Surgical stapling device for performing circular anastomoses
First Claim
1. A surgical stapling device comprising:
- a handle assembly including an approximation knob and a firing trigger assembly including a firing trigger and a firing link including an extension on the firing link, the firing trigger being movable between an unactuated position and an actuated position;
an elongated body portion extending distally from the handle assembly;
an anvil retainer supported adjacent a distal end of the elongated body portion;
a shell assembly supported on a distal end of the elongated body portion and housing a plurality of staples, the anvil retainer extending through the shell assembly;
an anvil assembly releasably mounted to the anvil retainer;
an approximation mechanism including the approximation knob, a screw operatively associated with the anvil retainer and operable to move the anvil assembly in relation to the shell assembly and a screw stop positioned on the screw; and
a tactile indicator positioned within the handle assembly and being positioned to engage the screw stop, the tactile indicator being movable in response to engagement with the screw stop to provide a tactile indication that the anvil assembly has moved a predetermined distance from the shell assembly after the device has been fired.

Abstract
This application is directed to a surgical stapling device for performing circular anastomoses. The surgical stapling device includes a handle portion, an elongated body portion and a head portion including an anvil assembly and a shell assembly. The handle portion includes a rotatable approximation knob for approximating the anvil and shell assemblies and a firing trigger for actuating a firing mechanism for ejecting staples positioned within the shell assembly. The firing trigger forms one link of a two bar linkage provided to actuate the firing mechanism. The anvil assembly includes a tiltable anvil which will tilt automatically after firing of the device and unapproximating the anvil and shell assemblies. The head portion also includes a retractable trocar assembly which is slidably positioned within an anvil retainer and is automatically advanced and retracted upon attachment and detachment of the anvil assembly onto the anvil retainer, and a lockout tube.
