1. A subscriber unit device comprising:
- a code division multiple access (CDMA) transceiver and a controller configured, on a condition that the subscriber unit is not granted resources for transmission on additional channels and a queue has data to transmit, to transmit information for use in a base station granting the resources;
the transceiver and controller further configured to transmit information to the base station indicating that the granted resources are not sufficient based on at least the amount of data to transmit in the queue and the granted resources;
the transceiver and controller is further configured to transmit the queued data over a plurality of CDMA code channels based on at least the granted resources; and
the controller further configured, if the subscriber unit device does not transmit data over the plurality of CDMA code channels, to maintain a communication connection between the subscriber unit device and a wireless CDMA network, wherein the code channels are sub-channels.

Abstract
A technique for transmission of wireless signals across CDMA radio links. Bandwidth is allocated dynamically within a session to specific CDMA subscriber unit based upon data rate determinations. Specifically, a dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm operates from limits calculated based upon available ports per subscriber, expected user bandwidth, and parallel user bandwidth versus throughput. Provisions for priority service, unbalanced forward and reverse spectrum utilization, voice prioritization, and band switching are also made.

3. A code division multiple access (CDMA) base station comprising:
-
a CDMA transceiver; and a controller operable with the CDMA transceiver to establish a packet data communication session over a plurality of layers including a physical layer, the controller being operable with the CDMA transceiver to facilitate use of a data traffic channel and a control channel during the packet data communication session, wherein the data traffic channel and control channel are associated with CDMA codes and the control channel carries information indicative of a data rate associated with the data traffic channel, the data traffic channel including a plurality of code channels, wherein the code channels are sub-channels, wherein the control channel is not configured to carry voice or data traffic, wherein a state of at least one of the layers other than the physical layer is maintained during the packet data communication session after the data traffic channel has been released, and wherein the controller controls transmission of packet data on a number of code channels, wherein the number of code channels is based on an amount of packet data in a packet data queue. - View Dependent Claims (4, 5)

6. A code division multiple access (CDMA) base station comprising:
-
a transmitter; a receiver; and a controller operable with the receiver to establish a communication session over a plurality of layers including a physical layer with a base station, wherein the transmitter transmits a control channel that carries control information, wherein the control information only includes information other than data or voice during the communication session, wherein the controller manages, by use of the control channel, a number of CDMA codes during the communication session, and wherein a state of at least one of the plurality of layers other than the physical layer is maintained during the communication session when no data, voice, or said control information is being transmitted by the transmitter, wherein the controller manages the number of CDMA codes during the communication session based on an amount of data in a queue.
