Abstract

A system for monitoring a heart of a patient, the system includes: (i) a physiological data input interface, operative for receiving signals indicative of cardiac activity of the patient; (ii) a processor configured to process the signals to provide monitoring results; and (iii) an output interface operative to provide the monitoring results; wherein the monitoring results include information indicative of: (a) a heart rate of the patient during a monitoring period; (b) at least one first time period in which the heart rate of the patient exceeded a first threshold; and (c) at least one second time period in which the heart rate of the patient exceeded both the first threshold and a second threshold.

Claims

1. A system for monitoring a heart of a patient, the system comprising:

a physiological data input interface, configured to receive signals indicative of cardiac activity of the patient;

a processor configured to process the signals to provide monitoring results; and

an output interface operative to provide the monitoring results;

wherein the monitoring results comprise information indicative of;

(a) a heart rate of the patient during a monitoring period;

(b) at least one first time period in which the heart rate of the patient exceeded a first threshold; and

(c) at least one second time period in which the heart rate of the patient exceeded both the first threshold and a second threshold;

wherein the processor is configured to provide a first bradycardia indication if the heart rate of the patient was lower than the first threshold for a first bradycardia indicative duration;

provide a second bradycardia indication if the heart rate of the patient was lower than the second threshold, wherein the second threshold is lower than the first threshold and to process the signals to detect heart pauses;

wherein the output interface is further operative to provide a bradycardia indication, and a pause indication; and

wherein the pause indication is indicative of at least one heart pause and which is distinct from the bradycardia indication.

2. The system according to claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to:

provide a first tachycardia indication if the heart rate of the patient was higher than the first threshold for a first tachycardia indicative duration; and

provide a second tachycardia indication if the heart rate of the patient is higher than the second threshold;

wherein the second threshold is higher than the first threshold.

3. The system according to claim 1 further comprising a wireless communication module coupled to the processor and operative to receive wireless instructions over a wireless network connection;

wherein the processor is further configured to modify at least one of the first and the second thresholds in response to the wireless instructions.

The system according to claim 1 wherein the processor is further configured to provide monitoring results that are responsive to information gathered by at least one additional sensor that is selected from a group consisting of a oxygen saturation sensor, a mechanical sensor, and an environmental sensor.

5. The system according to claim 1 wherein the processor configured to utilize three or more thresholds comprising at least the first threshold, the second threshold and at least one additional threshold;

wherein the additional threshold is higher than the first and the second threshold;

wherein the processor is further configured to provide an exceeding indication if the heart rate of the patient exceeded any of the at least one additional thresholds.

6. The system according to claim 1 wherein the processor is further configured to process the signals to detect atrial fibrillation, and to provide information indicative of atrial fibrillation of the heart of the patient during the monitoring period.

7. The system according to claim 1 further comprising a memory module operative to:

store a heart rate history of heart rates detected during the monitoring period, and replace stored information with newer detected information;

wherein the memory module is configured to replace stored information in response to priority levels that are associated with the first and the second thresholds.

8. A system for monitoring a heart of a patient, the system comprising:

a physiological data input interface, configured to receive signals indicative of cardiac activity of the patient;

a processor configured to process the signals to provide monitoring results; and

an output interface operative to provide the monitoring results;

wherein the monitoring results comprise information indicative of;

(a) a heart rate of the patient during a monitoring period;

(b) at least one first time period in which the heart rate of the patient exceeded a first threshold; and

(c) at least one second time period in which the heart rate of the patient exceeded both the first threshold and a second threshold;

wherein the processor is further configured to;

determine when the heart rate of the patient exceeds the first threshold for at least a first minimum duration; and

provide monitoring results that comprise information pertaining to first time periods that are longer than the first minimum duration.

9. The system according to claim 8, wherein the processor is further configured to:

determine when the heart rate of the patient exceeded the second threshold for at least a second minimum duration; and

to provide the monitoring results that comprise information pertaining to second time periods that are longer than the second minimum duration.

10. The system according to claim 8, wherein the output interface is further operative to issue an alert when at least one of the first and the second thresholds was exceeded for a predetermined minimum duration.

11. The system according to claim 10, further operative to wirelessly transmit the alert to a remote control center over a cellular telephony network.

12. The system according to claim 8 further comprising a wireless communication module coupled to the processor and operative to receive wireless instructions over a wireless network connection;

wherein the processor is further configured to modify at least one of the first and the second thresholds in response to the wireless instructions.

The system according to claim 8 wherein the processor is further configured to provide monitoring results that are responsive to information gathered by at least one additional sensor that is selected from a group consisting of a oxygen saturation sensor, a mechanical sensor, and an environmental sensor.

