Abstract

An ultrasonic transducer having a reduced cost of manufacture. The ultrasonic transducer includes a first insulative retaining layer, a second insulative retaining layer, and a vibrator film layer sandwiched between the first and second retaining layers. The first retaining layer includes a first plurality of apertures formed therethrough, and the second retaining layer includes a second plurality of apertures formed therethrough, in which the second apertures are substantially in registration with the first apertures. The ultrasonic transducer further includes a first cover portion having a plurality of spring/backplate assemblies connected thereto, and a second cover portion. The combination of the first retaining layer, the vibrator film layer, and the second retaining layer is sandwiched between the first and second cover portions of the ultrasonic transducer. The laminated construction of the ultrasonic transducer allows the formation of an array of ultrasonic film transducers using a single piece of ultrasonic vibrator film.

Claims

1. An electro-acoustic transducer, comprising:

a vibrator film;

a plurality of plates;

at least one resilient member operative to urge the respective plates against the vibrator film;

a retainer having a plurality of apertures formed therethrough; and

an electrical conductor operative to provide a drive voltage to the vibrator film,

wherein the vibrator film is disposed between the plurality of plates and the retainer,

wherein each of the plurality of plates is substantially in registration with a respective one of the apertures formed through the retainer, and

wherein the vibrator film is operative to vibrate in response to the drive voltage, thereby generating a series of compression waves at sonic or ultrasonic frequencies.

2. The electro-acoustic transducer of claim 1 wherein the plurality of plates are electrically conductive.

3. The electro-acoustic transducer of claim 1 wherein the vibrator film has at least one electrically conductive side.

4. The electro-acoustic transducer of claim 3 wherein the electrically conductive side of the vibrator film comprises aluminum, gold, or nickel.

5. The electro-acoustic transducer of claim 1 wherein the vibrator film is made of a polymer.

6. The electro-acoustic transducer of claim 5 wherein the polymer is selected from the group consisting of polyester, polyimide, PVDF, PET, and PTFE.

7. The electro-acoustic transducer of claim 1 wherein the vibrator film has a thickness ranging from 0.2 μ

m to 100.0 μ

m.

8. The electro-acoustic transducer of claim 1 further comprising a protective cover disposed on one side of the retainer opposite the vibrator film.

9. The electro-acoustic transducer of claim 8 wherein the protective over is connected to ground potential.

10. The electro-acoustic transducer of claim 8 wherein the protective cover and the vibrator film are spaced apart a predetermined distance sufficient to minimize sonic attenuation due to the protective cover.

11. The electro-acoustic transducer of claim 10 wherein the predetermined distance corresponds to the thickness of the retainer.

12. The electro-acoustic transducer of claim 10 wherein the predetermined distance is about ½

of the wavelength of the sonic or ultrasonic waves.

13. The electro-acoustic transducer of claim 1 wherein the at least one resilient member and the plurality of plates are electrically connected to one another.

14. The electro-acoustic transducer of claim 1:

wherein the vibrator film has at least one electrically conductive side; and

wherein the electrical conductor comprises an electrically conductive strip connected to the electrically conductive side of the vibrator film.

15. The electro-acoustic transducer of claim 14 wherein the electrically conductive strip extends at least halfway across the vibrator film.

16. The electro-acoustic transducer of claim 14 wherein the electrically conductive strip comprises a piece of copper tape.

17. The electro-acoustic transducer of claim 14 further including electrical coupling compound operative to secure the electrically conductive strip to the vibrator film.

18. The electro-acoustic transducer of claim 17 wherein the electrical coupling compound comprises silver paint or conductive epoxy.

19. An electro-acoustic transducer, comprising:

a vibrator film;

a plurality of plates;

at least on resilient member operative to urge the respective plates against the vibrator film;

a retainer disposed between the vibrator film and the plurality of plates, the retainer having a plurality of apertures formed therethrough; and

an electrical conductor operative to provide a drive voltage to the vibrator film,

wherein the plurality of plates are disposed within the plurality of apertures formed through the retainer, and

wherein the vibrator film is operative to vibrate in response to the drive voltage, thereby generating a series of compression waves at sonic or ultrasonic frequencies.
