Abstract

This disclosure relates to a system and method for dynamically managing load on network devices in a distributed manner. As the proliferation of data rich content and increasingly more capable mobile devices has continued, the amount of data communicated over mobile operator'"'"'s networks has exponentially increased. Upgrading the existing network to accommodate increased data traffic is neither desirable nor practical. One way to accommodate increased data traffic is by utilizing network resources more efficiently. This disclosure provides systems and methods for efficiently utilizing network resources by dynamically configuring the network in a distributed manner based on real-time load information.

Claims

1. A network device comprising:

one or more interfaces configured to provide communication with at least one other network device of the same type and with mobile stations; and

a processor, in communication with the one or more interfaces, configured to run a module stored in memory that is configured to;

send a message to the at least one other network device to request information on real-time load information of the at least one other network device;

receive the real-time load information from the at least one other network device;

determine an amount of load to be re-routed to the at least one other network device based on the real-time load information of the at least one other network device;

upon determining the amount of load to be re-routed to the at least one other network device, send a message to the at least one other network device to request setting aside data transfer capacity;

select mobile stations to be re-routed to the at least one other network device; and

cause the selected mobile stations to be re-routed to the at least one other network device, which includes modifying a serving network device identifier in a mobile station identifier associated with the selected mobile stations, so that data is communicated between the selected mobile stations and the at least one other network device.

The network device of claim 1, wherein the module is further configured to initiate a guard timer, after sending the message to request setting aside the data transfer capacity, wherein if the selected mobile stations are not re-routed until the guard timer reaches a threshold value, the module is configured to send an error message to a network operator.

3. The network device of claim 2, wherein the module is further configured to cause the re-routing of the selected mobile stations to stop and to roll-back any operations performed since the initiation of the guard timer.

4. The network device of claim 1, wherein the module is configured to transmit buffered data for the re-routed mobile stations to the at least one other network device.

5. The network device of claim 1, wherein the module is configured to request the other network device to return all mobile stations offloaded from the first network device back to the first network device.

6. The network device of claim 1, wherein the module is configured to determine if the network device satisfies overload criteria by inspecting its own real-time load information.

7. A method comprising:

sending a message from a first network device to a second network device to request real-time load information of the second network device, wherein the first network device and the second network device are of the same type, and wherein the first network device and the second network device are configured to communicate data to and from first and second sets of mobile stations, respectively;

receiving, at the first network device, the real-time load information from the second network device;

determining, at the first network device, an amount of load to be re-routed from the first network device to the second network device based on the real-time load information of the second network device;

in response to determining the amount of load to be re-routed to the second network device, sending a message from the first network device to the second network device to request setting aside data transfer capacity for the first network device;

selecting, by the first network device, mobile stations to be re-routed from the first network device to the second network device; and

causing the selected mobile stations to be re-routed to the second network device so that data is communicated between the selected mobile stations and the second network device, wherein causing the selected mobile stations to be re-routed to the second network device includes modifying a serving network device identifier in a mobile station identifier associated with the selected mobile stations, and providing the mobile station identifier to the selected mobile stations.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the first network device and the second network device include one of a serving general packet radio service support node (SGSN), a gateway general packet radio service support node (GGSN), a mobility management entity (MME), and an IP multimedia subsystem (IMS).

9. The method of claim 7, wherein the mobile station identifier includes a packet-temporary mobile subscriber identity (P-TMSI), and wherein the serving network device identifier includes a network resource identifier (NRI).

10. The method of claim 7, wherein the real-time load information includes an amount of data transfer capacity that can be set aside for other network devices.

11. The method of claim 7, further comprising transmitting data buffered at the first network device for the re-routed mobile stations to the second network device.

12. The method of claim 7, further comprising transmitting session information for the re-routed mobile stations to the second network device, wherein the session information includes an international mobile subscriber identity (IMSI), mobile management (MM) context, or packet data protocol (PDP) context.

13. The method of claim 7, further comprising determining, at the first network device, if the first network device satisfies overload criteria by inspecting its own real-time load information.

14. The method of claim 7, further comprising requesting the second network device to return all mobile stations offloaded from the first network device back to the first network device.

15. A system comprising:

a first network device in communication with a second network device, wherein the first network device and the second network device are of the same type, and wherein the first network device and the second network device are configured to communicate data to and from first and second sets of mobile stations, respectively;

wherein the first network device is configured to send a message to the second network device to request real-time load information;

wherein, in response to receiving the real-time load information from the second network device, the first network device is further configured to determine the amount of load to be re-routed to the second network device based on the real-time load information;

wherein the first network device is configured to send a message to the second network device to request setting aside data transfer capacity for the first network device;

wherein the first network device is configured to select mobile stations to be re-routed to the second network device; and

wherein the first network device is configured to modify a serving network device identifier in a mobile station identifier associated with the selected mobile stations to cause the selected mobile stations to be re-routed to the second network device so that data is communicated between the selected mobile stations and the second network device.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the real-time load information includes the amount of data transfer capacity that can be set aside for other network devices.

17. The system of claim 15, wherein the first network device transmits buffered data for the re-routed mobile stations to the second network device.

18. The system of claim 15, wherein the first network device transmits session information for the re-routed mobile stations to the second network device.

19. The system of claim 15, wherein the first network device receives a set of packet-temporary mobile subscriber identity (P-TMSI) and tunnel endpoint identifier (TEID) from the second network device for re-routing mobile stations.

20. The system of claim 15, wherein the first network device is configured to request the second network device to return all mobile stations offloaded from the first network device back to the first network device.
