Abstract

A waveguide 60 formed of material 62 allows propagation of image bearing light along a light pathway 64 by total internal reflection of the image bearing light. The layer of material 62 is a light transparent material arranged to allow an observer, not illustrated, to look through the layer of material 62 whilst also arranged to carry image bearing light. A grating element 66 carried within the layer of material 62 is arranged such that impinging image bearing light following the light pathway 64 is either diffracted out of the layer of material 62 as a pupil of image bearing light 68a to 68n or is reflected by either surface 70 or surface 72. The efficiency of the grating element 66 is varied along the length of the layer of material 62 to achieve the desired pupils of image bearing light 68a to 68n along the length of the layer of material 62. This results in a more even brightness of pupils of image bearing light 68a to 68n, as perceived by the observer looking through the layer of material 62.

Claims

1. A waveguide element, comprising:

a layer of light transmissive material arranged to allow propagation of image bearing light along a predefined propagation axis of the layer of material by total internal reflection of the image bearing light within the layer of material; and

a grating element carried on or within the layer of material that is arranged upon interaction with incident image bearing light to allow at least some incident image bearing light to exit the layer of material or to direct at least some of the incident image bearing light within the layer of material;

wherein the area of the grating element that the image bearing light is incident upon increases with distance along the propagation axis of the layer of material such that the interaction of the image bearing light with the grating element increases with distance along the propagation axis.

2. A waveguide, as claimed in claim 1, wherein the area of the grating element is such that the luminance of image bearing light that exits the layer of material is substantially uniform with distance along the propagation axis of the layer of material.

3. A waveguide, as claimed in claim 1, wherein a beam splitter is also carried on or within the layer of material and the beam splitter is arranged to split incident image bearing light and to direct such image bearing light within the layer of material.

4. A Head Up Display, or Helmet Mounted Display, or Head Mounted Display comprising a waveguide as claimed in claim 1.

5. A waveguide, as claimed in claim 1, wherein the structure of the grating element is substantially constant while the area of the grating element that the image bearing light is incident upon increases.

A waveguide, as claimed in claim 1, wherein the efficiency of the grating element is controlled by the amount of area of the grating element that the image bearing light interacts with such that intensity of the image bearing light exiting the layer of material remains substantially constant with the distance along the propagation axis.

7. A projection display comprising a first waveguide element and a second waveguide element, wherein at least one of said waveguide elements is as claimed in any of the preceding claims, the projection display being arranged for displaying an image to an observer, and comprising:

an image-providing light source device arranged to generate an image and to inject image bearing light into the first waveguide element to follow a propagation axis;

wherein the first waveguide element has a first grating element which is arranged to direct the image bearing light internally along the propagation axis and through which the image bearing light is, outputted from the first waveguide element;

the second waveguide element includes a coupling grating arranged to receive the image bearing light from the first waveguide element and to direct the image bearing light along the second waveguide element to follow a propagation axis;

the second waveguide element further includes an exit grating arranged to diffract received image bearing light out of the second waveguide element towards an observer;

wherein the first and/or the exit grating is arranged upon interaction with incident image bearing light to allow at least some incident image bearing light to exit its associated waveguide element or to direct at least some of the incident image bearing light within its associated waveguide element; and

wherein the area of the first and/or the exit grating that the image bearing light is incident upon increases with distance along as saidthe propagation axis of the layer of material such that the interaction of the image bearing light associated with the grating element increases with distance along the propagation axis.

8. A projection display, as, claimed in claim 7, wherein the first and/or exit grating is arranged such that the luminance of image bearing light that exits its associated waveguide is substantially uniform with distance along the propagation axis of its associated waveguide.

A projection display, as claimed in claim 7, wherein the first grating is arranged such that incident inputted image bearing light is diffracted therefrom with the incidence angle of the diffracted light at internal surfaces of the first waveguide element arranged to be greater that the critical angle for the material from which the first waveguide element is made.

A projection display, as claimed in claim 7, wherein the coupling grating is arranged such that incident image bearing light is diffracted therefrom with the incident angle of the diffracted light at internal surfaces of the second waveguide element arranged to be greater than the critical angle for the material from which the second waveguide element is made.

11. A projection display, as claimed in claim 7, wherein the diffractive power of the coupling grating is rotated through 90°

with respect to the diffractive power of the first grating.

A projection display, as claimed in claim 7, wherein the second waveguide element includes a narrow band selective reflection coating provided on a surface of the second waveguide element parallely spaced from the exit grating, which reflective coating is arranged to reflect light passing through the exit grating back towards the narrow band selective reflection coating to the exit grating.

13. A projection display, as claimed in claim 7, wherein the first waveguide element and/or the second waveguide element is curved.

14. A projection display, as claimed in claim 7, wherein the first waveguide element is plate-shaped, the second waveguide element is plate-shaped and the first and second waveguide elements are arranged substantially parallel to one another.

15. A projection display, as claimed in claim 7, wherein the first grating, coupling grating and exit grating are arranged substantially in the same plane.

16. A projection display, as claimed in claim 15, wherein the first waveguide and the second waveguide are formed within a single piece of material.

A projection display, as claimed in claim 7, wherein the first waveguide element is rod-shaped, the second waveguide element is plate-shaped and the first and second waveguide elements are arranged such the image bearing light exits the first waveguide element along a longitudinal axis of the first waveguide element and enters the second waveguide element to propagate along the propagation axis of the second waveguide element.

18. A Head Up Display, or Helmet Mounted Display, or Head Mounted Display comprising a projection display as claimed in any claim 7.
