Abstract

The disclosure is directed to a mobile communication device that measures characteristics or attributes of a first communications network that vary according to physical location within that first communications network to create a fingerprint, or signature, of a location within the first communications network. When the fingerprint of the current location of the mobile device is created it can be compared to a known fingerprint associated with a second communication network to determine the mobile device'"'"'s proximity to the second communications network. Furthermore, the second and subsequent fingerprint that are generated for a particular communications network can be used to modify the stored fingerprint so as to refine it to improve detecting the proximity to the communications network.

Claims

1. A wireless communications device comprising:

a memory configured to store a first fingerprint identifying a location corresponding to a first communications network based on one or more reference signals from a second communications network; and

a processor configured to determine a second fingerprint, when the wireless communications device is within the location, based on a current measurement by the wireless communication device of the one or more reference signals, and modify the first fingerprint based on the second fingerprint.

2. The wireless communications device of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to establish a connection between the wireless communications device and the first communications network and determine the second fingerprint after establishing the connection.

3. The wireless communications device of claim 1, wherein the first fingerprint includes deviation information related to a virtual size of a coverage region for an access point in the first communications network.

4. The wireless communications device of claim 3, wherein the processor is further configured to modify the first fingerprint by adjusting the deviation information based on the current measurement of the one or more reference signals.

5. The wireless communications device of claim 1, wherein the first fingerprint comprises phase information for the one or more reference signals.

6. The wireless communications device of claim 5, wherein the processor is further configured to modify the first fingerprint by adjusting the phase information based on the current measurement of the one or more reference signals.

7. The wireless communications device of claim 1, wherein the first fingerprint comprises signal strength information for the one or more reference signals.

8. The wireless communications device of claim 7, wherein the processor is further configured to modify the first fingerprint by adjusting the signal strength information based the current measurement of the one or more reference signals.

19. The wireless communications device of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to track a modification number corresponding to the modifying of the first fingerprint.

20. The wireless communications device of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to modify the first fingerprint based on the second fingerprint and prior fingerprints.

21. The wireless communications device of claim 1, wherein the first fingerprint and the second fingerprint each comprise vectors having one or more components each having a component value corresponding to a characteristic of the one or more reference signals.

22. The wireless communications device of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to detect a proximity to the first communications network based on comparing the second fingerprint to the first fingerprint, and to trigger a search for the second communications network based on the comparison resulting in matching a triggering parameter.

27. The wireless communications device of claim 1, wherein the first communications network is a wireless local area network (WLAN) and the second communications network is a wide area network (WAN).

28. The wireless communications device of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to refrain from monitoring the first communications network when the wireless communications device is outside of the location.

29. The wireless communications device of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to compare a current fingerprint with a known fingerprint to determine if the wireless communications device is within the location.

30. The wireless communications device of claim 1, wherein the modifying comprises replacing the first fingerprint with the second fingerprint to provide an updated fingerprint based on the current measurement by the wireless communication device of the one or more reference signals.

31. The wireless communications device of claim 1, wherein the second fingerprint stores a signal strength corresponding to the current measurement by the wireless communication device of the one or more reference signals.

32. The wireless communications device of claim 1, wherein the second communications network is a terrestrial communications network.

9. A method of communications comprising:

storing, at a wireless communications device, a first fingerprint identifying a location corresponding to a first communications network based on one or more reference signals from a second communications network;

determining a second finger print, when the wireless communications device is within the location, based on a current measurement by the wireless communication device of the one or more reference signals; and

modifying the first fingerprint based on the second fingerprint.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the first fingerprint includes deviation information related to a virtual size of a coverage region for an access point in the first communications network.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the first fingerprint is modified by adjusting the deviation information based on the current measurement of the one or more reference signals.

12. The method of claim 9, wherein the first fingerprint comprises phase information for the one or more reference signals.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the first fingerprint is modified by adjusting the phase information based on the current measurement of the one or more reference signals.

14. The method of claim 9, wherein the first fingerprint comprises signal strength information for the one or more reference signals.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the first fingerprint is modified by adjusting the signal strength information based on the current measurement of the one or more reference signals.

23. The method of claim 9 further comprising tracking a modification number corresponding to the modifying of the first fingerprint.

24. The method of claim 9 further comprising modifying the first fingerprint based on the second fingerprint and prior fingerprints.

25. The method of claim 9, wherein the first fingerprint and the second fingerprint each comprise vectors having one or more components each having a component value corresponding to a characteristic of the one or more reference signals.

The method of claim 9 further comprising detecting a proximity to the first communications network based on comparing the second fingerprint to the first fingerprint, and to trigger a search for the second communications network based on the comparison resulting in matching a triggering parameter.

16. At least one processor configured to communicate comprising:

a first module for storing, at a wireless communications device, a first fingerprint identifying a location corresponding to a first communications network based on one or more reference signals from a second communications network;

a second module for determining a second finger print, when the wireless communications device is within the location, based on a current measurement by the wireless communication device of the one or more reference signals; and

a third module for modifying the first fingerprint based on the second fingerprint.

17. A computer program product, comprising:

a computer-readable medium comprising;

a first set of codes for causing a computer to store a first fingerprint identifying a location corresponding to a first communications network based on one or more reference signals from a second communications network;

a second set of codes for causing the computer to determine a second finger print, when the computer is within the location, based on a current measurement by the computer of the one or more reference signals; and

a third set of codes for causing the computer to modify the first fingerprint based on the second fingerprint.

18. An apparatus comprising:

means for storing, at a wireless communications device, a first fingerprint identifying a location corresponding to a first communications network based on one or more reference signals from a second communications network;

means for determining a second finger print, when the wireless communications device is within the location, based on a current measurement by the wireless communications device of the one or more reference signals; and

means for modifying the first fingerprint based on the second fingerprint.
