Abstract

A vehicle guidance system is provided with a controller configured to receive input indicative of a relative position between a charging port and a charging pad, and to provide output indicative of a distance vector therebetween in response to the input. An interface communicates with the controller and is configured to display a base element representing the charging port and target element representing the charging pad positioned relative to each other according to the distance vector.

Claims

1. A vehicle system comprising:

at least two sensor arrays each being configured to provide output indicative of an angular direction between the sensor array and a transmitter remote from the vehicle system, in response to receiving a signal from the transmitter;

a controller in communication with the sensor arrays and configured to provide output indicative of a distance vector between at least one of the sensor arrays and the transmitter in response to the output indicative of the angular direction between the sensor array and the transmitter, wherein the controller is further configured to provide an activation signal to an external controller, the external controller being electrically connected to the transmitter, and wherein the external controller instructs the transmitter to provide the signal in response to receiving the activation signal and wherein the external controller communicates with a charging pad for controlling electrical power provided to a charging port of the vehicle system; and

an interface communicating with the controller and configured to display a base element representing the charging port and a target element representing the charging pad positioned relative to each other according to the distance vector.

The system of claim 1 wherein the charging port is integrated with a vehicle, wherein the output indicative of the angular direction comprises at least two direction signals, wherein each direction signal is indicative of an angular direction between a location on the vehicle and a location of the charging pad, and wherein the controller triangulates the distance vector in response to the at least two direction signals.

The system of claim 2 further comprising at least two sensor arrays communicating with the controller, wherein each sensor array is configured to provide a direction signal indicative of an angular direction between the sensor array and the charging pad and wherein the controller is further configured to provide the output indicative of the distance vector in response to the direction signals.

The system of claim 3 wherein the at least two sensor arrays comprise a first sensor array and a second sensor array aligned with each other along a transverse axis and wherein an angular direction between the first sensor array and the charging pad and an angular direction between the second sensor array and the charging pad are determined relative to the transverse axis.

The system of claim 3 wherein each sensor array further comprises at least two sensors each being configured to provide output indicative of a time when a signal was received from a transmitter electrically connected to the charging pad, and a microcontroller communicating with the sensors and configured to provide the direction signal in response to the output indicative of the times when the signals were received.

6. The system of claim 5 wherein the sensors are internally mounted within a body of the vehicle and configured to receive a radio frequency (RF) wireless signal.

7. The system of claim 5 wherein the sensors are externally mounted upon a body of the vehicle and configured to receive an infrared (IR) wireless signal.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein the interface displays the base element overlaid upon the target element when the charging port is aligned with the charging pad.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein the distance vector is approximately zero when the charging port is aligned with the charging pad.

10. The system of claim 1 wherein the external controller is further configured to instruct the transmitter to provide the signal in response to a garage door being opened.

11. A vehicle comprising:

a charging port configured to receive an inductive charging current;

at least two sensor arrays, each configured to provide output indicative of an angular direction between the sensor array and a transmitter, the transmitter being connected to an external controller and remote from the vehicle;

a controller configured to provide an activation signal to the external controller for activating the transmitter and to provide output indicative of a distance vector between the charging port and the transmitter based on the output indicative of the angular direction between the sensor arrays and transmitter, wherein the external controller communicates with a charging pad for controlling the inductive charging current provided to the charging port; and

an interface communicating with the controller and configured to display a base element representing the charging port and a target element representing a charging pad positioned relative to each other according to the distance vector.

12. The vehicle of claim 11 further comprising a battery electrically connected to the charging port for storing electrical power.

13. The vehicle of claim 11 wherein the charging port is electromagnetically coupled to a charging pad of an external power supply during charging.

14. The vehicle of claim 13 wherein the charging port comprises a secondary coil for receiving electrical power from a primary coil of the charging pad during charging.

15. The vehicle of claim 11 further comprising at least one electric motor configured to provide output torque for propelling the vehicle.

16. The vehicle of claim 11 wherein the charging port receives electrical power from an external power supply having a solar panel.
