1. A system for assisting in locating a position of a mobile wireless device, comprising:

  • a plurality of base stations in range of said wireless device including;

    an almanac of base station identifiers including a first identifier of a cooperative terrestrial base station that can communicate with the wireless device in at least one mode that allows unique identification of the wireless device and that will normally service the wireless device and send the almanac to the wireless device, and a second identifier of an uncooperative terrestrial base station configured to bidirectionally communicate with another wireless device and that is capable of data transport from a subscriber device and is not configured to bidirectionally communicate with the wireless device but will provide information useful in determining a distance, wherein the uncooperative terrestrial base station is determined to lie within an annular ring around the cooperative terrestrial base station, and wherein a width of the annular ring is determined based on a communication mode of the uncooperative terrestrial base station, and wherein the almanac of base station identifiers is provided to the wireless device.
