Abstract

An LED backlight method for display systems comprising receiving a plurality of light emitting diodes categorized into a plurality of bins, wherein each bin references a separate range of white point colors, and determining an optimal order for mounting the plurality of light emitting diodes at spatially distributed positions, the plurality of light emitting diodes comprising white point colors associated with separate bins, wherein the optimal order of the plurality of light emitting diodes produces a light of a desired white point color when the light outputs of the plurality of light emitting diodes are mixed.

Claims

1. A computing device, comprising:

a display comprising at least two light emitting elements, each of the two light emitting elements having different white point color ranges from the other, wherein the at least two light emitting elements are positioned within the display in a predetermined spatial arrangement with respect to one another such that when the light outputs of the at least two light emitting elements are mixed the at least two light emitting elements provide a light that is within a desired white point color range; and

a central processing unit coupled to the display.

2. The computing device of claim 1, wherein the at least two light emitting elements comprise at least two light emitting diodes.

3. The computing device of claim 2 wherein the at least two light emitting diodes are mounted along an edge of the display spaced from a display area of the display that displays images to a user of the computing device.

4. The computing device of claim 1 wherein the at least two light emitting elements provide a backlight for the display.

5. The computing device of claim 1, wherein the different white point ranges are associated with different zones, each zone comprising multiple white point ranges.

6. The computing device of claim 1, wherein the predetermined spatial arrangement minimizes near field and far field color differences.

7. The computing device of claim 1, wherein the predetermined spatial arrangement minimizes a distance from a center point of the display.

8. The computing device of claim 1, wherein the predetermined spatial arrangement minimizes a distance from a shifted Black-Body curve.

9. A method for providing a desired white point color from a light source, the method comprising:

generating light from a plurality of light emitting elements, each light emitting element outputting white point colors falling within one of a plurality of predetermined white point color ranges, wherein the plurality of light emitting diodes are spatially arranged with respect to one another so as to produce a mixed light within a desired white point color range.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the plurality of light emitting elements comprise a plurality of light emitting diodes.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the plurality of light emitting diodes are mounted on a display panel in a predetermined order.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the plurality of light emitting diodes are mounted along an edge of the display panel and do not encroach behind a display area of the display panel.

13. The method of claim 9, wherein the plurality of predetermined white point color ranges are categorized within a plurality of zones, each zone having multiple predetermined white point color ranges associated therewith, and wherein the plurality of light emitting elements provide white point color ranges associated with at least two separate zones.

14. The method of claim 9 wherein the plurality of light emitting elements are spatially arranged with respect to one another so as to further minimize near field and far field color differences.

15. The method of claim 9 wherein the plurality of light emitting elements are spatially arranged with respect to one another so as to minimize a distance from a shifted Black-Body curve associated with the plurality of light emitting elements.
