Method for distinguishing electrochemical sensors
First Claim
1. A method of determining a type of electrochemical test sensor used with an instrument configured to be used in determining at least one analyte concentration in a fluid sample, the method comprising the acts of:
- forming an electrical connection between an electrochemical test sensor and the instrument, the electrochemical test sensor including an enzyme and a chemical marker;
applying a potential having a magnitude sufficient to initiate a redox reaction of the chemical marker and insufficient to determine the at least one analyte concentration, the potential being applied by the instrument; and
determining the type of electrochemical test sensor based on a predetermined amount of current generated in response to the potential being applied.

Abstract
A method for distinguishing between types of electrochemical test sensors in a meter is disclosed. The method comprises the acts of providing an electrochemical test sensor comprising an enzyme and a chemical additive, contacting the test sensor to the meter to form an electrical connection, applying a potential having a magnitude sufficient to initiate a redox reaction of the chemical additive, and determining which type of electrochemical test sensor is being used based on whether a predetermined signal has been generated after the potential has been applied. The meter is adapted to determine an analyte concentration in a fluid sample.
