Abstract

Support devices and pods for the head and neck region of patients undergoing radiation therapy are provided herein. The pod generally includes a support shell shaped to generally conform to the shape of the head and neck region of the patient, a foam insert that conforms to the head and neck region of the patient, and an immobilization facemask attached directly to the shell, thereby facilitating close placement of the radiation beam delivery device to the patient and reducing any attenuation and perturbation of radiation doses directed at the patient. The components of the pod are made from materials having properties that reduce any attenuation and perturbation of prescribed radiation doses.

Claims

1. A pod for supporting a head and neck region of a patient during radiation treatment, the pod comprising:

a shell generally conforming to the head and neck region of the patient, the shell comprising a shell caudal end, a cephalad end, and the shell extending upwardly from an inner surface of the shell and around the sides of the patient'"'"'s head forming a channel, the shell tapering to a smaller thickness as the shell extends upwardly from the inner surface of the shell;

a facemask configured to attach to an outer surface of the shell to immobilize the patient, the facemask having a first facemask lateral edge and a second facemask lateral edge and configured to extend laterally in the head and neck region of the patient; and

a facemask-to-shell attachment system comprising

a first pin formed in an outer surface of the shell on one side of the patient'"'"'s heads,

a second pin formed on an outer surface of the shell on the other side of the patient'"'"'s,

a first receiving slot near the first facemask lateral edge to receive the first pin, and

a second receiving slot near the second facemask lateral edge to receive the second pin.

2. The pod of claim 1, wherein the shell is tapered with a gradient from about 0.1 mm water equivalency/mm to about 5 mm water equivalency/mm.

3. The pod of claim 1, wherein the shell is tapered with a gradient of about 0.5 mm water equivalency/mm.

4. The pod of claim 1, further comprising a foam insert located within the channel in the head and neck region of the patient, wherein, the insert is shaped to conform to the head and neck of the patient.

5. The pod of claim 4, further comprising a pod liner located between an inner surface of the shell and the foam insert, the liner covering at least a portion of the shell inner surface.

6. The pod of claim 5, wherein the pod liner has a water equivalent thickness that is less than about 0.3 mm.

7. The pod of claim 1, wherein the shell has a radiographical thickness of less than about 7 mm of water at locations where a radiation beam passes through.

8. The pod of claim 1, wherein the shell has a radiographical thickness that is less than about 0.5 mm of water per 2 mm of distance at locations where a radiation beam passes through.

9. The pod of claim 1, wherein the shell is made from one of polyethylene fiber, aramid fiber, and carbon fiber.

10. A pod for immobilizing a head region of a patient during radiation treatment, the pod comprising:

a shell shaped to generally conform to the shape of the head and neck region of the patient, the shell extending longitudinally from a shell caudal end to a cephalad end, the shell extending from a first shell edge to a second shell edge, the shell being configured to extend upwardly from an inner surface of the shell and around the sides of said patient'"'"'s head, the tapering to a smaller thickness as the shell extends upward to terminate at the first and second shell edges, the shell defining a channel between the first shell edge and the second shell edge, a width of the shell at the caudal end being greater than a width of the shell at the cephalad end;

a facemask configured to attach to the first shell edge and the second shell edge of the shell in order to immobilize the patient'"'"'s face, the facemask having a first facemask edge and a second facemask edge; and

a facemask-to-shell attachment system comprising

a first locating pin formed near the a first shell edge,

a second locating pin formed near the second shell edge,

a first receiving slot near the first facemask edge to receive the first locating pin, and

a second receiving slot near the second facemask edge to receive the second locating pin.

11. The pod of claim 10, wherein at least one of the first shell edge and the second shell edge is tapered with a gradient from about 0.1 mm water equivalency/mm to about 5 mm water equivalency/mm.

12. The pod of claim 10, wherein a portion of at least one of the first shell edge and the second shell edge is tapered with a gradient of about 0.5 mm water equivalency/mm.

13. The pod of claim 10, wherein the shell has a radiographical thickness of less than about 7 mm of water at locations where a radiation beam passes through.

14. The pod of claim 10, wherein the shell has a radiographical thickness that is less than about 0.5 mm of water per 2 mm of distance at locations where a radiation beam passes through.

15. The pod of claim 10, wherein the shell is made from at least one of polyethylene fiber, aramid fiber, and carbon fiber.

16. A device for providing radiation treatment to a head and neck region of a patient, the device comprising:

a shell generally conforming to the head and neck region of the patient, the shell comprising a first shell edge and a second shell edge, the shell being configured to extend upwardly from an inner surface of the shell and around the sides of the patient'"'"'s head, the first shell edge and the second shell edge each tapering to a smaller thickness as the shell extends upward, the shell further comprising a first locating pin near the first shell edge and a second locating pin near the second shell edge;

a facemask configured for attachment to the shell, the facemask comprising a first facemask lateral edge and a second facemask lateral edge, the first facemask lateral edge comprising a first receiving slot configured to receive the first locating pin, the second facemask lateral edge comprising a second receiving slot configured to receive the second locating pin.

17. The device of claim 16, wherein the shell extends longitudinally from a shell caudal end to a cephalad end and a width of the shell at the caudal end is greater than a width of the shell at the cephalad end.

18. The device of claim 16, wherein at least one of the first shell edge and the second shell edge is tapered with a gradient from about 0.1 mm water equivalency/mm to about 5 mm water equivalency/mm.

19. The device of claim 16, wherein a portion of at least one of the first shell edge and the second shell edge is tapered with a gradient of about 0.5 mm water equivalency/mm.

20. The device of claim 16, wherein the shell has a radiographical thickness of less than about 7 mm of water at locations where a radiation beam passes through.

21. The device of claim 16, wherein the shell has a radiographical thickness that is less than about 0.5 mm of water per 2 mm of distance at locations where a radiation beam passes through.
