Abstract

It is known in the art to use an apparatus to enhance the visual appearance of the veins and arteries in a patient to facilitate insertion of needles into those veins and arteries. This application discloses a number of inventions that add additional data collection and presentation capabilities to a handheld vein enhancement apparatus and a set of processes for the collection of blood and the delivery of IV medicines that use the handheld device to mediate the process.

Claims

1. A vein enhancer, for projecting an enhanced image of a patient'"'"'s veins onto a target area of the patient to more easily perform a venipuncture, said vein enhancer comprising:

a means to transmit a first wavelength of light on the target area,

a means to capture an image formed by said light at said first wavelength being differentially absorbed and reflected by subcutaneous veins and surrounding tissue of the target area, said means to capture said image being further configured to output a signal representative of said image;

a means to perform image processing of said image, said image processing comprising one or more analyses of the subcutaneous veins detected within said image and said one or more analyses at least comprising determining a depth of one or more of said detected veins;

a means to project said image onto the target area using a second wavelength, with said detected veins in said image directly overlying the subcutaneous veins therein, said projection means further configured to selectively project data received from said one or more analyses onto the target area;

wherein said means to perform image processing being further configured to vary an output intensity of said means to transmit a first wavelength.

The vein enhancer according to claim 1 wherein said means to perform image processing is configured to vary said output intensity of said means to transmit a first wavelength to provide variation between two or more image frames, and said means to perform image processing is further configured to compare an image frame at a first intensity with one or more image frames at a successively higher intensity to determine a first appearance of said one or more detected veins and to determine an absolute depth for each said detected vein.

3. The vein enhancer according to claim 2, wherein the selectively projected data comprises tagging said first appearance of each of said detected veins therein with a respective indicator symbol.

4. The vein enhancer according to claim 3, wherein said means to perform image processing is configured to respectively superimpose one or more additional indicator symbols across said detected veins, to identify a location for said absolute depth for each said detected vein.

The vein enhancer according to claim 4, wherein one or more said additional respective indicator symbols comprises a line, and wherein said means to perform image processing is configured to cause said means to project said image to project a length for said line corresponding to said absolute depth.

6. The vein enhancer according to claim 5 wherein said first wavelength comprises an infrared wavelength and said second wavelength comprises a visible red wavelength.

7. The vein enhancer according to claim 1 wherein said means to perform image processing is further configured with a user interface comprising an input to permit a user-set maximum intensity for said varied output intensity.

8. The vein enhancer according to claim 1 wherein said means to perform image processing is further configured to cause said projection means to project patient data onto the target surface, said patient data comprising a patient identification.

9. The vein enhancer according to claim 8 wherein said patient data further comprises information concerning the process to be performed.

10. The vein enhancer according to claim 8 wherein said patient data further comprises information on the status of said vein enhancer.

The vein enhancer according to claim 1 wherein said means to perform image processing is configured to vary said output intensity of said means to transmit a first wavelength provides variation between two or more image frames, and said means to perform image processing is further configured to compare an image frame at a first intensity with one or more image frames at a successively higher intensity to determine a first appearance of said one or more detected veins to determine an relative depth for each said detected veins information.

12. The vein enhancer according to claim 11 wherein said relative depth for each of said detected veins is represented by the length of a respective line projected onto the target area by said means to project said image.

13. The vein enhancer according to claim 12 wherein said respective line length is projected to respectively span across said detected veins at the location of said first appearance on each said detected vein.

14. The vein enhancer according to claim 12 wherein said respective line length is projected using a second means to project, said second means to project being configured to emit a third wavelength of light having a color different than the color of said second wavelength.

15. The vein enhancer according to claim 14 wherein said first wavelength is an infrared wavelength, and said second wavelength is a visible red wavelength.

16. The vein enhancer according to claim 12 wherein an intensity of a projection of said respective line length is configured to vary in accordance with said relative depth.

17. The vein enhancer according to claim 1 wherein said means to perform image processing is further configured to use a line detection algorithm to analyze said detected veins in said image to locate a substantially linear segment of a vein.

18. The vein enhancer according to claim 1 further comprising a robotic system, said robotic system comprising a robotic arm configured to be remotely controlled by a control system, said vein enhancer being secured to said robotic arm;

and wherein said remotely controlled robotic arm is configured to remotely perform the venipuncture with said projected image, by a camera mounted to said robotic arm being configured to transmit said projected image on the target area to a remote display.

19. The vein enhancer apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising a second means to capture a second image configured to be responsive to said second wavelength;

wherein said means to perform image processing is further configured to obtain a non-invasive measurement of arterial oxygen saturation by measuring differential absorption between oxygenated hemoglobin and non-oxygenated hemoglobin based on said first and second images, and said means to perform image processing is configured to use said differential absorption measurements to calculate an oxygenation level and a pulse rate; and

wherein said first wavelength is an infrared wavelength, and said second wavelength is a red wavelength.

