Abstract

According to certain embodiments of the present invention, a graphical presentation is generated from a data representation. A lens is applied to reveal a region-of-interest occluded by an occluding portion of an image. The lens includes an extent of the lens, a focal region including a magnification and a transparency to reduce occlusion of the region-of-interest by the occluding portion, and a shoulder region between the extent of the lens and the focal region. The shoulder region provides context for the focal region with respect to a portion of the image outside of the extent of the lens by preserving visibility of information surrounding the focal region. The shoulder region also has decreasing transparency as depth decreases from the focal region to the portion of the image outside of the extent of the lens.

Claims

1. A method for generating a graphical presentation from a data representation, the method comprising:

applying a lens to reveal a region-of-interest within an image, wherein the region-of-interest is occluded by an occluding portion of the image;

wherein the lens includes;

an extent of the lens,

a focal region including a magnification and a transparency to reduce occlusion of the region-of-interest by the occluding portion, and

a shoulder region between the extent of the lens and the focal region; and

wherein the shoulder region;

provides context for the focal region with respect to a portion of the image outside of the extent of the lens by preserving visibility of information surrounding the focal region, and

has decreasing transparency as depth decreases from the focal region to the portion of the image outside of the extent of the lens.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

slicing the occluding portion into slices normal to a depth axis of the image; and

applying transparencies to the slices as a function of depth of the slices to form the shoulder region.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the occluding portion comprises an occluding polygon.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising:

converting the image into a mesh of polygons including the occluding polygon.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein:

the image comprises a landscape image;

the occluding portion comprises a first building; and

the region-of-interest comprises a second building.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein:

the image comprises a computer-aided design (“

CAD”

) image;

the occluding portion comprises a first component; and

the region-of-interest comprises a second component.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

adjusting the transparency of the focal region in response to receiving a signal for adjusting the transparency in the focal region from a graphical user interface (“

GUI”

).

8. The method of claim 7, further comprising:

adjusting the magnification of the focal region in response to receiving a signal for adjusting the magnification in the focal region from the GUI.

9. At least one non-transitory computer-readable medium including program instructions, the program instructions comprising:

application instructions for applying a lens to reveal a region-of-interest within an image, wherein the region-of-interest is occluded by an occluding portion of the image;

wherein the lens includes;

an extent of the lens,

a focal region including a magnification and a transparency to reduce occlusion of the region-of-interest by the occluding portion, and

a shoulder region between the extent of the lens and the focal region; and

wherein the shoulder region;

provides context for the focal region with respect to a portion of the image outside of the extent of the lens by preserving visibility of information surrounding the focal region, and

has decreasing transparency as depth decreases from the focal region to the portion of the image outside of the extent of the lens.

10. The at least one computer-readable medium of claim 9, wherein the program instructions further comprise:

slicing instructions for slicing the occluding portion into slices normal to a depth axis of the image; and

application instructions for applying transparencies to the slices as a function of depth of the slices to form the shoulder region.

11. The at least one computer-readable medium of claim 9, wherein the occluding portion comprises an occluding polygon.

12. The at least one computer-readable medium of claim 11, wherein the program instructions further comprise:

conversion instructions for converting the image into a mesh of polygons including the occluding polygon.

13. The at least one computer-readable medium of claim 9, wherein:

the image comprises a landscape image;

the occluding portion comprises a first building; and

the region-of-interest comprises a second building.

14. The at least one computer-readable medium of claim 9, wherein:

the image comprises a computer-aided design (“

CAD”

) image;

the occluding portion comprises a first component; and

the region-of-interest comprises a second component.

15. The at least one computer-readable medium of claim 9, wherein the program instructions further comprise:

adjustment instructions for adjusting the transparency of the focal region in response to receiving a signal for adjusting the transparency in the focal region from a graphical user interface (“

GUI”

).

16. The at least one computer-readable medium of claim 15, wherein the program instructions further comprise:

adjustment instructions for adjusting the magnification of the focal region in response to receiving a signal for adjusting the magnification in the focal region from the GUI.

17. A data processing system comprising a processor and memory including instructions that are executable by the processor to cause the data processing system to perform operations comprising:

applying a lens to reveal a region-of-interest within an image, wherein the region-of-interest is occluded by an occluding portion of the image;

wherein the lens includes;

an extent of the lens,

a focal region including a magnification and a transparency to reduce occlusion of the region-of-interest by the occluding portion, and

a shoulder region between the extent of the lens and the focal region; and

wherein the shoulder region;

provides context for the focal region with respect to a portion of the image outside of the extent of the lens by preserving visibility of information surrounding the focal region, and

has decreasing transparency as depth decreases from the focal region to the portion of the image outside of the extent of the lens.

18. The data processing system of claim 17, wherein the instructions are executable by the processor to cause the data processing system to perform operations further comprising:

slicing the occluding portion into slices normal to a depth axis of the image; and

applying transparencies to the slices as a function of depth of the slices to form the shoulder region.

19. The data processing system of claim 17, wherein the occluding portion comprises an occluding polygon.

20. The data processing system of claim 19, wherein the instructions are executable by the processor to cause the data processing system to perform operations further comprising:

converting the image into a mesh of polygons including the occluding polygon.
