfy the job description, the resume includes, for each said at least one job requirement, the required skill or experience-related phrase, or at least one implying phrase of the required skill or experience-related phrase, and wherein the term of experience for the required skill or experience-related phrase, or said at least one implying phrase of the required skill or experience-related phrase, is greater than or equal to the required term of experience.

114. The system of claim 113, wherein the term of experience is rounded down to a unit of time.

means for marking each said at least one occurrence of each said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase, or each said at least one implying phrase for said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase.

127. The system of claim 126, further comprising:

means for displaying the representation on a display screen.

The system of claim 127, wherein the marking includes highlighting each said at least one occurrence of each said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase, or each said at least one implying phrase for said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase, or displaying in reverse video each said at least one occurrence of each said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase, or each said at least one implying phrase for said at least one required skill or experience-related phrase.