20. A vein enhancer for projecting enhanced vein images onto a target area of a patient to more easily perform a venipuncture on the patient, said vein enhancer comprising:

a first laser configured to selectively transmit light at a first wavelength onto the target area;

a photo detector configured to be responsive to said first wavelength of light, and to detect said first wavelength of light after being reflected from the target area, as a contrasted image formed by different amounts of absorption and reflection by subcutaneous veins and the surrounding tissue, to detect veins therein, said photo detector further configured to output a signal representing said contrasted image;

a computer and software configured to receive said signal and to perform image processing of said contrasted image;

a second laser configured to selectively transmit light at a second wavelength within the visible spectrum, said second laser further configured to receive said signal from said photo detector and to thereby project said contrasted image onto the target area with said detected veins in said contrasted image directly overlying the subcutaneous veins therein; and

wherein said image processing comprises said software configured to cause said computer to perform one or more analysis of said detected veins in said contrasted image, said second laser further configured to project data resulting from said one or more analyses onto the target area to cooperatively assist in the venipuncture, in conjunction with said projected image contrast;

said one or more analyses comprising determining a depth of one or more of said detected veins; and

wherein said computer is further configured to vary an output intensity of said first laser.

21. The vein enhancer according to claim 20

wherein said computer is further configured to vary said output intensity of said first laser between two or more image frames;

and wherein said computer and software are configured to determine said depth by comparing an image frame at a first intensity with one or more image frames at a successively higher intensity to determine a first appearance of said one or more detected veins.

22. The vein enhancer according to claim 21,

wherein said computer is configured to obtain real-time quantitative data and/or qualitative data about said detected veins by performing said one or more analyses in real-time, and to cause said second laser to project said quantitative data and/or qualitative data onto the target area;

and

wherein said one or more analyses comprise one or more of;

an analysis of venipuncture-specific information, an analysis of a patient attribute, and an analysis of a current status of said vein enhancer.

23. The vein enhancer according to claim 22, wherein said computer is configured for said analysis of venipuncture-specific information by being configured to use a line detection algorithm to locate a substantially linear segment of a vein.

24. The vein enhancer according to claim 23, wherein said computer is configured for said analysis of a patient attribute by being configured to perform one or more of:

an analysis to determine a patient'"'"'s temperature and an analysis to determine a patient'"'"'s blood pressure.

25. The vein enhancer according to claim 24, wherein said computer is configured to cause said second laser to project of an icon and/or text beside said quantitative data and/or said qualitative data, said icon and/or said text indicating said analysis used to produce said quantitative data and/or said qualitative data.

26. The vein enhancer according to claim 25, wherein said quantitative data and/or said qualitative data comprises numeric data and/or graphical data.

27. The vein enhancer according to claim 24, wherein said projection of quantitative data from said analysis of said patient attribute comprises projection of a numeric temperature reading and/or projection of a numeric blood pressure reading;

and wherein said projection of qualitative data from said analysis of said patient attribute comprises projection of a graphical indicator from the group of graphical indicators consisting of;

a check-mark being for normal temperature or pressure, an arrow pointing upward being for a high temperature or high blood pressure, and an arrow pointing downward being for a low temperature or low blood pressure.

28. The vein enhancer according to claim 27, further comprising a scanner configured to create a pattern of light on the target area by scanning said first and second lasers.

29. The vein enhancer according to claim 28, wherein said first wavelength is at in the range of 620 nm to 1400 nm.

30. The vein enhancer according to claim 21, wherein said computer is configured to identify said depth on said projection of said contrasted image by being configured to tag said first appearance of said detected veins therein with a respective indicator symbol.

31. The vein enhancer according to claim 30, wherein said computer is configured to cause said second laser to project one or more additional indicator symbols and to superimpose said one or more additional indicator symbols across said detected veins, to respectively identify a location for said absolute depth for each said detected vein.

32. The vein enhancer according to claim 31, wherein said one or more additional indicator symbols comprises a line, and wherein said computer is configured to project a length for said one or more indicator line corresponding to an absolute depth or a relative depth of each said detected vein.

33. The vein enhancer according to claim 32, wherein said computer is configured to adjust a gain of said photo detector.

34. The vein enhancer according to claim 33, wherein said computer is configured to cause said second laser to project said respective indicator line using a different intensity of light for differences in said depth of said detected veins.

35. The vein enhancer according to claim 33, wherein said computer is further configured to cause said second laser to project said respective indicator line using different colored light for differences in said depth of said detected veins.

36. The vein enhancer according to claim 30, wherein said respective indicator symbol comprises projection of one or more patterns superimposed over said detected veins in said projected image contrast to indicate said depth;

and wherein said one or more superimposed patterns comprise crosshatching for shallow-depth veins and solid for deep-depth veins.

37. The vein enhancer according to claim 21, wherein said computer is configured to accept a user input and set a user-set maximum intensity for said varied intensity of said first laser.