14. The system according to claim 8 wherein the processor configured to utilize three or more thresholds comprising at least the first threshold, the second threshold and at least one additional threshold;

wherein the additional threshold is higher than the first and the second threshold;

wherein the processor is further configured to provide an exceeding indication if the heart rate of the patient exceeded any of the at least one additional thresholds.

15. The system according to claim 8 wherein the processor is further configured to process the signals to detect atrial fibrillation, and to provide information indicative of atrial fibrillation of the heart of the patient during the monitoring period.

16. The system according to claim 8 further comprising a memory module operative to:

store a heart rate history of heart rates detected during the monitoring period, and replace stored information with newer detected information;

wherein the memory module is configured to replace stored information in response to priority levels that are associated with the first and the second thresholds.

17. A system for monitoring a heart of a patient, the system comprising:

a physiological data input interface, configured to receive signals indicative of cardiac activity of the patient;

a processor configured to process the signals to provide monitoring results; and

an output interface operative to provide the monitoring results;

wherein the monitoring results comprise information indicative of;

(a) a heart rate of the patient during a monitoring period;

(b) at least one first time period in which the heart rate of the patient exceeded a first threshold; and

(c) at least one second time period in which the heart rate of the patient exceeded both the first threshold and a second threshold;

wherein the processor is further configured to provide monitoring summary of the monitoring period;

wherein the monitoring summary comprises;

a first time summation responsive to times in which the heart rate of the patient exceeded the first threshold for periods longer than a first minimum duration, and

a second time summation responsive to times in which the heart rate of the patient exceeded the second threshold for periods longer than a second minimum duration.

18. The system according to claim 17, wherein the processor is further configured to process the signals to detect atrial fibrillation, and to provide information indicative of atrial fibrillation of the heart of the patient during the monitoring period.

19. The system according to claim 17 further comprising a wireless communication module coupled to the processor and operative to receive wireless instructions over a wireless network connection;

wherein the processor is further configured to modify at least one of the first and the second thresholds in response to the wireless instructions.

The system according to claim 17 wherein the processor is further configured to provide monitoring results that are responsive to information gathered by at least one additional sensor that is selected from a group consisting of a oxygen saturation sensor, a mechanical sensor, and an environmental sensor.

21. The system according to claim 17 wherein the processor configured to utilize three or more thresholds comprising at least the first threshold, the second threshold and at least one additional threshold;

wherein the additional threshold is higher than the first and the second threshold;

wherein the processor is further configured to provide an exceeding indication if the heart rate of the patient exceeded any of the at least one additional thresholds.

22. The system according to claim 17 further comprising a memory module operative to:

store a heart rate history of heart rates detected during the monitoring period, and replace stored information with newer detected information;

wherein the memory module is configured to replace stored information in response to priority levels that are associated with the first and the second thresholds.

23. A system for monitoring a heart of a patient, the system comprising:

a physiological data input interface, configured to receive signals indicative of cardiac activity of the patient;

a processor configured to process the signals to provide monitoring results; and

an output interface operative to provide the monitoring results;

wherein the monitoring results comprise information indicative of;

(a) a heart rate of the patient during a monitoring period;

(b) at least one first time period in which the heart rate of the patient exceeded a first threshold; and

(c) at least one second time period in which the heart rate of the patient exceeded both the first threshold and a second threshold;

wherein the processor is further configured to;

trigger a first monitoring state if the heart rate of the patient exceeds the first threshold for a first minimum duration, and

trigger a second monitoring state if the heart rate of the patient exceeds the second threshold for a second minimum duration, wherein the triggering of the second monitoring state involves ceasing the first monitoring state,

wherein timing information pertaining to the at least one first time period is gathered in the first monitoring state, and

wherein timing information pertaining to the at least one second time period is gathered in the second monitoring state.

24. The system according to claim 23, further comprising a memory module operative to:

store a heart rate history of heart rates detected during the monitoring period, and

replace stored information with newer detected information;

wherein the memory module is configured to replace stored information in response to priority levels that are associated with the first and the second thresholds.

25. The system according to claim 23 further comprising a wireless communication module coupled to the processor and operative to receive wireless instructions over a wireless network connection;

wherein the processor is further configured to modify at least one of the first and the second thresholds in response to the wireless instructions.

The system according to claim 23 wherein the processor is further configured to provide monitoring results that are responsive to information gathered by at least one additional sensor that is selected from a group consisting of a oxygen saturation sensor, a mechanical sensor, and an environmental sensor.

