Abstract

A receiver includes a pre-correlation filter that forms an image of the average chip shape of a received signal over a specified period of time. The filter includes an array of complex accumulation registers that accumulate measurements that are associated with signal samples from specific ranges of locations, or code chip phase angles, along a spread-spectrum chip. Using the accumulated measurements, the receiver estimates the location of the chip transitions in a direct path signal component. The receiver may thereafter change the starting point, size and number of ranges, such that the accumulation registers accumulate more detail from the chip edges. The receiver in addition may compare the accumulated measurements with a reference pulse shape to determine if any interference is present in the received transmission that will distort ranging information calculated from the received signal.

Claims

1. A method of producing measurement pulse shapes associated with code chips of a PRN code in a received signal received by a receiver, the method including the steps of:

over multiple PRN code chips taking measurements that correspond to samples of the received signal that are taken at times that are asynchronous to code rate; and

selectively accumulating the measurements into respective ranges that each span a portion of a code chip that is less than the entire chip, the respective ranges being based on estimated code phase angles of the samples, with a given sample being accumulated in the range that corresponds to the estimated code phase angle of the given sample.

2. The method of claim 1 further including the step of determining an estimated location of the chip edges in a direct path signal that is included in the received signal.

3. The method of claim 2 further including the step of narrowing the ranges that are associated with the chip edges.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of taking measurements includes taking measurements that correspond to inphase samples and quadrature samples.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of accumulating further includes accumulating the measurements to produce one or more early correlation values and one or more late correlation values for use in correlating a local PRN code to the received PRN code and a local carrier to a received carrier.

6. The method of claim 1 further including the step of comparing the accumulated measurements with a predetermined reference shape to detect the presence or absence of interfering signals in the received signals.

7. The method of claim 2 further including the step of changing the starting points of one or more code chip ranges to selectively position the code chip ranges relative to the estimated location of the chip edges.

8. The method of claim 2 further including the step of reducing the number of code chip ranges after the estimated location of the chip edges in the direct path signal is determined.

9. A method of producing measurement pulse shapes associated with code chips of a PRN code in a received signal received by a receiver, the method including the steps of:

over multiple PRN code chips taking measurements that correspond to samples of the received signal that are taken at times that are asynchronous to code rate; and

selectively accumulating the measurements into respective ranges that each span a portion of a code chip that is less than the entire chip and producing respective sums, the assignment of the measurements to the ranges being based on estimated code phase angles of the respective samples, with a given sample being accumulated in the range that corresponds to the estimated code phase angle of the given sample.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the step of accumulating further includes accumulating the measurements to produce one or more early correlation values and one or more late correlation values for use in correlating a local PRN code to the received PRN code and a local carrier to a received carrier.

11. The method of claim 10 further including the step of producing code multipath error signals and carrier multipath error signals based on the accumulated measurements.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the step of producing code and carrier multipath error signals includes combining the code and carrier multipath error signals with code error signals and carrier error signals to produce signals that control a code generator and a carrier generator.

13. The method of claim 9 further including the step of determining an estimated location of the chip edges in a direct path signal that is included in the received signal.

14. The method of claim 13 further including the step of changing the starting points of one or more code chip ranges to selectively position the code chip ranges relative to the estimated location of the chip edges.

15. A method of producing measurement pulse shapes associated with code chips of a PRN code in a signal received by a receiver, the method including the steps of:

over multiple PRN code chips taking measurements that correspond to samples of the received signal the samples of the received signal are taken at times that are asynchronous to code rate;

selectively accumulating the measurements into respective ranges that each span a portion of a code chip that is less than the entire chip and producing respective sums, the assignment of the measurements to the ranges being based on estimated code phase angles of the respective samples, with a given sample being accumulated in the range that corresponds to the estimated code phase angle of the given sample; and

producing the measurement pulse shapes based on the respective sums using all, selected ones or combinations of the respective sums.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein the estimated code phase angles are determined based on the times of the samples relative to the code chips of a locally generated version of the PRN code.

17. The method of claim 16 further including the step of determining an estimated location of the chip edges in a direct path signal that is included in the received signal.

18. The method of claim 16 further including the step of narrowing the ranges that are associated with the estimated location of the chip edges.

19. The method of claim 16 wherein the step of taking measurements includes taking measurements that correspond to inphase samples and quadrature samples.

20. The method of claim 16 wherein the step of accumulating further includes accumulating the measurements to produce one or more early correlation values and one or more late correlation values for use in correlating the locally generated PRN code to the received PRN code and a local carrier to a received carrier.

21. The method of claim 16 further including the step of comparing the accumulated measurements with a predetermined reference shape to detect the presence or absence of interfering signals in the received signals.

22. The method of claim 17 further including the step of changing the starting points of one or more ranges to selectively position the ranges relative to the estimated location of the chip edges.

23. The method of claim 17 further including the step of reducing the number of code chip ranges after the estimated location of the chip edges in the direct path signal is determined.