38. The vein enhancer according to claim 20 further comprising

a robotic system, said robotic system comprising a robotic arm configured to be remotely controlled by a control system, said vein enhancer being secured to said robotic arm;

and

wherein said robotic arm is configured to remotely perform the venipuncture with said projected image by a camera mounted to said robotic arm being configured to transmit said projected image on the target area to a remote display.

39. The vein enhancer according to claim 20 further comprising

a MEMS scanner configured to create a non-linear scan pattern using said light from said second laser, wherein said non-linear scan pattern is wider than the target area.

40. The vein enhancer according to claim 20 further comprising

a second photo detector configured to be responsive to said second wavelength;

wherein said computer and software are configured to obtain a non-invasive measurement of arterial oxygen saturation by measuring differential absorption between oxygenated hemoglobin and non-oxygenated hemoglobin based on responses detected by said first and second photo detectors, and said computer is configured to use said differential absorption measurements to calculate an oxygenation level and a pulse rate; and

wherein said first wavelength is an infrared wavelength, and said second wavelength is a red wavelength.

41. A vein enhancer for projecting enhanced vein images onto a target area of a patient to more easily perform a venipuncture, said vein enhancer comprising:

a first laser configured to selectively transmit light at a first wavelength onto the target area;

a means to detect said first wavelength of light being reflected from the target area as a contrasted image formed by different amounts of absorption and reflection by subcutaneous veins and surrounding tissue of the target area to detect veins therein, said means to detect further configured to output a signal representative of said contrasted image;

a computer configured to receive said signal and containing software configured to perform image processing of said contrasted image, said image processing comprising said software causing said computer to perform an analysis of the subcutaneous veins detected in said contrasted image to determine a depth of one or more of said detected veins and wherein said computer is configured to vary an output intensity of said first laser;

a second laser configured to selectively transmit light at a second wavelength within the visible spectrum, and to receive said signal from said detection means, to project said contrasted image onto the target area with said detected veins in said contrasted image overlying the subcutaneous veins therein; and

said second laser further configured to selectively project data resulting from said analysis onto the target area to cooperatively assist in performance of the venipuncture in conjunction with said projected contrasted image.

The vein enhancer according to claim 41, wherein said computer is configured to vary said output intensity of said first laser between two or more image frames, and said computer and software are further configured to determine said depth by comparing an image frame at a first intensity with one or more image frames at a successively higher intensity to determine a first appearance of each of said one or more veins.

43. The vein enhancer according to claim 42, wherein said computer is configured to identify said depth on said projection of said contrasted image by being configured to tag said first appearance of each of the one or more analyzed veins therein with a respective indicator symbol.

44. The vein enhancer according to claim 43 wherein said computer is configured to cause said second laser to project one or more additional indicator symbols and to superimpose said one or more additional indicator symbols over the one or more analyzed veins, to respectively identify the location for said absolute depth for each of the analyzed veins.

45. The vein enhancer according to claim 44, wherein said one or more additional indicator symbols comprises a line, and wherein said computer is configured to project a length for each said one or more line corresponding to said depth.

46. The vein enhancer according to claim 41, said computer further configured with a user interface comprising an input to permit a user-set maximum intensity for said varied output intensity of said first laser.

47. A vein enhancer for projecting enhanced vein images onto a target area of a patient to more easily perform a venipuncture, said vein enhancer comprising:

a first laser configured to selectively transmit light at a first wavelength onto the target area;

a photo detector configured to be responsive to said first wavelength of light, and to detect said first wavelength of light after being reflected from the target area as a contrasted image formed by different amounts of absorption and reflection by subcutaneous veins and surrounding tissue of the target area to detect veins therein, said photo detector further configured to output a signal representative of said contrasted image;

one or more discrete electronic components configured to receive said signal and software configured to perform image processing of the subcutaneous veins detected in said contrasted image, said image processing comprising said software and said one or more discrete electronic components configured to determine a depth of one or more of said detected veins and wherein said one or more discrete electronic components are configured to vary an output intensity of said first laser;

a second laser configured to selectively transmit light at a second wavelength within the visible spectrum, and to receive said signal from said photo detector to project said contrasted image onto the target area with said detected veins in said contrasted image overlying the subcutaneous veins therein; and

said second laser further configured to selectively project data resulting from said image processing onto the target area to cooperatively assist in the performance of the venipuncture in conjunction with said projected contrasted image.

The vein enhancer according to claim 47, wherein said one or more discrete electronic components is configured to vary said output intensity of said first laser between two or more image frames, and said software and said one or more discrete electronic components configured to determine said depth by comparing an image frame at a first intensity with one or more image frames at a successively higher intensity, to determine a first appearance of said one or more detected veins.

The vein enhancer according to claim 47, wherein said one or more discrete electronic components and said software are further configured to identify said depth on said projection of said contrasted image by being configured to tag said first appearance of each of said detected veins therein with a respective indicator symbol.

50. The vein enhancer according to claim 47, wherein said respective indicator symbol comprises a line, and wherein said computer is configured to project a length for said respective indicator line corresponding to said depth.