27. The system according to claim 23 wherein the processor configured to utilize three or more thresholds comprising at least the first threshold, the second threshold and at least one additional threshold;

wherein the additional threshold is higher than the first and the second threshold;

wherein the processor is further configured to provide an exceeding indication if the heart rate of the patient exceeded any of the at least one additional thresholds.

28. The system according to claim 23 wherein the processor is further configured to process the signals to detect atrial fibrillation, and to provide information indicative of atrial fibrillation of the heart of the patient during the monitoring period.

29. A system for monitoring a heart of a patient, the system comprising:

a physiological data input interface, configured to receive signals indicative of cardiac activity of the patient;

a processor configured to process the signals to provide monitoring results;

an output interface operative to provide the monitoring results;

wherein the monitoring results comprise information indicative of;

(a) a heart rate of the patient during monitoring period;

(b) at least one first time period in which the heart rate of the patient exceeded a first threshold; and

(c) at least one second time period in which the heart rate of the patient exceeded both the first threshold and a second threshold; and

a wireless communication module coupled to the processor and operative to receive wireless instructions over a wireless network connection;

wherein the processor is further configured to modify at least one of the first and the second thresholds in response to the wireless instructions.

30. The system according to claim 29 wherein the processor is further configured to provide monitoring results that are responsive to information gathered by at least one additional sensor that is selected from a group consisting of a oxygen saturation sensor, a mechanical sensor, and an environmental sensor.

31. The system according to claim 29 wherein the processor is further configured to process the signals to detect atrial fibrillation, and to provide information indicative of atrial fibrillation of the heart of the patient during the monitoring period.

32. The system according to claim 29 further comprising a memory module operative to:

store a heart rate history of heart rates detected during the monitoring period, and replace stored information with newer detected information;

wherein the memory module is configured to replace stored information in response to priority levels that are associated with the first and the second thresholds.

33. A system for monitoring a heart of a patient, the system comprising:

a physiological data input interface, configured to receive signals indicative of cardiac activity of the patient;

a processor configured to process the signals to provide monitoring results; and

an output interface operative to provide the monitoring results;

wherein the monitoring results comprise information indicative of;

(a) a heart rate of the patient during a monitoring period;

(b) at least one first time period in which the heart rate of the patient exceeded a first threshold; and

(c) at least one second time period in which the heart rate of the patient exceeded both the first threshold and a second threshold;

wherein the processor is further configured to provide monitoring results that are responsive to information gathered by at least one additional sensor that is selected from a group consisting of a oxygen saturation sensor, a mechanical sensor, and an environmental sensor.

34. The system according to claim 33 further comprising a wireless communication module coupled to the processor and operative to receive wireless instructions over a wireless network connection;

wherein the processor is further configured to modify at least one of the first and the second thresholds in response to the wireless instructions.

35. The system according to claim 33 wherein the processor is further configured to process the signals to detect atrial fibrillation, and to provide information indicative of atrial fibrillation of the heart of the patient during the monitoring period.

36. The system according to claim 33 further comprising a memory module operative to:

store a heart rate history of heart rates detected during the monitoring period, and replace stored information with newer detected information;

wherein the memory module is configured to replace stored information in response to priority levels that are associated with the first and the second thresholds.

37. A system for monitoring a heart of a patient, the system comprising:

a physiological data input interface, configured to receive signals indicative of cardiac activity of the patient;

a processor configured to process the signals to provide monitoring results; and

an output interface operative to provide the monitoring results;

wherein the monitoring results comprise information indicative of;

(a) a heart rate of the patient during a monitoring period;

(b) at least one first time period in which the heart rate of the patient exceeded a first threshold; and

(c) at least one second time period in which the heart rate of the patient exceeded both the first threshold and a second threshold;

wherein the processor is further configured to utilize three or more thresholds comprising at least the first threshold, the second threshold and at least one additional threshold;

wherein the additional threshold is higher than the first and the second threshold;

wherein the processor is further configured to provide an exceeding indication if the heart rate of the patient exceeded any of the at least one additional thresholds.

38. The system according to claim 37 further comprising a wireless communication module coupled to the processor and operative to receive wireless instructions over a wireless network connection;

wherein the processor is further configured to modify at least one of the first and the second thresholds in response to the wireless instructions.

39. The system according to claim 37 wherein the processor is further configured to process the signals to detect atrial fibrillation, and to provide information indicative of atrial fibrillation of the heart of the patient during the monitoring period.

40. The system according to claim 37 further comprising a memory module operative to:

store a heart rate history of heart rates detected during the monitoring period, and replace stored information with newer detected information;

wherein the memory module is configured to replace stored information in response to priority levels that are associated with the first and the second thresholds.
